It all began when Paramount, unsuccessful in casting a girl to play the role of "Panther Woman," threw the part open via a nationwide contest.

Sixty thousand women applied. None of the known players in Hollywood possessed exactly the qualities of feline grace, beauty and charm that were required for the part. To make the final decision, heavyweight directors were chosen: Ernst Lubitsch, Cecil B. DeMille, Norman Taurog, Rouben Mamoulian and Erie C. Kenton, the last the director of the movie.
