Obituaries C2 Quad-City Times Monday, January 7, 2002 LeCIaire James Holland, 77 Philip Hoover, 73 Virginia Quinn DAVENPORT Virginia L. Quinn, 82, a resident of Davenport, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, after an automobile accident in Davenport Funeral services will be 10 versity Fellows Program for Senior Executives. Additionally, he served as deputy mayor of the City of Gary from 1976 through 1988. From 1989 through 1999, he served as president of Gary Intercity Lines and general manager of the Gary Public Transportation Corporation.

Under his management, Gary Public Transportation Corp. won numerous safety awards and other awards from the Indiana Transit Association and the American Public Transportation Association. Additionally, Mr. Holland served on numerous transportation committees. He was chairman of the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission, as well as a past member of the Executive Board of the Northwest Indiana General Assembly Study Commission on State Transportation.

Other awards and achievements Mr. Holland received included: being selected as on of the first members of the Rock Island High School Athletics Hall of Fame; being inducted in 1997 into the Gary, "Steel City Hall of being inducted in September 1998 into the Rock Island High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, and being recognized in 2000 by the Quad-City Times as one of the top 10 Quad-City athletes in the past 100 years in the Quad-Cities. To quote his late, outstanding high school football coach, H.V. (Shorty) Almquist, "James Holland set the standards for all future Rock Island High School studentathletes." Mr. Holland was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish his memories are daughters, Dena Holland-Neal, Gary, Sharon Lecompte, Elgin, 111., Nana Holland, New York City, and Jennifer Holland, Chicago; three grandchildren, Nia Neal, Gary, Mia Neal, Gary, and Sohani Holland, Miami; one great-grandson, Dewayne Jackson, who was very special to him; two sisters, Etta M. Strickland, East Moline, 111., and Opal Shep-hard, Rock Island, a very special friend and companion, Flossie Davis; and a host of nieces and nephews. Jim's humor and love for his family and friends will be missed by all. Violet Buchheit LeCLAIRE, Iowa Violet Bernice Buchheit, 96, a resident of Bettendorf Healthcare Center and formerly of LeCIaire, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at First Presbyterian Church, LeCIaire, where she was a member. Burial will be in Glendale Mrs. Buchheit Cemetery, LeCIaire.

Visitation is one hour before the services at the church. McGinnis, Chambers Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is in charge of arrangements. She was born Dec. 11, 1905, in Mount Sterling, 111. She was united in marriage to Francis David "Tony" Buchheit in Galesburg, 111.

on June 6, 1931. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1964. Violet was a homemaker and devoted mother and "Nana" to her entire family. In addition to the church, she was a member of the Silver Creek Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of LeCIaire" and the LeCIaire Women's Club.

Memorials may be made to the church. Those left to honor her memory include her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Loretta Buchheit, LeCIaire; her grandchildren, Francis M. Buchheit and his wife, Kristen Mangels, Ames, Iowa, Elizabeth Acker-man and her husband, Joe, LeCIaire, and Lisa Silverthorn and her husband, Steve, Bettendorf; her great-grandchildren, Kara Silverthorn, Joe Acker-man, Josh Ackerman and Alex Buchheit; and her brother, Francis Smith, Washington, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Cathlene Buchheit in 1983. Davenport Helen Swenty DAVENPORT Memorial Services for Helen G.

Swenty, 91, of Davenport, will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary Chapel, Davenport. There will be no visitation. Mrs. Swenty died Friday, Jan.

4, 2002, at her home in Davenport. Helen Geral-dine Wareham was born May 19, 1910, to Lee and Grace (Jugenheimer) Wareham in Jul i Mrs. Swenty Davenport She married Henry A. Danico in 1931. He preceded her in death in 1939.

She later married Henry Swenty on Sept. 25, 1948, in Davenport. He preceded her in death 1975. Mrs. Swenty attended the University of Iowa.

She was a former member of the YMCA Board, a 10 year member and past president of the Scott County Mental Health Board, past president of the Madison Elementary and JB Young Junior High School PTA's, Davenport Council of PTA, Chami-nade Music Lovers Club, Quad-City Chi Omega Alumni and the board of the Clarissa C. Cook Home. She also was a 25-year member of the Putnam Museum and Putnam Museum Guild, a past member or the mayor's committee of adult crossing guards, a 50-plus year member of the First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, where she also had served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years and was a past Queen of the Pyramid Temple No. 10 Daughters of the Nile. She was awarded the Grand Cross of Colors, Order of Rainbow, Iowa Merit Mother in 1961 and Panhellenic Women of the year in 1981.

