12 Fremont News-Messenger Friday, Dec. 17, 1971 Ohio State Will Alter Lioeop High And Low MARK (s) 811 53 By MARK CARLSON News-Messenger Sports Editor 1M Bobby Todd added two more, the Zips missed a final shot and saw their record fall to 4-1. George Duncan of Bellarmine (5-1) and Harvey Glover and Will Schwarzinger of Akron shared game scoring honors with 17 points apiece. The Boilermakers of Purdue rolled over Miami 85-58 for their fourth home-court victory and fifth win in seven starts. Miami (1-3) never was in contention after the first 10 minutes of play.

Frank Kendrick led Purdue with 24 points, while Larry Garloch paced the Mid-American Conference team with 14. Toledo, also playing outside the MAC, thumped California Poly 79-56 as Tom Kozelko swished 22 points and led re-bounders with 17. Toledo outrebounded the visitors 58-42 and outshot them from the field 44-41 per cent in posting its third victory in four games. Cleveland State kept its record unblemished at 4-0 with a 94-63 win over Kenyon. Bill Johnson and Bill McMeans led the Penguins with 23 points each, while Ed Moran was high for the Lords (1-5) with 13.

Urbana defeated Olivet Nazarene 95-90 in the opening round of the Kiwanis Classic at Spring Arbor, Mich. Mark Todd scored 42 points to lead Urbana into a semifinal clash with host Spring Arbor tonight. "It's downhill for him now on, but it's not worth jeopardizing him now for later on as badly as he wants to play," said Taylor of his star guard. Taylor also said Wardell Jackson, 6-7 sophomore leaper, will be playing more to give Ohio State needed rebounding firepower. In other major college tests Saturday, Miami is at Dayton, Kent State at Utah State, St.

Bonaventure at Bowling Green, Morris Harvey at Toledo and Xavier at Auburn. Cincinnati opens play in the Jayhawk, Classic and Ur-bana, sporting the state's best record of 8-0, participates in the Spring Arbor, Tournament. Elsewhere, Heidelberg is at Walsh, Blackburn at Mount Union, Baldwin-Wallace at South Florida, West Liberty State at Capital, Kenyon at Ball State, Wilberforce at Wooster, Cedar-ville at Ohio Dominica, Malone at Point Park, Alderson-Broaddus at Ashland, San Francisco State at Cleveland State, Illinois Wesleyan at Akron and Steubenville at Fairmont State. 1 In Ohio college basketball action Thursday night, Bellar-mine, upset eighth-ranked small college power Akron 69-68 by sinking five free throws in the closing seconds of play. After Bellarmine's Greg Held hit three free throws and By GEORGE STRODE Associated Press Sports Writer Trying to generate more offense, Coach Fred Taylor will go with a revamped Ohio State basketball lineup Saturday night when the tenth-ranked Buckeyes invade Butler.

The game is the first for the defending Big Ten champion since a 79-68 loss at Ohio University six days ago and tops a 20-contest schedule for Ohio colleges Saturday. Taylor is concerned over the lack of a good attack for his Buckeyes, 3-1 and still without Allan Hornyak, last year's No. 1 scorer recovering from a heel injury. "We're putting too much of a burden on the defense," said Taylor. "We've got to get some offense stirred." Bob Siekmann, a 6-foot-3 junior forward from Cincinnati, and Gary Repella, a 6-3 sophomore guard from Steubenville, probably will replace 6-8 Mark Wagar and 6-foot Dave Merchant as Ohio State starters.

Hornyak, who has not played one minute in the first four games, will make the trip to Butler. He is not expected to see action, however. The 6-2 junior from Bellaire has practiced on a limited basis this week. He probably will make his first appearance against visiting Brown Monday night or Wisconsin-Milwaukee Thursday night. John Lewis, the Fremont Ross grad, is burning up the nets playing for the Firelands Branch of Bowling Green State University Ross' leading scorer last winter has an 18.6 average for the Falcons through their first five games. His high was 31 against OSU-Lima while his low of 13 came against KSU Trumbull His 93 points have come on 42 field goals and nine free throws Firelands has a 5-0 record. Norm 'Biz' Paeth, a Fremont St. Joe and Tampa University grad, who was assistant coach for the Crimson Streaks during the 1969-70 season has his Central Catholic of Tuscarawas County cage squad off to a fine start The Saints are currently 3-0 with victories over Carrollton St. Edward (88-52), Waynedale (65-56) and Malvern (76-60).

