Tvlike Madden, 6-3, and made it in the sixth when he drove in two more runs with a single. Double plays in four of the first five uuiings kept Madden out of further trouble, but a double play the Astros didn't get in the sixth inning cost them dearly. Madden walked pitcher John Stuper, and Lonnie Smith hit an apparent double-play ball to shortstop Dickie Thon, but second baseman Bill Doran muffed the toss for an error. Ozzie Smith's sacrifice bunt advanced Stuper and Lonnie Smith, and McGee came through with a two-run single to make it 4-0. Stuper, 9-8, allowed 10 hits, struck out three and walked one while notching his fourth complete game.

The Astros ruined Stuper's shutout in the sixth on Ray Knight's sacrifice fly. St Louis got that run back in the seventh inning when pinch runner Mike Ramsey scored on two wild pitches by reliever Mike LaCoss. Pirates 2, Reds 1 CINCINNATI Rick Rhoden scattered six hits over seven innings and singled home a run to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds. Rhoden. 10-11, struck out nine and didn't walk a batter, allowing just one runner to reach second base.

He scattered six singles over the first seven innings, then departed in the eighth when his right shoulder stiffened. Kent Tekulve pitched the last two innings for his 16th save, giving up the Reds' run in the ninth on a triple by Gary Redus and groundout by Dave Concepcion. Rhoden singled home a run in the fifth off loser Mario Soto, 14-11, who allowed just five hits over eight innings. Marvell Wynne cracked a solo homer in the third for the Pirates' other run. Soto's eight strikeouts gave him 200 for the season, trailing only Philadelphia's Steve, Carlton, who leads the major leagues with 219.

Expos 5, Giants 0 MONTREAL Recently-acquired Manny Trillo had three hits and drove in two runs and Bryn Smith pitched a six-hitter as the Montreal Expos defeated the San Francisco Giants. Trillo, obtained from the Cleveland Indians on August 17, has 10 hits in 23 at-bats for a .435 average since joining Montreal. Trillo's single brought in Tim Raines from third base with the first Montreal run in the first inning. After Raines had led off with a single against Mike Krukow, 9-8, he stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Bob Brenly. Trillo, after advancing to second on Al Oliver's single, made it 2-0 by racing home on a single by Warren Cromartie.

In the fifth, Trillo led off with his first home run since returning to the National League. He had one homer with the Indians. The Expos moved ahead 4-0 in the sixth on Raines' sacrifice fly and added another run in the seventh on an RBI double by Cromartie. Padres 6, Phillies 5 PHILADELPHIA Sixto Lezcano tripled home the tie-breaking run and tuis Salazar followed with a two-run homer in the eighth to carry the San Diego Padres to a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a rain-delayed doubleheader. The score was tied 3-3 when Alan Wiggins opened the Padres' eighth with a single off Steve Carlton, who failed for the third straight time to gain his 298th career victory.

Instead, Carlton suffered his 14th loss in 26 decisions this season. One out later, Lezcano tripled into the right-center field gap to send the Padres ahead 4-3.
