Saturday, May 4, 1991 QUAD-CITY TIMES RIEF Lf BASEBALL ft In Q-C Angels' Martin returns after a frustrating 1990 Niners sign Young to $4.5 million deal By Steve Batterson QUAD-CITY TIMES STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS Justin Martin likes his view of the action at Quad-City Angels games a lot better this season than the front row seat he had a year ago. A reliever on the Angels' pitching staff, Martin is glad to be back on Quarterback Steve Young, the backup to Joe Montana, has agreed to a new two-year contract with the San Francisco 49crs that will make him the highest-paid reserve in the NFL. Sources said Young, who will be 30 in October, will be paid S4.5 million over two years. Earlier, he had six weeks of heavy rehabilitation on the elbow before leaving early for the Angels spring training camp in Arizona. "With the rain we have in Oregon, I.

wanted to take advantage of the better climate and it turned out to be a pretty wise investment," Martin said. "I was able to get in a lot of work and that seems to be paying off." Quad-Cities pitching coach Joe Georger has noticed the difference, too. "He's a lot more confident out there now," Georger said. "We want to make sure he's fully recovered so we are bringing him along slowly. The five innings he worked (on Tuesday) was probably his longest outing in three years and that's helped." Martin is seeing sporadic action now, working into the reliever's rotation every third or fourth game.

"Hopefully, I'll be back into my role and be available more often later this summer once the weather warms up," Martin said. "I just want to get back into the regular routine. Physically and mentally, I'm back. I just want to keep that going." get back and pitch in the (Midwest League championship) series. At least then I didn't feel like the year was a total loss." Martin did finish with a 2-0 record and recorded one save in 1990 in 12'j innings of work, seeing work primarily as the late inning set-up man for closer Mike Hook.

Now, the right-hander said he is in perfect health and his numbers back that up. Already, Martin has worked 15 innings and he has a 2-1 record to show for it in the young Midwest League season. Excluding a rough outing on April 16 against Beloit, Martin is 2-0 and has an earned run average of 1.88. He has struck out 20 batters and walked just three in 14'j innings. "It's nice just to be able to go out and pitch again," Martin said.

"I don't have to worry about things and I'm feeling comfortable on the mound again." Martin spent the offseason in his hometown of Salem, and the 1987 draft pick out of Mt. Hood Community College put in i the mound after spending the bulk of the 1990 season on the disabled list with ligament damage in the elbow on his throwing arm. The right-hander was first sidelined on May 23 and didn't return to action until Aug. 13. "It was hard to sit and Mil I J.

Dodging the drops Cold, damp April weather does not bring a lot of fans through the gates of Midwest League stadiums, including Davenport's John O'Donnell Stadium. But General Manager Mike Tatoian said he is pleased with the number of fans who have attended the Angels' 10 home games in April. "We've been able to get our games in and our attendance is about the same as last year. Here, our June, July and August dates are so good that April and May tend to be a little discouraging at times," Tatoian said.

"We've been fighting the weather. Most people don't really want to come out and sit in this weather but we really appreciate the people who have been out." The Angels drew 20,592 to their 10 April dates, an average of 2,059 per game. That compares with an average of 2,267 through 1 0 games a year ago. The Quad-Cities and Springfield are the only two teams in the league who have not had a game postponed yet this season. The Angels had 12 rainouts a year ago.

Keeping tabs Several members of the 1990 Quad-City Angels, the Midwest League champions, are off to good starts elsewhere in the California organization this year. Through games at mid-week, Chad Curtis was having the best start. Playing at AAA Edmonton, Curtis is batting .328 after 1 7 games. He has collected seven stolen bases and 1 1 doubles. At AA Midland, Damion Easlcy is batting .259 and Bobby Jones is off to a .233 start.

With the Angels' other Class A team in Palm Springs, Corey Kapano sports a .237 average after the Angels' first 1 7 games. Quad-City Angels cen-terfielder Clifton Garrett was off and running to a successful 1991 season before he sprained his right ankle during an Angels' win at Clinton last week. The injury placed Garrett, who led the Midwest League in stolen bases at the time, on the 10-day disabled list but he may not be able to return when he is scheduled to go off the list on May 5. "The ankle looks like it's going to need more treatment," Quad-Cities Manager Mitch Scoane said. "He's seeing a specialist and we're hoping to get him back as soon as he can go." Garrett stole nine bases in the Angels' first 12 games this season.

He carried a .350 batting average and still rates among the team leaders in walks. He earned 15 free passes before the injury. "He was doing everything we'd ever ask from a leadoff hitter," Scoane said. "We'll be ready for him to come back when he's healthy but as a team, we've well did in overcoming all of our injuries so far." A Rush-ed return For the fourth straight season, shortstop Eddie Rush is wearing a Cedar Rapids Reds uniform. Rush was originally scheduled to spend the season with Cincinnati's top Class A affiliate in Charleston, W.

but was sent back to the Midwest League after Cedar Rapids second baseman Kevin Riggs was put on the disabled list last weekend. Riggs had locked himself out of his apartment and after returning home after Cedar Rapids' 6-3 win over the Quad-City Angels on Friday, figured the only way he could get in was to break a window. He did, cutting open his throwing arm in the process, a move that required 30 stitches.
