Michael Shaefer was killed by a bullet wound to the left side of his head about 2 p.m. yesterday. He is believed to have died before a pickup truck in which two companions were rushing him to a hospital careened off a Mo. 32 curve and crashed in a cow pasture two miles east of here. According to Sheriff Lawrence Rifenburg and Coroner Max Pickering, Shaefer was on the banks of the river about 17 miles southeast of here with his older brother, John, and 17-year-old Randy Garrett, when the tragedy occurred.

The only actual witness was Garrett, who told authorities the revolver discharged while Shaefer was loading it. The victim's brother, John, was about 500 feet upriver from Garrett and Shaefer, armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, when the shooting occurred; authorities were told. He and Garrett carried the victim 800 feet to the truck before heading toward town with him. At about 2:30 p.m., the truck careened off the road. Garrett and the victim's brother removed the boy's body from the vehicle, placed it beside the road and flagged down a pass-' erby.

The passerby notified a citizens' band radio emergency squad, which relayed the message to the sheriffs office at 2:40 p.m. Coroner Pickering said he believed Shaefer died shortly after he was shot, but said his companions apparently did not realize he was dead until after the accident.