She served as the style show narrator for various organizations and served as a reader and book reviewer for innumerable programs for various organizations. In lieu of flowers, memorials may go to the Scott County VNA Hospice Association, the Clarissa Cook Home or the Daughters of the Nile Stepping-stone Foundation. Survivors include her daughter, Diana "Dee-Dee" Mueller, Davenport; a son, Robert Danico, Davenport; a stepson, William Swenty, Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to both husbands, she was preceded in death hv her parents and a brother, mayor, he was instrumental in resolving the Scott County Landfill issue. In addition, he helped spearhead the construction of the new water treatment plant in Buffalo and the new fire station.

One of his most ongoing and urgent issues was making people aware of the importance of life jacket and safety awareness along the river. He was a avid sports fan, loved the eagles along the river and was a true American patriot, always displaying the American flag at his home. Some of the most special "people" in his life were his pet dogs, Clark and Lulu; and his pet cats, Buffy and her twin sons, Biggie Rat and Itchy Brother. Memorials may be made to the Center for Alcohol Drug Abuse, Davenport Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Joan; his daughters and son-in-law, Nancy Jenkins, San Antonio, Sandy and Ronald Melton, Sheffield Lake, Ohio, and Sally Lachowski, Louisville, Ky; his stepson, David Bretag and his girlfriend, Erin, Davenport; his grandchildren, Scott Jenkins and his wife, Roxanne, Kristine Munguia and her husband, Andrew, Jennifer Arbabrite and her husband, B. Samantha Melton and her boyfriend, Doug, Matthew Melton, Andrew Melton, Danny Lachowski and David Lachowski; and his great-grandchildren, Zachary Michael Jenkins and Amelia Ashlynn Jenkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Richard Philip; and by his greatgrandchildren, Andrew Angel Munguia and Ashlynn Michelle Munguia. Willie Mae Nipper EAST MOLINE Willie Mae Nipper, 85, of East Moline, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Services will Tuesday at Esterdahl Mortuary Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Visitation is one hour before Mrs. Nipper the service Tuesday at the funeral home. She was employed by the laundry service at the former Lutheran Hospital, Moline, and then by F.W. Means, retiring in 1978. Willie Mae Ezell was born Jan.

14, 1916, in Climax, Ga. She married George Nipper in 1945 in Panama City, Fla. He died in 1970. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Survivors include sons, Ray and Charles, both of Milan, six grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; and a special friend, Barb Daebelliehn, Moline.

Milan Mary Frick Nelson MILAN, 111. Services for Mary Frick Nelson, 72, of Milan, will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-7 p.m.

Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Nelson died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. She was a Mrs.

Nelson dispatcher for the Milan Police retiring in 1988. She previously had worked at the Rock Island Arsenal, Regalia and Augustana Book Concern. Mary Frick was born Sept. 23, 1929, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She married Cecil Nelson in 1953 in Moline.

He preceded her in death. Memorials may be made to the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association. BUFFALO, Iowa Philip C. Hoover, 73, a resident and former mayor of Buffalo, Iowa died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 8, 2002, at McGinnis, Chambers Sass Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf.

Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Mr. Hoover Visitation will be fron; 3-8 p.m. today at the funeral homa He was born Jan. 10, 1928, in Iowa City, and as a baby, was adopted by Carl C.

and Nancy Charlotte (Baer) Hoover. He married Joan A. Bretag in Davenport on Dec. 15, 1984. Philip had been employed in various capacities by the Center for Alcohol Drug Services, Davenport, since 1983.

During World War II, when he was only 17 years old, he enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. At the onset of the Korean War, he re-enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1954. His memberships included the American Legion of Blue Grass, Iowa Trails Committee of River-Action, the Quad-Cities River Council, the Emergency Management Team and was a friend of "Bill Bob." Philip served two terms (non-consecutive) as mayor of Buffalo, the last term ending this past Dec. 31. He was a community-minded person and worked very hard for the benefit of his fellow citizens.

Shortly after his first election as East Moline Helen Burkhiser EAST MOLINE Services for Helen Burkhiser, 82, of East Moline, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Moline. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline.

Mrs. Burkhiser died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Mrs. Burkhiser Island, after a long battle with diabetes and congestive heart failure. Helen Mary Jane Stoner was born April 22, 1919, near Cincinnati, Iowa.

She married Everett Burkhiser in 1938 in Centerville, Iowa. She had taught in a one-room school she had attended. She continued teaching after her marriage in various one-room schools in Davenport and spent one year in Bettendorf. She also continued teaching when her family moved back to southern Iowa in 1947. She taught at Logan Elementary School, Moline, until retiring and began her second career teaching Pioneer classes based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books.

