Some of those fans, Schultz) If?" -tor i RuM ra il fv Hi Augustana runs past North Park By Jim Gross QUAD-CITY TIMES CHICAGO Saturday in the Windy City, the Augustana Vikings showed the North Park Vikings who the real Norse warriors were by sending them to football's of Valhalla, with a 48-7 drubbing.

Augustana, the No. 1 rated Division III school in the country, rolled up 467 yards on the ground, as four Augie running backs were over or near 100 yards. Augustana improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin play while North Park goes to 0-3. On the day, wing-back Rick Papke took top rushing honors with 110 yards, followed by James Fambro's 96 yards. He also tallied two touchdowns.

Fullback John Hitchcock returned to action after missing last week's game due to bruised ribs and gained 90 yards on 14 tries. Freshman Mario Wiggins added 75 to lead the reserve backs. Augustana Coach Bob Reade was pleased to see his hard-running fullback return. "Hitch hasn't played for a couple of weeks and he's well again. Naturally, I'm playing him again," Reade said.

"We got to get him running a lot more. That's why we gave him the ball early in the game to make sure he was okay." The Vikings started the sacking and plundering early. They scored on their first five posssessions to ring up a 34-0 halftime bulge. Meanwhile, the tough Augustana defense- allowed only two first-half first downs and shutdown potentially dangerous North Park quarterback, John Love. North Park even opened the contest with a gimmicky, no-huddle, shotgun formation complete with an unbalanced line which netted negative nine yards on its first three plays.

"That's not an unusual thing for us to see over the years," Reade said about the use of the trick offense. North Park Coach Mel Boeh-land admitted that a trick offense wasn't the -answer, and quickly shelved it after the first series. "Sometimes you can out-coach yourself," Boehland said. "We went back, to the basic stuff and did well. "In the second half, our kids never gave up.

That at least gives us something to build on." The basic stuff resulted in a 13-yard scoring toss to Craig Smith in the third period to cap a 62-yard drive. That TD was the first scored on Augustana this year. After Saturday's rout, things get serious for Augustana in the next two weeks. The Vikings battle probably its two toughest foes when Carroll comes to Erickson Field next Saturday, and then journey to Whea-ton the following week. pain By earro Bates QUAD-CITY TIMES IOWA CITY J.

Rubley's hurts weren't just coming from his slightly separated right shoulder Saturday afternoon. As a dozen reporters huddled around the Tulsa University quarterback in the cramped dressing room, Rubley tried to explain a 30-22 loss after the Golden Hurricane team had commanded a 22-17 lead in the fourth quarter at a sunshine-filled Kin-nick Stadium. "We gave this game away; there's no comfort in coming close to a victory," Rubley said. "We had our chances to win but just couldn't get the job done and it hurts." Another thing that hurt the former Davenport West prep was his shoulder, injured in Tulsa's initial drive of the game. It happened on a third down pass from the Iowa 7-yard line that fell incomplete, with the visitors one play later grabbing a 3-0 lead on the first of a record five field goals by David Fuess.

"The Iowa guy (defensive tackle Jim Johnson) hit me from the side and I had my arm extended," Rubley said. "I didn't get my follow-through as he knocked me down." Rubley, who earlier this season set a Tulsa career passing mark with another year plus the rest of this season to go, made a hurried trip to the dressing room to get the injury checked out. He wound up not seeing his replacement, Frank Cassano, complete a 81- Hawks set sights By Steve Batterson QUAD-CITY TIMES IOWA CITY Tickets to Iowa football games this fall have included a ride on the Hawkeye rollercoaster. Iowa's emotional ups and downs have been enough to make even the most avid rollercoaster freak a little queazy so far in the Hawkeyes' 2-1 campaign. Nobody would like to see the ride stop more than the Iowa defense.

