36 SUN NOV 15, 196 Ldke Charles American Press Southwest Louisiana Football Championships Will Go Down To Wire With Crucial Games This Friday The 1964 Southwest Louisiana prep football season goes down to the wire this week with most of the championship marbles still up for grabs. Of the 11 districts in the AMERICAN PRESS coverage area only four can be safely summarized. In the other eight, the final week of action will decide which teams move on into DISTRICT 2-AAA the drawn-out procedure of naming state champions. In District 3-AA, Menard 5s the ch a I with a 5-0-0 league record and Leesville took second place by the slim margin of three first downs. Leesville and Natchitoches wound up with identical 3-1-1 records but the two teams tied Friday night and Leesville was clarcd the winner on first downs.

This year, Class AA joins Classes AAA and A in sending both first and second-place finishers into the state playoffs. A showdown is set Friday night in District 4-A when De- Quincy (3-0-0) plays a dry (3-0-0) at Lake Charles. Both teams are assured of playoff berths but the order in which they play will be decided Friday night. In District 5-B, Kinder has won the title with a perfect 6-0-0 record. HATTIESBURG, Miss. (Spl.) Southern Mississippi handed Louisiana Tech, the nation's second ranked small college football team, Us first loss of the season 14-7 Saturday night. All of the scoring came in the first half after an explosive opening that saw Southern fullback Dooney Lippincott burst through the middle and run 78 yards for a touchdown on the first offensive play.

After being stopped once at the Southern one-yard line, Tech came back to tie the score late in the first period. A pass interception on the Southern 41 by Jim Stringer put Tech in business. Quarterback Billy Laird passed six yards to end Maurice Greer for the tally. A 28-yard punt return by halfback Billy Devrow put Southern at the 50-yard line early in the second period, and quarterback Vic Purvis took to the air. He hit end Bill Gorney with an 11-yard toss for the score.

The 59-yard run by freshman fullback Richie Golman on the first play of the second half put Tech on the Southern 22. Then Tech drove on to a first down at the one, but Golman fumbled and Southern took over and killed Tech's last serious threat. Southern is now 5-3 while Tech is 8-1. He capped two other Boston scoring drives with two and one yard plunges, respectively. Gibson also scored three extra point conversions. Senior end Charlie Joiner was also not to be denied. Joiner added 25 markers to the Panther coup and captured the area scoring title with a total of 110 points for the season. LSU Releases Grid Schedules BATON ROUGE (Spl.) Seven home games are featured on the 1965 LSU football schedule approved by the Athletic Council Athletic Director Jim Corbett has announced. Corbelt also said that six home games arc slated for 1966 as the schedules for both years wore approved at the same time. A unique feature of the 1965 schedule is the fact that the Tulane game, traditionally scheduled in the afternoon, will be played at night in Tiger stadium November 20. Six conference games are carded for both years along with traditional games with Southwest conference foes Texas and Rice. Miami (Fla.) and South Carolina re-appear on both schedules, replacing Tennessee and North Carolina.

Next year, Tiger fans will bo able to see eight games without too much difficulty. In addition to the seven home games, Ole Miss at Jackson w'ill put the eighth game within easy driving distance. Only Miami at Miami and Florida at Gains- ville arc regarded as long trips. The Bengals will open their 1965 slate against Texas in Tiger stadium September 18. Other home games include Rice, Kentucky, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi State and Tulane.

In 1966, the Tigers will open against South Carolina September 17, followed by Rice in Houston, Miami and Texas at Baton Rouge, Kentucky at Lexington, Florida and Ole Miss at Baton Rouge, Alabama at Birmingham, Mississippi State at Baton Rouge and Tulane at New Orleans. 1945 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Dote Opponent Time Sept. Nearly the same situation exists in 5-AA. Crowley is leading with a 3-0-0 record but faces always-dangerous Morgan City this week. Catholic of New Iberia is 3-1-1, the same as Rayne. Catholic plays Cathedral this week while Rayne has a non-conference date with Scott, but Rayne's regular date with Franklin was scratched by the hurricane and might have to be rescheduled to decide the issue since Rayne and Catholic tied in their regular meeting. For another tangle, look at District 5-A.

St. Michael is 4-0-0 and plays Judice (3-1-1). Hanson is 3-1-0 and has a date with Erath (2-4), while Iota is stilt in the running for one of the spots with a 3-1-1 record. The Bulldogs play Hackberry in a non-league tilt this week. Mt.