She continued sharing her love of history with children through these classes until 1999. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include her husband, Everett; daughters, Phyllis Ellett, Sherrard, 111., and Cynthia Mattison, Moline; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Ricki Whipple EAST MOLINE Services for Ricki J. Whipple, 48, of East Moline, will be 11 a.m.

Tuesday at Esterdahl Mortuary Moline. Burial will be in Bowles-burg Cemetery, Silvis, 111. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr.

Whipple died Thursday Jan. 3, 2002, in Barnett, Mo. He was an equipment onerator at John Deere. Mr. Whipple He was born Mdrch 21, 1953, in Fort Riley, Kan.

He married Trade Wilder in 1976. Memorials may be made to your local humane society. Survivors include a son, Ricki Lee Whipple, Edgewater, his mother, Marilyn Underwood, Barnett, an aunt, Carol McDonald, Geneseo, and many other aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Whipple, who died June 16, 1953, in the Korean War. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Chuck, and a sister, Zelmjy GARY Ind.

Services for James W. Holland, age 77, of 633 McKinley Gary, 46404, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Western Community Church, 2826 W. 15th Gary.

Friends may call today from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., with the fam ily hour from 6-8 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery Guy and Allen Funeral Directors, Gary, is in charge of Mr. Holland arrangements.

Mr. Holland, athlete, educator and civic leader, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Gary, Ind. He was born in East Caron-delet, DL, on Oct. 16, 1924, to John and Matilda Holland.

He was raised and educated in Rock Island, and graduated as president of his senior class in 1943, receiving academic as well as sports honors. He was a high school all-state football player and two-time high school all-American in track and field. Upon graduation from high school, he entered the Army where he was affiliated with the Tuskegee Airmen. Once honorably discharged from the Army, he attended and graduated in 1950 from Northwestern University with a bachelor of science degree in education. While attending Northwestern University, he served as captain of the track and field team.

He was a member of the first Pan American Games held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He continued his education at Valparaiso University, completing a master's degree in liberal studies. From 1951 through 1968, he taught 12th-grade government and economics at Roosevelt High School Gary Ind. In 1968, Mr. Holland became the executive for" the City of Gary Model Cities Program.

Subsequently, as principal associate of Jacobs he authored administrative manuals that became the national standard for the Model Cities Program. Mr. Holland devised and established basic Model Cities structures for 15 cities which led to lengthy on-site consultancies in major U.S. cities. In 1980, he was one of 20 Fellows selected annually from hundreds of nominees to attend the Harvard Uni PENDING BETTENDORF Terrance McFate, 55, of Bettendorf, died Sunday at his home after an extended illness.

5, 2002, at Bettendorf Health Care Center. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. Faye Harris was born April 2, 1910, in Moline. She married Jacob Friedman in 1954 in Springfield, III He died in 1963. She married Herman Farber in 1967 in Rock Island.

He died in 1977. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two stepsons, Hank Farber, Bettendorf, and Ron Farboc Iowa City; and a nephew, Marv Harris, Las Vegas. a.m. Wednesday, Jan.

Virginia Campbell was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a daughter of Glen M. and Effie Agnes (Holloway) Campbell. She married Howard T. Quinn in Clinton, Iowa, on July 18, 1940.

He preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1985. Her memberships included the Scott Zedoka Rebekah Lodge 2, where she served in all offices including that of Grand Noble, the Order of the Eastern Star, Davenport; the Order of the Amaranth and the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Virginia was a faithful and dedicated volunteer in many area organizations and community activities. She freely donated her time to the Good Samaritan Nursing Center, to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the American Red Cross, the Angel Tree Program at North-park Shopping Center, Davenport; and the Special Olympics.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Daven Mrs. Milota port.

Visitation is 3-6 p.m. today at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Margaret Ruth Axon was born Aug. 6, 1906, in Goldfield, Iowa, a daughter of Peter and Rosa (Stef-fen) Axon. On June 14, 1928, Margaret was united in marriage to Lumir E.

"Lew" Milota in Gold-field, Iowa. He preceded her in death April 18, 1995. Margaret taught in Davenport schools for more than 15 years. She began teaching at J.B. Young, and, three years later, moved to Davenport High School (presently Central High School) where she taught until her retirement in 1961.

She was a 70-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, Davenport; and was a 40-year member and past president of Genesis East Medical Center Auxiliary (formerly St. Luke's Auxiliary). She also was the founder and co-chairperson of the "Petals Leaves Flower Shop" at Genesis East Medical Center. Margaret enjoyed travel, playing Bridge, working in her yard and garden, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Department or to Genesis East Medical Center Auxiliary.
