Seventh ranked Nebraska smacked Iowa State 51-16, but getting it even worse were the flags atop the stands of Cyclone Stadium and the few fans who stayed for the very bitter end.

One team could use the 45 miles per hour gusts to its advantage and one could not. The wind doesn't hurt a running attack and Nebraska sure has that. The Comhuskers, improving to 9-1, piled up 573 rushing yards in beating the Cyclones for the 11th straight time. It was Iowa State's passing attack that couldn't work with the strong gusting wind and the driving snow. "We couldn't play smash-mouth football against ourselves in our spring game when we had weather like this.

There was no reason to believe we could play smash-mouth football with Nebraska in the same kind of weather," said Iowa State Coach Jim Walden. "We've got to be able to pass or we're in trouble and we were in trouble today." Iowa State didn't complete a pass in the 31-0 first half and had just 49 yards of total offense at halftime. Nebraska had 280 just on the ground, plus another 60 passing. The conditions were so miserable that ISU kicker Jeff Shudak missed his first conversion kick in 33 tries. Walden, however, was not blaming the weather for the loss.

He was realistic. "I don't know how else to say it. We are not as good as Nebraska is," Walden said, emphasizing the point. "Maybe some day we can have that type of team. "I'd like to have the team I left at Washington State here at Iowa State.

Then we might have a chance." As it was, Iowa State had no one to stop the Nebraska rushing attack. Quarterback Steve Taylor had the second-best yardage total of his career with 154 yards on 12 carries. Taylor scored rushing touchdowns Nos. 29, 30 and 31 of his career and passed for No. 30.

"He is a very good player. He showed us some things that all of us had seen but he also showed me something I hadn't seen," Walden said. "He threw a frozen rope 25 yards against that wind right into the chest of the receiver." Iowa State, which made the score look a little better with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, needs to recover quickly. The Cyclones have a chance to win next week at Kansas State. "If I was my players, I'd have forgotten this one 30 seconds after it was over," Walden said.

"I told my players that I was proud of those that were still alive and I hoped they'd all come back Monday." At least one key player won't be back. linebacker Mike Shane; a two-time Big Eight player of the week this season, will likely have knee surgery on Monday. touchdown pass to a wide-open Man Cook. ByDonDoxsle QUAD-CITY TIMES IOWA CITY A few weeks ago, Iowa's defense seemed darn near impregnable. During one five-game stretch at mid-season, the Hawkeyes allowed only four touchdowns and piled up more sacks than a Hy- Vee stock-boy.

It all ended a week ago with a 45-point hiatus against Indiana that left the Hawkeyes frustrated, angry and bent on demolishing whatever offense they faced this week. Enter Northwestern, stage left. Exit defensive frustration, stage right. The Iowa defense thoroughly stifled Northwestern in the first half Saturday, sending the Hawk-eyes on their way to a convincing 35-10 victory at wet and windy Kinmck btadium. "We got emba-rassed a little bit at Indiana," noted Hawkeye noseguard Dave Haight.

"We gave us 45 points and that's just not Iowa defense. We had to come back and show Halght somebody we could stop this week. Admittedly, Northwestern a.k.a. the Mildcats are hardly an offensive juggernaut, but the Hawks made them look even milder than usual Saturday. They held the visitors to just 53 total yards and three first downs before halftime.

Of the 25 plays the Wildcats ran in the half, five netted more than two yards. The Hawks also picked off two Greg Bradshaw passes including one by the irrepressible Haight to set up their second and third touchdowns. A fumble recovery by tackle Jeff Koeppel set up the final Iowa TD. "Iowa's defense, especially the defensive line, has to be credited with shutting down our offense," Northwestern Coach Francis Peay explained. "I am proud of our team's effort, but not happy with its productivity." The Wildcats rolled up a few yards and scored a few points in the second half, most of them against Iowa bench-warmers, but it was far too late.

The Hawkeyes actually probably scored all the points they needed on the opening drive of the game as they bludgeoned 80 yards with 12 straight running plays. Fullback Richard Bass covered the last 11 yards and it was quickly 7-0. wanted to open up the game running the football," Iowa Coach Hayden Fry said, "to run as -much time off the clock as we could while we were going into the wind. "We also knew we were going against the worst rushing defense in the league and we had a guy who needed 115 yards for a season. We tried to accomplish all those things and score some touchdowns, too.

It worked out real good." Well, not perfectly. Running back Tony Stewart only netted 98 yards, leaving him 17 shy of mark, but otherwise the run-in to-the-wind, pass-with-it strategy worked out well. Haight provided some assistance in the second quarter when he reached up at the line of scrimmage and yanked down a Bradshaw bullet over the middle. "Oh man, I've never played in that kind of weather before," noted Iowa fullback Nick BelJ, who grew up in California and Nevada. Injury report Iowa Coach Hayden Fry delighted in the fact that his team may have gone through an entire game without a serious injury. Oh, Defensive tackle Jim Johnson limped off in the second- quarter and is questionable for next week's game against Ohio State.

But injuries to running back Tony Stewart and offensive tackle Bob Kratch were less serious, according to Fry. He also said he expects to get Walden-Osborne feud gets even more tense COMING UP SHORT Jon Filloon dives for the endzone. (QUAD-CITY TIMES photo by John Schultz) Winds create problems at Kinnick By Craig Cooper QUAD-CITY TIMES AMES, Iowa The tense relationship between Iowa State Coach Jim Walden and Nebraska's Tom Osborne was pulled even tighter Saturday. Several Iowa State players thought Osborne, who frequently espouses Christian ideals, demonstrated some funny ideas about fair play in football. Already in Walden front 28-0 in the closing minute of the first half, Nebraska quickly moved into scoring position again with two Steve Taylor passes.

Taylor then threw out of bounds to stop the clock and set up a 30-yard Gregg Barrios field goal with no time remaining. The small portion of the announced crowd of 50,158 which remained on the miserable football day booed lustily. Meanwhile, the, Nebraska players were jumping up and down, congratulating each other and waving at the crowd. Walden did not want to comment, other than to say, "I've done enough talking this week." Osborne explained the decision by saying the game wasn't won yet. 1 It linebacker Melvin Foster, fullback David Hudson and free safety Tork Hook back next week.

"That will probably make us as strong health-wise as we have been since the start of the season," he added. Bad hands? Third-team quarterback Matt Rodgers has temporarily lost his job as Iowa's holder for field goals and extra points. Rodgers bobbled the snap on Jeff Skilletfs 35-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, his second such miscue in as many weeks. The next time the Hawks lined up for an extra point, Tom Po-holsky was the holder. By Don Doxsle QUAD-CITY TIMES IOWA CITY How windy was it Saturday at Kin- tuck btadium It was so windy that Northwestern, instead of taking the ball at the start of the game, chose to have the wind at its back.

It was so windy that all but one kickoff required a holder. It was so windy that when Iowa came up to the line for its first offensive play, a gust of wind blew the ball 10 yards before center Bill Anderson could touch it. That, combined with temperatures in the 30s and occasional snow flurries, made it one miser iii am nl rt n-f v--i 1 ni, i- -I rt ni rfi ft, A-i- I ifn 1 iA rn.t-rJri"t-iii(lr--'J"''J-,,,ii- a a. a a.