The Saints are faced with a stiff challenge Friday when they entertain Caraway, an Inter Valley Conference foe Caraway hasn't lost in league competition for the last four seasons Central Catholic journeys to Brunnerdale Saturday. A total of 18 applications have been received for the vacant Buckeye Conference commissioner post Richard Ackerman, principal at Admiral King, has announced that the application deadline which was originally set for Wednesday has been extended to this weekend Ackerman is chairman of the screening committee that also includes Duane Wamsley, Ross principal, and Arlo Plough, principal at Mansfield. Monroeville's Dick Miller was recently named the Best Freshman Lineman during the Ashland College Football Banquet. 6-2, 220-pound defensive end broke into the starting lineup midway through the season and developed into one of the finest defensive players for the Eagles He racked up 66 tackles, seventh best mark on the team. Miller was coached at Monroeville by Don Graham, who's now the head coach for Clyde.

Rosters for the Ohio High School All-Star North-South football game at Canton next summer won't be announced until late January or early February In the last few years, the North has always announced its team during the first weekend of December while the South has delayed its selections until its coaching staff could view films of various players in its area Now, North coaches have decided they also want to review films. Fremont Ross head coach Chuck Shuff was nominated for a coaching position on the North staff but was bypassed Head coach for the North will be Tom Batta of state champion Warren Harding He will be assisted by Sylvester Smith of Toledo Woodward, Tom Rose of Lorain Catholic and Don Bucci of Youngstown Mooney. Cincinnati Sycamore's Dave Hurt will pilot the South His assistants will include Morris Pfeifer of Washington Court House, Tom Korab of Class AA state champion Steubenville Catholic and Paul Nestor of Columbus Wehrle. Elyria's Ike Maxwell is one of eight players already selected for the North squad Others include Rick Kaczmarek of Toledo Woodward, Gary Anderson (Cory Rawson), Mike Daugherty (Bedford), Don Martin (Mentor), Babe Buckey (Akron Kenmore), Ken Kuhn (Louisville) and Walt Vrabel (Campbell Memorial). Harvey Herrmann, the first and only head football coach at Lorain Southview, has submitted his resignation Herrmann, 33, guided the Saints to a 4-26 mark in their first three season of competition.

Ashland and Mansfield met for the 123rd time on the basketball floor last Saturday with Ashland captured a 57-44 decision from the Tygers It was victory number 54 in the long series for the Arrows. Elyria's sensational running back Ike Maxwell was recently named the top football player in Lorain County for the 1971 season. was selected by a vote of coaches, sportswriters, school officials and representatives of the local referees association. ROSS GRADCITED-Ted Brunner (extreme right), a former Fremont Ross football player, who now toils for Heidelberg College was recently named second team All-Ohio Conference offensive guard. Brunner, who earned his second varsity letter this fall, is shown with Pat Herron, a second team selection at defensive halfback, head coach Pete Riesen and Doug Warne, who was the Most Valuable Player for the Student Princes this fall.

Warne is a former Marion Harding standout. "I don't know what it is," Logsdon said. "These seniors seem to lack the enthusiasm and drive that the seniors on last year's team had. Maybe they have been practicing too long and are just anxious to get the season started." The yount pilot also has to be concerned about depth. "If we have an injury in the lower weight classes we'll have trouble," Logsdon said.

The roster lists only two individuals at 98, one at 105, two at 112 and three at 119. There are also problems in the upper three weights. Beier and Rich Wasserman are the only entries at 175, Gatt is the only entrant at 185 and Courtney is the only heavyweight candidate. Szakovits is also the lone entry at 167, but there are five individuals at 155 and one of those could step up if Szakovits is injured. Szakovits and Burns are both recovering from knee injuries.

The roster by weight class: 98 Steve Gottron and Joe Trevino. 105-Jeff Henry. 112 Umbie Zamora and Mike Foos. 119 Pete Norton, Larry Rulman and Nick Kerosky. 126 Albert Zamora, Denny Durnwald, Shawn Barron, Stan Kupka, John Swartz, Mark LeJuene, and Bruce Frederick.

132 Mark LeJeune, Joe Grob and Dave Gutschalk. 138 Joe Burns and Ken Miller. 145-Kev Cullen. Fremont St. Joe's wrestling squad, after seven weeks of practice, will finally meet outside competition tomorrow.

The Crimson Streaks open their 1971-72 season with an appearance in the tough Toledo Bowsher Tournament. St. Joe is one of eight clubs enUred. Also scheduled to participate are Oregon Clay, Maumee, Port Clinton, Toledo Scott, University High School of Cleveland, Toledo Woodward and the host school. Starting times are noon and 7 p.m.

"It's an excellent tournament," St. Joe head coach Gary Logsdon said today. "We're going to know in a hurry where our strengths and weaknesses are." Logsdon will field a lineup that will include three qualifiers for last winter's state tournament. There will be seven lettermen among the 13 starters, but only one veteran Umbie Zamora in the first four weight classes. The Crimson Streaks will probably have sophomores with no varsity experience at 98, 105 and 119.

