Sunday, August 16,1981 Ukiah Dally Journal, Ukiah, Calif Even the losers get lucky sometimes. These pears didn't make the grade. The high standards imposed on premium Bartlett pears have given Lake and Mendocino Bartletts the highest rating in the country. These pears won't appear at the corner grocery store. Instead they're off to the cannery where they may be used for canned pear halves, fruit cocktail, baby food or some other pear product.

High school and college kids mingle with housewives and seasoned farm workers in Alex Thomas' pear-packing shed just off of South State Street in Ukiah. They work hard and fast. They have to, because the pears will all be harvested and shipped or put into cold storage within a month. To protect them on the extra-long and rough trips, these workers ace hand wrapping every pear before boxing mem. Their hands move with lighting speed and they just manage to keep up with the conveyor belts moving empty boxes and pears.

Huge bins, like these along Talmage Road, await pickers at the 50 or more pear orchards in the county bearing names like Hooper, Hildreth, Todd Luchessi. The harvest this year should be about 50,000 tons worth nearly $8 million the county's largest ever. Two dozen forklifts whip around Alex Thomas' packing shed moving these hefty bins of pears. Each ranch stacks their pears separately so they can be weighed and valued, but in the end, all the pears go to market together.
