Rapchak attended Clark High School, and served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946. Having acquired a love of the great romantic music of the war years, he spent the next five years learning the trade through a series of announcing jobs at WJOB, WWCA, and WIMS, sometimes alternating between radio gigs and day laborer jobs at Lever Bros, and Union Carbide. But it was his idol Dave Garroway who encouraged Mr. Rapchak to pursue his dreams, which finally landed him a show at Chicago's WAAF in 1951.

Thus began Mr. Rapchak's glory years, in which he established himself as a friend and colleague of some of the biggest names in musical entertainment. Over the years, he interviewed and maintained friendships with the likes of Nat "King" Cole, Johnny Mercer, Les Brown, Stan Kenton, Tony Bennett, Oscar Peterson and Jo Stafford. In August of 1958, he began his all-night show on WCFL, during which time he created a major documentary on the music of Glenn Miller, and appeared on Bob Newhart's TV show to present an award to bandleader Paul Weston. In 1965 he left WCFL, which had switched to a rock format, tearing up the Top 40 survey and walking out while on the air! Various jobs at smaller stations in Chicago followed, along with announcing duties at WLS-TV.

In 1978, he was offered an evening show at WCFL, returning to the very same microphone where he had walked out 13 years "As I was were the first words he spoke to his audience that night. In 1980, he was invited to host a new program "When Music Was Music" on Saturday and Sunday nights at WGN, where his impressive list of guests included Doris Day, Howard Keel, Carroll O'Connor, Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney and the last-ever interview with Rudy Vallee. In 1995 Mr. Rapchak's extremely popular show was abruptly cancelled due to a scheduling change. Mike Rapchak can best be described as a romantic loner, a late-night balladeer who, through his music, never left the magical world of moonlit nights, dancing under the stars, and lonely train whistles echoing from afar.

He will be missed. He is survived by his five children: Mike, Jr, Larry (Celeste), Nancy, Philip and Laura and their mother, May Rapchak; two grandsons: Mike III (Michelle) and Robert (Kristen); three great grandchildren: Madison, Roger and Mike IV; a sister, Ruth Rapchak of Whiting; brother, Bill Rapchak of Naperville; 13 nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife Helen Statz Rapchak; parents: George and Mary (Galocy) Hrapcak; three brothers: George, John "Jack" and Robert. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 1, 2006, 9:30 a.m. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St, Whiting.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. John E. Kalicky, C.PP.S.

officiating. Interment, St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Visitation at the funeral home, Friday, and p.m. Members of the parish will offer prayers at the funeral home Friday at 4:00 p.m.
