Seven Sunday, July 4, 1965 BERT'S EYE VIEW 'Petticoat' lead Actress Claims She's 'Character' wd By BERT RESNK TV and Radio Editor WHEN SHE WAS 12 YEARS OLD, Bea Benaderet sang a minor role in a children's production of "The Beggar Opera" on a San Francisco radio station. The manager of the station immediately signed her for a featured'spot as a vocalist on one of his programs. She's been in show business ever since that time. It's a career that included Gertrude Gearshift, a Brooklyn telephone operator, on "The Jack Benny Program." She had regular roles in television on "My Friend Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet "The Great Gildersleeve," "Fibber McGee and Molly and Meet Millie." In all those series, she had character roles rather than the leads. "I still think of myself as a character," she said.
