General Manager Larry Doughty said Tuesday he will contact the general managers of California baseball teams to see what interest they have in the 1990 National League most valuable player. Bonds, who is building a house in San Diego, has talked often of returning to the West Coast. If Bonds were to play in Pittsburgh in 1992 and then sign elsewhere as a free agent, the Pirates would receive only a draft choice as compensation.

Doughty didn't hide his displeasure with Bonilla's huge contract or with Pittsburgh's inability to sign him, a situation he tried to prevent. "I thought it was ridiculous, Doughty said of Bonilla's record contract, which includes a $1.5 million signing bonus and $1.5 million in guaranteed endorsements. "I think it's going to have a big impact on baseball.

I think there are at least 15 to 20 other players who should make as much or more than him." In a thinly veiled criticism of former team president Carl Barger, Doughty said he suggested re-signing Bonilla last winter when his asking price was $18 million. "But my recommendation was put in File 13," Doughty said. "If our organization had done what I said last year, Bobby would have been signed." Bonilla said Tuesday he would have signed with the Pirates as late as September for their final offer of $22.5 million. x. Buffalo N.Y.

He also has won two consecutive Gold Glove awards for defense. "Barry knows he's a better player than Bobby, and he'll tell you so," Doughty said.
