Before his dramatic hit, Aylward had gone 0-for-5. He tagged White Sox relief pitcher Mike Mongiello for the two-base hit to left-center field. The speedy Easley was off with the pitch and scored easily with the winning run.

"It was a fastball I hit; earlier in the series they threw me a lot of off-speed stuff," Aylward said. "He is a fastball pitcher and came with his best stuff. I had gone 0-for-5 but hit the ball hard. It feels good right now, I knew this team wasn't out of it." The win gave the Angels a 3-1 winning margin in the best-of-five Midwest League Championship series. It also marked the first time the Quad-Cities has won a league title since 1979.

"I knew they'd come back and win it; I just knew it," Angels Manager Don Long said. "They came back during the second half of the season and I knew they could do it." Les Haffner picked up the win for the Angels in relief of starter Norm Montoya. Haffner went five innings and allowed just one hit to raise his record to 6-1. ASSOCIATED PRESS Fifth-seed Gabrlela Sabatinl of Argentina Jumps for Joy after winning her semifinal match against Mary Jo Fernandez Friday at the U.S. Open. Graf, Sabatini meet for title NEW YORK (AP) Steffi Graf, back to her old tricks, and Gabriela Sabatini, showing off some new ones in an acrobatic extravaganza, set up a clash in today's final of the U.S.

Open tennis tournament. Graf, the two-time defending U.S. Open champion, delivered a crushing one-two combination, knocking out Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 6-1, 6-2 in 54 minutes Friday to reach the final for the fourth straight year. Sabatini, unveiling a new and formidable net attack, had to work for 2 hours, 43 minutes before subduing American teen Mary Joe Fernandez 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. Sabatini put together a string of brilliant backhand drop volleys to break Fernandez in the final two games.

Leaping almost horizontally to the ground, spinning through the air and tumbling fearlessly on the hard court, Sabatini put the match away. "Yes, I think I'm ready to win," said Sabatini, who lost to Graf in the finals here two years and is still looking for her first Grand Slam victory. "I really wanted to do well in this tournament. I showed it in this match. I showed it in all my matches, and I'll show it tomorrow.

I think I'm ready to beat Steffi. I'll have to start right from the beginning to take control of the match." Fans are trying to steal parts of park CHICAGO (AP) Two men trying to steal home from Comiskey Park Friday got tagged by police, who are striving to keep fans from carrying away the nation's oldest baseball stadium before it closes for good this month. The pair was caught trying to slip out of the park on the city's South Side shortly after 1 a.m, officials said. But game-day fans have been bolder. They've tried hiding in departing crowds with chairs even bathroom fixtures under their arms.

"Anything that's not nailed down (is a temptation)," Dominic Rizzi, chief of security at Comiskey, said. "And anything that is nailed down, they're going to try and remove it anyway." Comiskey opened July 1, 1910, and closes Sept. 30. Its replacement is going up across the street and opens next spring. "We've got back-to-back distinctions here, and any memorabilia, I think, is going to be cherished," Rizzi said.

A security force of off-duty police officers is being increased as the season wanes, Rizzi said, but he declined to provide specific figures. "It's more than .100," he said. Rizzi noted the White Sox organization has the largest budget in the major leagues for security. The extra officers, he said, are mainly to control the large crowds that have flooded the stadium this year amid the nostalgia of Comiskey's last season and excitement over the Sox. But officials also are watching for an increase in theft attempts.

Rizzi called Friday's case rare. Two men went over a 12-foot wall using a ladder, pried home plate loose and were leaving with it when park security saw them and called on-duty police. One of the men was caught after throwing the plate over the outside wall and dropping down after it. The other was arrested in the park.
