2D QUAD-CITY TIMES Saturday, May 26, 1990 mcB is a Mt SPORTS In Brief Hitting instructor's tips help Angels' Jones breaks out of slump I fir. Bears' coach will wait to pick his quarterback THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Uncertainty is calling the signals again for the Chicago Bears, who once more will head to their July training camp without a starting quarterback named, team officials said Friday. One of the contenders, Mike Tomczak, suggested that Coach Mike Ditka should name the starting quarterback before training camp, but Ditka didn't go along. Ditka said Thursday that Tomczak would have to compete for the job against Jim Harbaugh and rookie Peter Tom Willis. "I think we will have more than one starting quarterback, regardless of what Mike Tomczak or anybody else feels," Ditka said.

Ditka said he would rather see the candidates, particularly Tomczak and Harbaugh, compete for the starting position. "Our job is to try to build the best team we can," he said. "If A fresh start was all Quad-City Angels outfielder Bobby Jones needed. Jones got off to a start that would give most players nightmares. His batting- average on April 22 was .071, and he had one hit in his first 14 at-bats.

A month later, Jones' average had improved to .228, and he has secured himself the No. 5 spot in the Quad-Cities' batting order. "It's good to see some of those hits fi- i nally start to iSST- 'l droD." Jones said "Plavers i like to say that things like that don't get to you but it did. You start thinking about it and then you start pressing to put Jones up some numbers." That was about the time Joe Maddon came to town. Maddon, California's roving hitting instructor, told Jones to forget what had happened in April.

"Joe came in and calmed me down a little bit," Jones said. "He told me not to worry about anything and just go out and play the game and things would take care of themselves." Maddon and Jones went back to the basics. "He had me hitting off the tee, and we started from scratch," Jones, said. "We tried a lot of different things, and things seem to be working." Jones hit .249 last year at Bend after completing his collegiate career at Cal State-Fullerton, 11 1 means some of us are going to have good years. That's what we're looking for this season.

The numbers will take care of themselves." Heavy hitters Steele's Silver Bullets will bring their lofty batting averages and hitting talent to John O'Don-nell Stadium on Wednesday night before the Quad-City Angels' game against the Clinton Giants. The Men of Steele softball team is returning to the Quad-Cities for the third consecutive season. The team's average size is 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds a player. Over the last five years, Steele's has hit almost 23,000 home runs, averaging 16 a game. The only team in slow-pitch history to win a national championship in each of the four softball associations (ASA, USSSA, ISA and NSA), Steele's tours the country playing an average of 300 games a year.

Second baseman Mike Ma-cenko hit 844 home runs during the 1988 season. After hitting .745 in 1988, Macenko "slumped" to a .706 average in 1989. Pitcher Rick Weiterman led Steele's in hitting last year, averaging .760. The team will play a group of local softball players at 6 p.m. prior to the Angels game, which will be another 50-cent beer night following the first pitch of the Midwest League game.

Notes and quotes Notes and quotes from around the Midwest League: Madison's Muskies are living proof that pitching and defense do win baseball games. you ask me (do) I have confidence in both of them; do I think both of them can start, the answer is yes I do." "I think somebody will come out a little ahead of the other," he said. "If not, we can alternate quarterbacks." Tomczak, a six-year veteran, won the starting position last year over Harbaugh after the Bears traded former starter Jim McMahon to the San Diego Chargers. After leading the team to a .500 record in the first half of the season, Tomczak started only three of the re Ditka Despite having one of the weakest hitting teams in the Midwest League, the Muskies own a six-game lead over their Northern Division rivals. Madison, which visits the Quad-Cities next weekend and has a 27-14 record, moved out of the cellar in team batting this week.

The Muskies' .219 team batting average ranks 10th among league teams and is just .003 from 14th place. The Muskies' pitching staff has the league's top team earned-run average, 2.75. "There's no real mystery as to why we're winning," Manager Casey Parsons said. "Our pitching has done it all for us. The weather hasn't helped our hitters, and I think we can swing the bats better.

Hopefully, we're starting to show that." Homer, the Quad-City Angels' mascot, will celebrate his first birthday on Thursday night at John O'Donnell Stadium. Around 15 of Homer's mascot pals will be on hand to celebrate before a 7 p.m. game with Clinton. The 6 p.m. birthday party includes balloons, birthday cake, coloring books and a kick-ball game between the mascots and selected children.

Gates will open at 5:45 p.m. Springfield's Clyde Keller is leading the race for the Midwest League's Rolaids Relief Man Award. Keller has 10 saves. Former Quad-Cities pitcher Brandy Vann is among the top three in points for the award in the California League, where he is pitching in Palm Springs. The point system used for the award combines three points for a save, two for a victory and deducts two for a loss.

"He's probably the best motivator I've ever known," Jones said. "Even as a bench warmer, he made you feel like you were directly involved with the game. He knew how to get you ready, and that's something I still use today." Jones hit in the fifth spot in Manager Don Long's lineup last season at Bend, and he said he was comfortable in the spot. "As a day-to-day player, I know I have to just go out and get ready for each game," Jones said. "If I have a good night, that's great, but I can't rest on that.

Tomorrow's another day and I have to start all over again." As the Angels continue to chase Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League's Southern Division race, Jones, a Citrus Heights, native, wants to continue to contribute to the Quad-Cities' success. The Bears ended 1989 with a 6-10 record. "One thing I would like to see different is for Mike to make a decision and give that starting quarterback the repetitions he needs and the authority he needs," Tomczak said, adding that there has been a lot of turnover in the quarterback position in the past two years. Because of the turnover, Tomczak said the quarterback has lacked the respect needed to guide the team effectively.