Linebacker Brad Quast, seeing his most extensive action of the season with an 11-tackle effort in Saturday's 30-22 win over Tulsa, said the Hawkeyes must put things together in a hurry. "We've got a lot of work to do before Michigan State," Quast said. "As a team, we need to keep the emotion high at all times. We can't play the way we've played so far this season and expect to win in the Big Ten." Quast is hopeful his experience will help Iowa prepare for Saturday's home game with the Spartans. "It's a new season now and we have to be ready on every play," 2d 4 mmm "I usually save those for the Big Ten but today, it gave us momentum and it gave us a shot we needed," Fry said.

George Murphy added the PAT kick and after Brad Quast intercepted a Rubley pass, the Iowa kicker extended the Hawk-eyes' lead to 17-13 with a 35-yard field goal. Fuess' third Meld goal of the game, this one from 22 yards, pulled the Hurricanes within 17-16 with three seconds left in the first half. Two more Fuess field goals helped Tulsa take a 22-17 lead with 14:19 left in the game, but Stewart's touchdown runs of 14 and 18 yards in the final 12:24 of the game squelched the Hurricanes' upset bid. Stewart led Iowa's rushing attack with 40 yards on 14 carries. The second score followed Hook's fumble recovery and Tulsa Coach Dave Rader said it drained his team's emotion.

The 63-yard pass went for a touchdown to give the Hawkeyes their first lead, 14-13. (QUAD-CITY TIMES photo by John Schultz) Hawks manage to hold off Hurricanes yard tipped touchdown pass to split end Dan Bitson. As it turned out, that was the only touchdown Tulsa would score on this day as its record dropped to 3-2. Four other times, the Golden Hurricane team got inside the 15 but had to settle for Fuess' field goals. Rujbley returned to the game in the second period to engineer those drives, and had pretty good statistics to show for his effort.

He was 20-of-36 for 208 yards, but did suffer a pair of interceptions. "When the doctor took me into the dressing room to look at the shoulder, he told me it was going to be sore if I tried to play," he said. "I could still throw the ball, but I just couldn't do it time after time. "Apparently, it's what they call a first degree shoulder separation, not that serious. I should be ready to go for our next game." Rubley's first interception came in the second quarter, with Iowa linebacker Brad Quast picking off the ball The final one came with under a minute left as Tulsa desperately tried to get the ball downfield for a possible tie.

However, Tork Hook intercepted. "I shanked the first interception, and the second one I never did see because I was on my back," Rubley said. "Iowa's defense was giving us the pass over the middle but nothing on the outside so that's why we threw a lot of short passes." on smoother path Quast said. "I can share my experiences with the younger players and that should help." Iowa Coach Hayden Fry said his team has to improve its consistency but was pleased his team made it through Saturday's game with just one injury. Noseguard Rod Davis left the game in the first half with torn cartilage in his rib cage.

Fry said Davis may return for Saturday's game. "We're not as consistent as we'd like to be but a lot of that has to do with how young we are," Fry said. "When we did the right thing, we looked fine but we need to keep the pressure on." Merton Hanks, who had a fourth quarter blocked punt that helped Iowa thwart a possible Tulsa comeback, said the Hawk-eyes improvements in the next week must be dramatic "If we're going to have a shot at Michigan State, we have to play better," Hanks said. "Everybody is trying; it's just a matter of not executing the right things at the right time. We can fix our problems and hopefully, we wilL" two third-and-one situations," Fighting Bees Coach John Furlong said.

"We did a poor job of executing plays and the Falcons went in and scored after each one. That was the big diffrence." Quaterback Tim Jackson put the Fighting Bees on the scoreboard first with a 42-yard scoring pass to split end Dana Hoi-geraon in the second quarter. Jason Seboldt gave the visitors a 7-0 lead with his extra point kick. After a 79-yard touchdown run by halfback Price Davis and a field goal by Andy Feil put River Falls up 9- 7, Jackson found split end David Miller in the end zone from 28 yards away for a 13-9 lead.
