27 THE TIMES Sunday, June 3, 1979 Color Indiana Shuns Gas Probe BEATING A MYSTERY 111 iO W' 'ftfc the number of complaints is rising. Gasoline prices have gone up 20 cents a gallon in Indiana in the last year and between seven and nine cents a gallon in the last six weeks, according to Hugh Orr, manager of the Hoosier Motor Club. Orr said some gas station operators may be charging too much, "but on the other end of the spectrum I think you're going to find more people who are afraid of charging too much because of the federal fines. To be on the safe side, they're charging a penny or two less than they think they can." Federal regulations set a ceiling on retail gasoline prices based on a station's gas price on May 15, 1973. It's a federal mandate. It's up to them to enforce it." A DOE spokeswoman said the department has only 50 auditors inspecting stations nationwide, with most of them concentrated in metropolitan areas. Between Feb. 15 and May 18, federal auditors inspected 2,256 stations and found pricing violations at 945 of them. However, no inspections were conducted in Indiana, despite 129 complaints of price gouging.

Fifty-six of the complaints were registered on DOE's toll-free hotline during a two-week period in mid-May, indicating NATIONAL Bff GET READY FOR SUMMER STOCK IIP NOW! Comes To'50' ST. Judge James Kimbrough ruled Friday that Alfred Davis, 50, of 4117 Dearborn was inadequately re-presented by his attorney during his May, 1977, trial.

Kimbrough set the new trial for July 30. Davis was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder in the April 5, 1977, shooting death of John L. Simington in East Chicago. Davis had argued that his trial lawyer, Jay Given of East Chicago, suffered a serious illness prior to the trial and was unable to effectively represent him. The motion contended that Given's collapse during the trial led the jury to assume Given faked a heart attack to gain sympathy for Davis.

Earlier this week, the Fort Wavne Journal-Gazette, in a copywrighl story, quoted unidentified sources as saying police wanted to question Leslie in as many as nine other homicides, mostly involving hitchhikers in Florida and Georgia. Six days before his death, Leslie had told his sister in a telephone call that he was contemplating suicide, police said. Meeks said when Leslie called his sister, whose name has been withheld by police, he instructed her to open a sealed letter she was holding for him. The letter implicated Leslie in the slaying of Miss Biddle, but police at first could not confirm it was in Leslie's handwriting. In another development, a woman identifying herself as Leslie's sister, but refusing to give her name, called Fort Wayne radio station WMEE after Leslie's body was found and claimed she had almost talked him into surrendering until published reports of the police search for him appeared.

Ind. (AP) -Authorities say handwriting analyses show a suspected murderer who killed himself wrote a letter implicating him in the slaying of a teen-age Fort Wayne girl. Allen County Sheriff Charles Meeks said Friday an examination of the letter links the suspect, Robert L. Leslie to the death of Trena Biddle, 16, whose half-clothed body was found along a rural Allen County road in early 1978. The letter, given to police by Leslie's sister, touched off a multi-state manhunt for the 36-year-old Fort Wayne man.

Leslie was found early Thursday in a Detroit hotel room with a gunshot wound to his temple. Police heard a gunshot seconds before they broke into the room. Medical officials in Detroit later ruled Leslie's death a suicide. Leslie was wanted on a murder warrant in Georgia, a kidnapping warrant in Florida and for questioning in the death of Miss Biddle. booo OGO( VC0C OOP Super Chromix black matrix picture tube for rich, vivid color.
