Critics say the Dandelion players would meet their match in a boys' junior varsity team from a high school, but Barbara Patton says pound for pound women can be as mean as men. "Oh, God," she trilled.

"Women play football? TTiat's crazy." In all her years of playing the basketball and tennis Barbara Patton, who's 32, says she never once pictured herself kicking, tackling or scoring a touchdown. An instant later the impact hit her. "Why not!" she she beaded for Los Angeles Dandelions women's football team tryouts-all 135 pounds of her. She gets $25 to play in each game. It barely covers commuting expenses from her home in suburban Inglewood to practice sessions at Fairfax High School here.

To support herself and her two children, she works as a PBX operator. "I'll be too old to play by the time this pays off," she says. But she adds she wouldn't consider quitting because she likes the excitement of combat, the chance to be aggressive and the cohesive team spirit. And what do men think of her enthusiasm for a traditionally male sport? "Guys keep looking at you like you're a freak," laughs Barbara, who's separated from her husband. "Sometimes they can't believe it and ask me to tackle them.

Usually I don't tell them I play football." But occasionally a male friend shows up to watch her practice and her son, Marvcus, 7, often waits by the sidelines. Debbie, 11, could care less about football, says Barbara. She chuckles about her own mother's reaction. However, a Giants' spokesman said that the injury did not necessarily rule out Johnson's participation in Sunday's game against the New York Jets at New Haven, Conn. Johnson, the Giants' leading ground gainer last season with 902 yards in 12 games, had been hampered by a sprained ankle and a pulled hamstring muscle earlier this season and did not make his first start until last Sunday against the Chiefs at Kansas City. He scored two touchdowns, leading the Giants to an upset 33-27 victory.

The spokesman said that Johnson suffered the broken bone during a scrimmage Friday. The injury was X-rayed Saturday and a cast was placed on the hand. The spokesman added that Coach Bill Anrspar-ger would not decide until Sunday how much use he would make of Johnson against the Jets. 8 Grand Slams Pitchers on the Philadelphia Phillies gave up eight grand slam home runs in 1974.
