Grant Irving hasn't blown his nose since 1933. He insists that his "don't blow" idea prevents the common cold from lasting for more than two or three days and shouldn't be sneezed at. People with colds who do blow run the risk of prolonging their illness for weeks, says Irving, who is chief medical director of the Aetna Life Insurance Co. Irving has a band of about 200 followers who, lie says, have been adhering to his advice For years and who will tell you that he's right. It was 31 years ago, while he was a graduate student at Edinburgh University in Scotland, that Irving first learned of the dangers of nose blowing from a professor of ear, nose and throat surgery.

Irving offers this explanation: "When an individual blows his nose, he not only expels infected mucus into his handkerchief, but also forces it into the sinuses. "As a result, the lining membrane of the sinus becomes in-! fcctecl and pours out its own mucus. Eventually the sinus fills and a spillover into the nasal cavity occurs. he blows his nose and the 'vicious that keeps the cold alive begins again."
