Section QUAD-CITY TIMES Sunday Oct. 30, 1988 United Way campaign has one week left to reach best year ever lion this year to help bridge the "needs gap" in the Quad-Cities. That is $400,000 more than the $5.5 million raised last 1 year. I So far, the cam paign has been collecting at a record-breaking pace. Last week, volunteers announced they had collected nearly $4.5 that it's time to get those pledges in now," he said.

"I want them to be part of our final campaign total announcement Nov. 3." Quad-Citians who would like to give can call the United Way office at 788-3451. Pledges can be taken over the telephone. "By giving to United Way, you're saying I want to do my part for this community. "I want to give to others and make a difference in their lives," Tunstall said.

That difference could be counseling, job training or medical care to name just a few of the 45 United Way agency services, he said. Ivan Diehl, 58, of rural Aledo was killed while trying to fix a heavy earth-moving machine, officials said Saturday. Diehl was pronounced dead Friday afternoon at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo, after an accident at the Keithsburg wildlife preserve, Mercer County Coroner Jim Earl said.

Diehl, a mechanic for Bud Henderson Machinery, Aledo, was helping fix the earthmover. A huge metal part a sort of scraper or shovel had been lifted from the machine and was hanging from a crane. That part became caught in another part of the machine, and Diehl was trying to pry it free when it apparently jolted loose, shot forward and struck Diehl in the abdomen, Earl said. Earl, who performed an autopsy Saturday, said Diehl died from severe internal injuries. HObituary Page 6B i fP mil imi.n I I 'Li ft 'Wl i t.L -1 By Scott Grau QUAD-CITY TIMES The Quad-Cities is about to launch one of the most important new road projects in its recent history.

It's the construction of the Interstate 74-53rd Street interchange in Davenport. The $12.5 million project will close the 53rd Street bridge over Interstate 74 for two years, and reduce 53rd Street to restricted local traffic. The project will be financed with a combination of state, federal and local funds. Construction will take place in phases through 1992. The most important part of the project the widening of 53rd Street from Brady Street to Utica Ridge Road and the construction of the interchange itself should take about two years.

The first phases of the project are well on their way. The paving of Utica Ridge Road from 53rd Street south to 46th Street was completed in October 1987. That cost the city $280,000. In addition the installation of the sanitary sewer system near the planned interchange is nearly complete. is costing the city $800,000.

And work has begun on three new Kimberly Road turn lanes, costing $111,513. Here is how the rest of the project is expected to proceed, once work gets started in the spring: Phase 53rd Street will be widened to four lanes from Jersey Ridge Road to Utica Ridge. Construction should begin in the late spring, and should be completed in 1990. The estimated cost is $1.46 million, with 75 percent of that coming from the federal government. The street will be open only to local traffic, and the 53rd Street bridge over Interstate 74 will be closed entirely during the construction.

East 67th Street, Kimberly Road, Locust Street and River Drive are the alternate east-west connecting streets. Elmore Avenue and Kimberly Road: Construction of the improved intersection should begin in the spring of 1989 and be completed four months later. The cost is expected to be $392,000, with 55 percent of that coming from the state. This project may create traffic problems for east-west travel because it will be going on at the same time as the first phase of the 53rd Street widening. The interchange: The existing bridge should be closed on April 1.

The interchange between Interstate 74 and 53rd Street should be completed by fall 1990. Phase II: Widening 53rd Street to four lanes from Brady Street to Jersey Ridge Road. The city plans to let bids in the spring of 1990 and complete the project by fall. The expected cost is $1.4 million. Utica Ridge Road: The city plans to pave this road from 53rd Street north to Forest Grove Road in the summer of 1991.

The estimated cost is $1.4 million. Phases III and IV: Davenport and Bettendorf will cooperate to widen 53rd Street from Utica Ridge Road to Barcelona Street in the summer of 1992. The project is expected to cost $1.8 million. Police charge Q-C man with assault Danny Vance, 37, of Davenport, was charged with assault after a stabbing at a Davenport tavern, police said. The incident happened about 8:30 p.m.

Friday at Swanee's Wrong Number, 1130 W. 4th. A witness told police that a man who left in a Jeep had a deep gash in his neck after being stabbed. Officials later received a call for an ambulance to 318'2 Myrtle St. When officers arrived, they found John Schneider, 27, of Davenport lying on the floor with a towel wrapped around his neck.

He told police that he and another man were arguing when the other man broke a bottle on the bar and cut his neck. Schneider told police that he struck the other man with an ax handle. Both were were treated and released at Mercy Hospital, where Schneider received 44 stitches in his neck. Vance was being held in the Davenport City Jail on $11,500 bond late Saturday for assault with intent to do injury. Lodge on Saturday looked as though they didn't have a care in the world. It was difficult to tell that these excited youngsters dressed in their Halloween finest as goblins and witches are cancer patients, many of whom are winning a lengthy battle for their lives. Three groups, the Elks Lodge 298, its female counterpart, the Does 217, and the Quad-City Candlelighters got together to provide the party. Mary Ernst of Davenport is president of the Does and also is involved with Candlelighters a support group for families of children with cancer because her grandson, Jerry Yakish, had a kidney tumor.

Jerry's right kidney was removed when he was only 3 months old. The little tyke is now robust at 20 months of he seemed to be having a swell time while dressed in his bunny suit. Many Candlelighter parents, sisters and brothers attended the party. Volunteer Candlelighters ran the games, and volunteer Does and Elks prepared and served the food. Candlelighter Linda Penney of Rock Island managed the "Wheel of Fortune" booth.

She watched happily as her son, Matthew, 15, joked around. The past' six years haven't always been that much fun. Matthew, now in remission, was diagnosed in 1982 as having a form of leukemia. "I don't know what I would have done without the Candlelighters," she said. "It gives you a place to cry, to know that you're not alone." Elk Lodge' member Lou Orth smiled as he listened to parents discuss the various contests.

"We won," he said, "because we had the party. And we'd like to do this again next year." I Here's the key to when construction will be done on the Interstate 74-53rd Street project. -1. Done. Pave Utica Ridge Road from 53rd Street south to 46th Street.
