Who's tops on river? Find out May 3 The greatest rivermen and river women of all time will be recognized by the new National Rivers Hall of Fame on the banks of the Mississippi at Dubuque May 3. More than 100 Hall of Fame founders from across the country river historians, conservationists, writers and enthusiasts have cast their ballot for the top four river men or women in American history. The names will be revealed May 3 at the Five Flags Theater, with presentation of honorary achievement awards. THE NATIONAL Rivers Hall of Fame, a non-profit educational effort with members in 25 states, also will conduct an Inland Waters Maritime Preservation Seminar with speakers from across the country. Religion visits Putnam Museum The Putnam Museum, Davenport, hosts a public symposium, "Reformation and Religious Upheaval: Exploring the Roots of Modern Civilization," on Friday and Saturday. The program is sponsored by "The Renaissance a college consortium that includes Augustana College of Rock Island and the University of Iowa, Iowa City. The free public program begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with a concert of Renaissance-era music on flute and harpsichord by Augustana College faculty members Jeffrey Cohan and Tom Robin Harris, followed by a panel discussion, "The Reformation, Then and Now." SPEAKERS WILL be Sister Ritamary Bradley of St. Ambrose College; Augustana College president Thomas Tredway; the Rev.

Robert Sorenson of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport; and Thomas Kalshoven, director of Churches United in the Quad-Cities. Moderator will be Jim Winship of Augustana and WQAD TV. New Hopes Decisively Dashed: Catholic Reform and CounterA panel discussion on "Was the Split Inevitable?" will be moderated by David Crowley of Augustana.

Each presentation will last about 25 minutes, and will be followed by questions from the audience. Speakers will be available for informal discussion at lunch and after the program. The program is a portion of a multi-year series of public forum presentations and discussions throughout Iowa, developed and presented through a cooperative venture of the University of Iowa and area liberal arts colleges. Augustana College is the primary Quad-Cities sponsor. The series explores themes and issues which emerged in the Renaissance of the 14th and 15th centuries and which remain pertinent today.

The seminar, May 2 and 3, is co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and the Maritime Department of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. OTHER EVENTS include a Mississippi River folk concert Friday night and a ceremonial mingling of waters Saturday morning, in which water from each state will be mingled and then poured into the Mississippi, sending it toward the Gulf of Mexico.