Joe Trevino will get the call at 98, Jeff Henry is scheduled to go at 105 but his place might be taken by junior Steve Gottron, who played basketball last winter. Pete Norton has nailed down the 119 spot. After Norton, Logsdon will send Albert Zamora (126), Mark LeJeune (132), Joe Burns (138), Kev Cullen (145), Dave Frederick (155), Jim Szakovits (167), Chuck Beier (175), Phil Plays Comic Role Marinaro Misses Calling Gatt (185) and Dave Courtney (heavyweight) to the mat. The only non-lettermen in the final nine are LeJeune and Gatt. Umbie Zamora, Szakovits and Beier qualified for the state tournament as juniors.

Zamora finished the season with a 22-6 record, while Szakovits checked in at 16-8. Beier had a glossy 27-3 mark and won the Catholic Invitational Tournament title, the Sandusky Bay Conference championship and was also a district champ. Zamora wrestled at 105, while Beier competed at 167 and Szakovits was at 175. All of the other returnees had records better than .500. Albert Zamora was 13-6 at 112, Burns had a 3-0 mark at 132, Cullen went 3-0 at 138, Frederick posted a 6-4-2 mark at 155 and Courtney was 13-5 at 185.

"Until the younger fellows gain some experience we'll be weak in the lower weights," Logsdon says, "but from 126 up we should be pretty tough." The second year coach, who's a St. Joe grad, will be hard pressed to improve on his rookie year. The Streaks were 9-0 last season in dual meet competition. "I'm not going to emphasize the dual meets as much this season," Logsdon said. "We want to win the Sandusky Bay Conference tournament.

Last year we just fell apart and finished" third. There hasn't been a wrestling team wrestling trophy here at St. Joe since 1967. This is the year we have to do it. "The potential is there for us to be very strong.

When a team has five district and state qualifiers returning it should be able to do something." Logsdon is worried about the progress its club has made in practice, however. "Do you have any choice for a pro team?" "Yen, the Bridgeport Bulls. Oh, I guess I'd like to stay in New York, but I'll be happy anywhere I go." Which award did he think was the more important, Heisman or Maxwell? "The Maxwell, because I won it." Was he slowed down off artificial turf? "Nothing can slow me down." Did he have any other observations? "Yeh, don't misquote me." PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Cornell's Ed Marinaro may have missed his calling. Instead of a football player or the hotel management executive he's studying to be, he could be a comedian. The 215-pound Marinaro broke up the news conference called to announce his selection as the Maxwell Club's 25th annual outstanding college football player of the year.

Pat Sullivan, Auburn quarterback who edged Marinaro for the Heis-man trophy, was second in the Maxwell balloting. The Maxwell Club also selected Rober Staubach, Dallas Cowboys quarterback, as recipient of its Bert Bell award as the outstanding pro player of 1971. Miami's Bob Griese was second. Someone asked Marinaro about reaction to his blast at the Heisman Trophy Committee Mike 155 Dave Frederick, for selecting its outstanding player, before the season ended. "Most of the reaction was negative form the south, so in keeping with their opinion of me I'd like to congratulate you on your choice." Marinaro said.

"I hear you're coaching the basketball team." said one wag. "Only on game days," retorted the back who led the nation with an average of 214.7 yards per game last season. Did he expect to carry the ball an average of 39.6 times per game the way he did for Cornell? "You ain't seen nothing yet," responded Marinao, adding that he wants to play pro ball and expects to be drafted in the first round of the National Football League draft. Does he have an agent to negotiate for him with the pros? "I've talked to Howard Cosell about representing me." said Ohio Scores Purdue 85, Miami 58 Toledo 79, California Poly 56 Youngstown State 94, Kenyon Chris Widman, Mike Freeh, LeJuene and Steve Beatty. 167 Jim Szakovits.

Overmyer was picked to the second team as a defensive end. That was quite an honor for the 6-3 and 225-pound senior since he played primarily at defensive tackle this year. Last year he starred at end for the Eagles. Overmyer has gained considerable attention from professional scouts lately and is considered "a top prospect as a pro defensive end or linebacker, due to his excellent speed and strength," said several pro scouts. Last week Overmyer copped honorable mention Association Press All-America laurels.

He becomes the first Eagle to ever be named to two All-America football teams in one year. Last year Len Pettigrew captured AP first-team honors. He is now playing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Coach Fred Martinelli said, "Bill had a great season for us. There aren't many interior linemen who average nearly 13 tackles a game.

This is the first time we have had a player selected to the Kodak Coaches All-America team and I am very proud of Bill's honor, both for him and the college." The other Ohioans named to the squad were Steve Dutton of Ohio Wesleyan University at first-team defensive end, Mike Hatch of Akron University at first-team defensive back and Tom Graham of Baldwin-Wallace College at second-team offensive end.
