THE-CIXY OF DANVILLE. Its Attraetlans, Social, E-mefttloaal ad Its nomas mmd Pablie YHS 9E Ar AIO DCB AST-Cat. Oormeeodanos of ffi CoarlerJoarMl.1 Daktiixb, Not. 7. Tha ancient city of Danville, la Bovla eoanty, is one of the most attractive plscoa Central Kentucky.

Its society- is biral rsOnad and cultured; it can boast of larjre a amber of beanttfol and refined ladies and learned men. Society Is clearly defined, and it is almost impoealble la' this city for a man to ran la the wrong groove or to find himself mlaplaeidlH The people are well educated, and look With pride npon old Center College and her other taitUn-tioos of The nevr collet; buildiiyr, near tbe old collets, is a handsome strnctare and an ornament to the city. There are numerous ehnrches here, and the entire population tarns oat to the rrlees held in them. The city is Presbyterian, sad toe people are decidedly polemical. Tounir men and joana; ladies, old men and middle-aired, all talk polemics, and re ready "to bounce" each other on the sllfhtest difference of opinion as regards doctrines or church governments, and each one Is as foil of erg-amenta as Caddy Heading's mother was fu.l of doctrines, lint all of tins Is well conducted; it is part of their education, and never becomes offensive.

Even the preachers in the pulpit esebew the oratorical style for tbe didactics of the lecture-room. Hence some Tery proey sermons. The city is fall of old, palatial homes, where comfort and elegance are combined with taste. An air of callers forests these homes and renders them immensely attractive. There Is npsrtartlah er peirvenu fa tbe appearance of these homes, and one (eels instinctively that in each of them, taken at random, he would find eleg anoe, culture, comfort and hospitality.

The Clements Hmin, kept by Mr. Tbomae, an old friend sad admirer of the CoraiEB-Jocbml, is a leading; hotel. Here can be foaod much of the peculiar characteristics of this floe, old cut. wbere everything Is made to be subservient to order, decency and com-f i rt. Mr.

on f(ciai iDVitatlOD, tbe faiuoua Deaf an-i Dumb Asylum, hup thould be tbe pride of tbe State and an object of interest and concern to eery man. woman and child wbo value tbe good it hM done and-will continue to do. Unlike most institutions, of tbe kind, it has never be. a beggar, a coron.c beggar, nor a howling menaicaut for the old Sag aad fat appropriations. When wsa first charten Or tbe Mate, in 1N-2, ea appropriation of 43,000 was giveu, which was Judiciously used.

Ibe present bead some but Bmall building was built in ISoti. The rapid increase of pupils under the enlightened management of the present corps of Trustee, otticers and teacher, cails loudly for more room and more accommodations. At the last session of tne legislature, tbe management, after mature deliberation and consultation, asked for an appropriation of s.50,000 for the purpose of erecting a chapel, dormitory and dmlng-ball, wblch was lost in tne House, but passed in the Senate. The bill was lost, and appropriation cut down to $30,000. wbich is too small by 25,000 to complete the work begun.

The cuapel, dormitories and dining hall are all now ready for the roof, and are handsome bat plain buildings. It la absolutely necessary to get more in order to complete tbe wort, the Slate of keniacky is noted for tbe macnanimity with which she takes care ofhor uaiortunates and imbeciles, and tbe k4 -better able than ever to give this mite of at, appropriation to tbe asylum, since Fayette Hewitt has been so lucky as to have collected over Dack taxes. Ibis effectually puts a slop to the "shibboleth" of the stingy members of that tbe Mate. was in debt, while There was plenty of money in the sinking fund. The State allows to tbe asylam $140 Der capita for pupils and to.

000 for Superintendent and teachers, and per year for tbe clothing of thcpupiJa. Ad when a scholar enters tbe Atyitna whose parents are able to pay be is received at a charge of $140 for board and tuition for ooe year, and wbea paid into the hands ot the Treasurer it Is refunded to the Mate. Yea. this pitiful sum is psid to the btato, the croud old btate which boasts ot Dot being in dtbt, and bo acta of being the moet magnanimous and blue-biooded of ail the sisterhood of States. It is a well established fact in the history of mute that they are a.

mod Invariably the o-prg of poor parents. and not able to pay a dollar for their training. Ibe actual amount of money paid Into tbe institution out of 139 pupils (Iom not amount to yearly, which goes Into the State Treasury. In 1878 this asylum hao eighty six pupils, and at the present time it has 139. This in create resulted in over-crovdmg in the dormitories and in tbe dining-room.

