QUAD-CITY TIMES Tuesday, Sept. 4, 1990 In Brief ear Muscatine's Anderson repeats as all-stater Boston finds capable starters in Harris, Bolton NEW YORK (AP) Every 1 FT si TjT I r.T"' 7" IT p--' 'S If V- v. 111 tffv I THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Third baseman Sarah Anderson of Muscatine was named first-team all-state in softball for the second straight year by Iowa coaches, sports writers and broadcasters. 2 i 1 big leaguer wants a season he can point out on the back of his baseball card. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

When the abbreviated spring training started, Anderson Pena Among others named to the first team were catcher Nikki t- i Greg Harris and Tom Bolton didn't know exactly how they figured in the pitching plans of the Boston Red Sox. In fact, Red Sox manager ASSOCIATED PRESS Harris Bill Doran gathers his thoughts after being trade to Cincinnati Friday. Doran wonders where he fits in By Todd Jones SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE Joe Morgan wasn't quite sure what he had after Roger Clemens and Mike Bod-dicker. Bolton improved to 8-2 Sunday night as the Red Sox beat the Yankees for their 10th straight victory. Harris, a reliever for most of his 10 years, is 12-5 with a 3.17 earaed-run average.

It's a combined 20 wins the first-place Red Sox weren't exactly counting on in April. "I think our pitching has surprised everyone," Morgan said. "There was Clemens and Bod-dicker and then everybody was asking me where the wins were going to come from?" The Red Sox rank second in the American League in ERA (3.55), and have allowed the few every day. I just want to help them. They don't need me to win this thing." In his first start for Cincinnati, Doran went two-for-four, batted in a run with a double, stole a base and scored a run.

He came off the bench to single on Saturday. Doran is batting .291 in 1 1 1 games and his on-base percentage ranks fourth in the National League. Piniella is still vague about how much he'll play Doran but said he can be used at third, shortstop or second to give Sabo, Barry Larkin or Mariano Duncan an occasional rest. "This kid is an athlete," Piniella said. "I knew that when we got him.

One of the reasons we got him is to spell Sabo. Plus, he gives us a pretty good bat and speed." Doran, a free agent at the end of this season, said he's not thinking about his long-term future with the Reds, even if Cincinnati wants to keep Doran. The move to third was smooth for Doran. He said he has no problem with the longer throw. As for his emotions, they're up.

"It puts a charge in my personality," Doran said of the trade. "It was a struggle going out there (for the Astros) 1 8 to 20 games out, because my whole career I was accustomed to being at least close. I feel like a kid with a new toy right now." Now that the Cincinnati Reds have Bill Doran, they're trying to figure where to put him. Doran, acquired from Houston for three players to be named, said he's willing to play anywhere at anytime. Manager Lou Piniella rested third baseman Chris Sabo Sunday and played Doran in his place against the Chicago Cubs.

A career second baseman, Doran had never played third in a major-league game. He fielded two grounders with no problems. "It's completely different seeing the ball off the bat," Doran said. "But as the day went on, I felt more comfortable. I don't think it's a move you make where you can go over in one game and feel like you've been there all your life." The move that sent Doran to his hometown team is making him feel very comfortable.

Houston is languishing in fifth place. "I couldn't be in any better situation than I am now," said Doran, a regular for the Astros. "I'm just thrilled to be here at this time. I'm ready to do whatever they ask. "They have so many guys playing well, I'd be foolish to think I'm going to step in here and play est home runs 3).

Bolton, 28, was a 20th-round selection in the June 1983 free agent draft and had been bouncing around the minor leagues since 1980. He entered this season with a lifetime record of 2-7 with one save in 6 1 games. Bolton, Harris and rookie Dana Kiecker have a combined record of 26-13 without the benefit of a full season in the rotation. Quad-City Angels statistics Ortegon has handle on career By Steve Batterson QUAD-CITY TIMES SOUTH BEND, Ind. They are pitcher Vicki Thompson and outfielder Heather Datersof LDF-SEMCO, outfielder Heidi Butz of Cedar Rapids Jefferson and utility player Ginger Reams of Charles City.

