(Times photo by Greg Boll) Howthey scored Hawks jump out quickly Continued from Page IB nie Harmon, Larry Station and Bill HappeL None of the three practiced, last week and none played more than a quarter or so. Of course, the game was pretty much over after one quarter.

The Hawkeyes struck for 35 points before the first 15 minutes was up in a period reminiscent of last December's 55-17 slaughter of Texas in the Freedom BowL "We could do no wrong in the first half," Long noted. "I think we proved to people what we can really do." Long took the Hawks down the field after the opening kickoff on a drive that set the tempo for the whole day. On the sixth play of the drive, speedster Robert Smith got behind cornerback Lance Harkey for a 49-yard pass from Long. Rob Houghtlin's kick made it 7-0. Illinois, trying to bounce, ran a reverse on its first play.

David Williams, who ended up catching 10 passes in the game, was nailed for a loss by linebacker George Davis, coughed up the ball, and Iowa's Hap Peterson recovered Four plays later, freshman fullback David Hudson dove into the end zone. It was 14-0. And so it went Trudeau had his interception-less string broken moments later when Jay Norvell made a diving catch of a tipped pass. Long duplicated his TD pass to Smith, this time from 43 yards away, and it was 21-0. A 46-yard scoring run by Harmon one of only nine carries for him made it 28-0 and another Hudson TD with 59 second left in the quarter made it 35-0.

Some of the folks wearing orange and blue raingear in the south end zone were seen edging toward the exits. The Hawks stopped themselves with penalties in their next two possessions but added to the lead later in the second quarter on a pair of TD passes by Long a 1-yarder to Mike Flagg and a 9-yarder to Scott Helverson. The second one came after reserve safety Rick Schmidt picked off a Trudeau pass and returned it 33 yards. The third quarter was scoreless and the Hawks finished off the debacle in the fourth period with a 37-yard field goal by Houghtlin and a 16-yard gallop by Grant Goodman. "I think you spell it momentum," Fry said later, analyzing the outcome.

"We got the momentum and then our youngsters just took over. They were heartbroken and embar-assed last week, but they obviously bounced back. It was a real test of character for them." "Whether we were really that good or Illinois was that down, I don't know," he added. "How can I explain it? It will never happen again in 100 games." Besides Long, other offensive heroes included Hudson, who rushed for 66 yards; Helverson, who caught 8 passes for 69 yards; Quinn Early, who caught 5 for 63; and Harmdn, who netted 88 yards on his 9 carries. Harmon failed to catch a pass, however, snapping a string of 32 straight games in which he had at least one reception.

The Hawkeyes will take an 8-1 overall record, 5-1 in the Big Ten, into a game at Purdue next Saturday. The Boilermakers were routed Saturday by Michigan, 47-0. "Our backs are still against the wall," Long insisted. "That's the way we have to approach it. I think we play better when our backs are against the walL" By Craig Cooper QUAD-CITY TIMES LINCOLN, Neb.

Four straight losses, two by whopping margins, began to take a toll Saturday on the emotions of Iowa -State's football team. Playing the Nebraska powerhouse here has never been pleasant for Cyclone teams but the 49-0 whitewash before a chilled crowd of 75,920 was more unpleasant than usual Especially for baffled Coach Jim Criner, who has heard the grumbling of fans in his third season. In three meetings with Nebraska his teams have been outscored 165-29 and shut out the last two seasons. The third-ranked Cornhuskers rolled up 538 yards with their punishing ground game, but Iowa State was generous to a fault, turning the ball over twice at critical spots on the field and dropping numerous passes which killed drives. Criner was bitingly blunt in his assessment of the situation.

He pulled no punches in his post-game media session. "I'm really down, not because we got beat but down because of the way we got beat" said the dejected coach. "We work our fannies off, the coaches are working so it's enough to drive you crazy. "YOU CAN'T fumble the ball and drop as many passes as we did and not expect to get beat "We've got to recruit players who can catch the football. If you are going to throw the football, you've got to catch it and we didn't do it." Iowa State's self-destructive offense managed just 137 yards and 7 first downs.

Eliminating the mistakes would not have reversed the outcome but it might have been closer. While the Cyclones were slowing themselves down, Nebraska was running over, through and around the ISU defense. Junior Brian Reffn-er, making his first start at safety, was credited with 28 tackles for the Cyclones, including an amazing total of 19 unassisted. "That doesn't speak to well for our defense when a safety is making that many tackles," Reffner said. Nebraska I-back Doug DuBose went over 1,000 yards for the season and 2,000 for his career with 114 and a touchdown.

Powerful fullback Tom Rathman added 97 yards, 32 coming on a touchdown run in the third quarter to make the score 28-0. NEBRASKA Coach Tom Osborne called it his team's best performance of the season. Two weeks ago Oklahoma had its best performance so far this season against the Cyclones. "I really can't find a problem anywhere," Osborne said. "They had quite a few dropped passes, which helped, but we also had good pursuit." When the opposing coach mentions dropped passes, it tell you they were a factor.

There were at least nine that could be counted in that category. Cyclone quarterback Alex Es-pinoza threw one interception which set up a Nebraska touchdown in the second quarter, but he didn't have too bad a day overall. He just got absolutely no help from the receivers. "Anytime guys drop passes I have a tendancy to get frustrated," the junior admitted. "I was frustrated today.

"But there is nothing I can really do. My job is to put the ball where it is supposed to be and their job is to catch it" "Alex did a good job of getting the ball to the right people," Criner Iowa 49, Illinois 0 Long fired a 9-yard scoring pass to Scott Helverson, breaking the Big Ten career record. Klein kick. explained. "He played welL" Turnovers were just as costly as the drops. Both of Iowa State's lost fumbles led immediately to Nebraska touchdowns. FULLBACK Don Porilo fumbled at the ISU 20 with the Huskers needing just three plays before reserve Keith Jones took the ball in from the 1 to make the score 35-0 after Dale Klein's kick.

Kirk Thomas fumbled in the fourth quarter at the Iowa State 13 with Nebraska's Dan Thayer finally stopping the ball at the ISU 1. Fourth team quarterback Steve Taylor scored on first down through a gaping hole to make it 47-0 before Klein kicked his seventh extra point Sandwiched in between was another unusual Nebraska touchdown, which means it was pretty routine for this series. Iowa State's punter Rick Frank had boomed one down to the Nebraska 1. On first down reserve fullback Ken Kaelin didn't go the entire way but did chug away for a 72-yard run. Von Sheppard scored from the 20 on a wingback reverse.

"I went over to talk to him Kaelin) and I thought I was going to have to get out the oxygen mask for him," laughed Rathman. "That's a tough thing to do, he had been standing on the sideline the whole game and he really wasn't all that loose." RATHMAN had little respect for the attitude of the Cyclones. "After we scored a couple touchdowns on them, they were just out there to be out there." Offensively it was one frustration after another for the Cyclones.