I learn that two boys are required to sleep in one single bed, which is a great blunder in hygiene, bach a state of things is unfortunate, and will resuit in serious consequences, if not remedied. Tbe number of pupils is likely to Increase from year to year, and when the effect of the present benign management Is better known and understood. There are over 250 mutes in the State ho ought by ail means to be recipients of the State's bounty, while there are actually only 132 now attending tbe Asylum. The sight of those poor mates would appeal loudly to the Legislature for an additional appropriation of to complete the chapel, dining-room and dormitories, and, above all, to furnish a heating apparatus for the health and comfort of the pupils. Tbe Board of Commissioners wlil take the matter la hand, it is said, and will make another call on tbe Lecislatare.

Tbee commissioners have the good of the institution at heart, ana will spare neither time nor trouble to accomplish the desired end. The condition of the State prison Frank-tort was a distrrace to tbe State just a few years ago, and people of other States bowled about crowded and unhealthy rooms and dilapidated buildings. If they would clamor and howl about a prison-pen, how much more should we require pleasant and spacious quarters for the poor, helpless and lcnoc nt youths of both sexes that are the peculiar pensioners of the State's bounty sad charity. fiol. Dudley 15 a highly gifted gentleman aud eminently well qualified for his position, ile Is ably sustained by a corps of competent teachers.

The children are well cared for and thoroughly taught. Their bright, trustful faces look appealingly at yeu and seem to ask lovingly for pit and love. The Solons ot oar Legt lature should visit the institution and see for themselves, and understand that the State of Kentucky Is tbe mother ot all these helpless mutes, and that tbev have as much right to ber pity and do.e as any others jf her children. If the next Legislature should hesitate about the appropriation. It woe id be well for some humanitarian to play tbe lobbyi-t and work upon the sentimentality of the ooe.

l'jtx llASDLB. MUX GREVY'S TROUSSEAU. IPhLsdelDbia Telegraph Paris Letter. I hear that Mile. Grevy (now Madame Wilson) aet a good example to brides tn general, and to the feminine world at large, in the natter of preparations far her trousseau.

Kone of the articles were exhibited, but I am told that all tbe under-garments were of -the simplest possible description, being only "remarkible for fineness ot material, delicate atitchusg and dainty finish of cut and sewing. A oarrow bordering of embroidery, or a flat-edging of real but narrow Valenciennes lace, formed all tne ornamentation bestowed upon tbe moat elaborate of the articles. There were no bows ot ribbon, or cascades of iieehlin or Valenciennes. All was slmpls, r3ned and perfectly tasUfoL ttmi la the matter of dresses command ms to the trousseau of tbe voungest daughter of tbe Marquise de Guadara, tbe future Princess Delgrado. which I was admitted ss a special privileee to behold at Worm's the other day, whea the dresses were srranged in tbe showroom to be inspected by the family.

They numbered twenty-two in all "Cre-sen to ride to. and stand In. ard walk In, Dresses to dance us, and eat In, and talk in. Presses for dinner, or sappr, or ball. Dresses in which to do co'hlce at all of course each one inspected being lovelier than the last.

Tbe wedding dress itself was comparatively simple. It was composed of a corsage and train of wtflte satin, with skirt front of white watered silk laid in two large folds at either side, and finished with a heavy fringe; Tbe corsage was bordered around tbe edge with a deep double bias fold of satin, and was trimmed, as were also the sides of train, with folds of tulle held In place with bouquets of orange flowers. Next came a ball-dress of white tulle sprigged with silver, vaporous, delicate and poetic-looking, made with a rountLeorsage drawn Into folds, the skirt and waist being trimmed with long trains of honeysuckle. It was a dress fit for Queen Tl-taula herself. A brilliant toilet, near to this aerial creation, was composed of a corsage and train of sapphire blue velvet, the former cut-away over the skirt-front tn a Louis XIV.

square, and tbe latter drawn back and falling in long voluminous folds, being edged with a plaiting of old-gold satin set underneath tbe hem. Tbe underskirt was of rich whie satin, embroidered with gold stars, and trimmed at tbe sides with curved ruffles ot cream Isce, amongst which ware set lsrge roettes formed of inch-wide gold braid. A bouquet of. pink rose and white jessamine was placed at tbe left side of tbe corsage which was cat open en ccrur and balf-long sleeves, trimmed with bite lace and with a torsade of tbe gold -embroidered satin. A pale blue velvet ball dress was made in the gen-nine Loo is MIL style, with deep tabs at each side of tbe waist, and a wide sash of white satin: it wss cut low in the neck, and esch one of the bort sleeves was formed of a single hfjjb pulf, inside of which were placed halt long sleeves of white lace.