Betsy King set the record of $654,132 last year. Daniel birdied the first two holes on Monday, added a birdie at No. 6 to turn at 1 1 under, then birdied 12 and 13. A bogey at 14 was offset by a birdie at 1 7. She finished at 203, 1 3 under for three rounds over the Rail Golf Course.

Amato, of Old Forge, claimed the Top Fuel title with a quarter-mile run of 5.042 seconds at 270.83 mph in the Team Val-voline dragster to defeat Frank Hawley. The victory, Amato's third U.S.

Nationals title, moves him into a 450-point lead over defending Winston Champion Gary Ormsby, who was ousted in the first round. Ed McCulloch, of Hemet, walked away with his fifth U.S. Nationals title when he defeated Tom Hoover in Funny Car competition. McCulloch had a 5.382 at 269.70 in his Olds Cutlass to defeat Tom Hoover, of Maple Grove, Minn. Eckman, of Ventura, used a quicker starting line reaction time to edge Larry Morgan for the Pro Stock title.

Eckman had a 7.352 at 187.26 in his Pontiac Trans-Am. Horse racing SUPER WIN: Super Abound, making the most of a 12-pound advantage in the weights, beat Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled by three-quarters of a length in the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington International Racecourse on Monday. Super Abopnd was coupled in the betting with Unbridled, his stableftiate, so the order of finish made no difference to those in the crowd of 2 1 1 1 2 who made the entry the favorite. Both colts are owned by Frances A. Genter of Minneapolis.

Super Abound, who earned 1 50,000 from the $250,000 purse, went l'A miles in 2:01 3-5 in winning the 16th edition of the Secretariat. The 2-year-old brown gelding battled for the lead right out of the gate in the 400-yard sprint, outdueled the previously undefeated filly Quick Fun down the stretch, and was drawing away at the wire. The victory was worth $1 million for Arlington, Texas, horseman and roofing contractor James Helzer. Helzer purchased the horse for a reported 150,000 in late June and had to pay a $50,000 late fee to get the speedster into the trials that determined the futurity field. While batting only .224, his team-high 70 walks has helped the 5-foot-9 Ortegon reach an on-base percentage of .340. I started out slow this year at the plate this year," Ortegon said. "That was disappointing but I stuck with it and I feel I've turned, things around a bit." His 74 runs scored ranks him second on the Quad-Cities team behind only Chad Curtis. Angels Manager Don Long said Ortegon's ability to get on base has meant a lot to his lineup. "He gives us good production for a No.

2 hitter," Long said. "He's starting to pull the ball better and his improvements at the plate have been good this year. Even when things aren't going his way, he hangs in there." Still, Ortegon expects more. "The numbers still aren't where I want them but I'd trade that in for a year like this year," Ortegon said. Ortegon has gotten the job done all season for the Quad-Cities.

Sitting out just four of the Angels' 144 games, Ortegon has committed just nine errors. "He's one of the best first basemen I've been around," Long said. "He's always been a good fielder and he works hard to maintain that ability." Knowing that he was the only true first baseman on the Quad-Cities roster, Ortegon has taken a serious approach to his job. "It's felt good over there all year. I've worked hard at defense all my life and this year it gives me a little added -(Confidence knowing that I'm the only first baseman," Ortegon said.

Angels face former Sterling pitcher tonight Continued from Page ID of power they hit 50 home runs this season compared with the Angels' 88 but South Bend does have speed, and Patterson uses it. South Bend stole 154 bases this season in 280 attempts. In addition to Moore, Long's pitching schedule includes Fili Martinez (13-7) in Game 2 and Steve King (10-9) in Game 3 Thursday when the series shifts to John O'Donnell Stadium. "They hit the ball fairly well, and I think they added a couple of guys to their pitching staff after the draft," Long said. "They're that's why they're playing now.

We just have to go out and play the same way we have been." Former Sterling, 111., Jrep Danny Matznick will start today for the White' Sox. South Bend's Len Brutcher (11-4), one of the league's ERA leaders, will miss the championship series because of a shoulder injury. "We're playing pretty well right now," Patterson said. "We've had to play well to get In. I think that the troubles we had winning earlier probably helped this group.

It bifilt a lot of character in the club, and they've handled adversity better during games.".