Down tbe front of the skirt and around the hem was placed wide and beautiful passementerie of dive nnd pearls, tbe corsage and aleeves Deiog cled with silver taada. A bouquet ot tea-roees and heliotrope adorned the corsage A ruperb dinner dress had tbe corsago and train of pale apple green satin, the latter lined with white satin and turned back wita full white satin revers, over a skirt front of white satin figured in a large patters oi roses in their natural hues in ahsdea velvet. Tbe corsage was high, and was cut open en coeur. The half-long sleeres bad the upper part formed of rattles oi isce put on horizontally, the under part being oi palereen aeiin. Tbe flowers to be worn with this dress were rieli pink geraniums.

A very lovely evening dree" was composed oi ale bine trrcen wateredk, and satin of the same hue. The low neck corsage snd long train were of tbe watered silk, tbe iaUer parting gracefully In front, just below tbe waist, so as to show two straigbt panel of satin, bordered with a narrow band of embroidery in silver and edged up the sides and across tbe hem with a fringe composed of p'nk rosobuds and foliage. Here and there on this skirt front and on the train wa let a large half-blown oink roee. Tbe front of tbe corsage wss crossed from shoulder to shoulder wiih a massed garland ot roses, roaebuda and foiiage. ei here and tbeie with tbe priliiant emerald green niug cases of tropical beetles.

Then there was a walkiug-cosiume of garnet velvet; with culls aud tcbu ot old Venetian lace, and a black siik dress trimmed with a scarlet, satin-grounded brocade, and other elegant toilets literally too numerous to mention, lor 1 have already described the richest and the most sinking ot them all. A STRANGE COINCIDENCE. I Washington PosUl Of the many coincidences growing out of the President's assassination tnere have been none more singular than that re. a ted by Mr. D.

K. McKee, a well-known journalist of this city. During the last session ot Congress be had entile charge of the work at the Capitol for tbe Ntw York Associated Press. The duties were very exacting, and the position one of grave responsibility. When Congress adjourned he waav.

gsuerously anren four months' vscstion with pay, hicb be decided to spend in Europe. He sailed the latter part of June, scarcely a week belore tbe President's assaa-siuatiou. To a fnend with whom he eon-versed the night prior to sailing he remarked that he was aick. nervous and jaded, and that during his absence he did not wish to set eye on a newspaper. "Why." said bis friend, "you'll be the first man to call for one on your arrival at Queens-town." "No.

indeed," was the reply, "not unless it contains something startling, like the assassination of tbe Prssldeni or some other remote possibility." As tbe slowly steamed up the harbor at Queeostowu they were met by a tug which ran along Mde for tbu malls. The capiaia carried iu hia hand a large package of Irish newspapers, which once thrown on deck were soon distributed among the passengers. McK.ee at the time was lounging In tbe smoking-room aft. Suddenly Lis wife's rneid appeared in tbe doorway and said tbat Mrs. wished to see him immediately.

"Anything lmportaut?" he languidly inquired, at the same time lightuig a fresh cigar. "Mrs. McKee bids me tell you tbat President Garfleid has been assassinated." McKee lsagbed. lie remembered then that bis wife was standing near when ha made tbe remark qnoted above. "Tell your mistress," be replied, jokiDgly, "she'll hsve to Invents better story tbn that before I break my promise not to lock iu a newspaper during my absence." A few moments later he strolled dowu toward the bow of tbe boat.

The passengers were gathered together in little knots low tones. Every face wore a saddened expression. lie puzzled hi brain for a moment for come solution of tbe mystery. Suddenly a horrible thought passed' through his brain: "Suppose tbat girl were not joking and that she really spoke the truth." He eagerly snatched a paper from the anus of the nearest passenger, aud the first sight tbat greeted his eyea waa the great Daring headlines announcing la dalalit the terrible tragedy of July is. A CIGAR MACHINE.

New Orleans Democrat. 1 Simon O. Flotow, leit last evening by the Mobile train for NVashington and New York in tbe interest of the cigar machine Jointly patented by himsolf and Mr. John E. Schmalx.

An exhibition of the Invention was given yesterday morning in the presence of a number of gentlemen, and tbe universal verdict was thai it was a success in every respect. The invention consists of two machines. Tbe first a wrapper cutter, which not only turns out the Wrappers expeditiously and economically, so far as tbe consumption of the leaf goes, but also counts them. The other machine, which roils the cigars. Is worked by a treadle, and can make 2,000 cigars a Cay.

The rights of the patent have been purchased by a company composed of New York and Washington capitalists, Uie, price paid being S200.000. one bait cash and the balance tn stock. Tbe company will manufacture the machines for sale. THE RIVER AND WEATHER. SIGNAL SERVICE REPORTS.
