THE TIMES PAGE D4 I FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 11. 2011 I RO CONTINUED FROM PAGE Dl Judas Priest abbreviated set from the headliners due to time restraints, such is not the case. "We are playing for about two and a quarter hours every night and doing at least one song from every album, which is something we've never done before," said co -founding guitarist Glenn Tipton. "We're going from our first album 'Rocka Rolla' (1974) to our last 'Nostradamus' (2008).

"We're doing more than just the well known songs," he continued. "We're playing songs we haven't played live in years and some we've never plaved, like 'Blood Red Skies' (from 1988's 'Ram It Down') and 'Never Satisfied' (from 'Rocka Rolla'), for instance." But what has been dubbed "The Epitaph World Tour," is not really as "final" as fans think. "What we said is this is our last major world tour," Tipton said. "It takes 18 months to three years to do a global tour. We've been doing it for 40 years, so after this, we're done with tours of this scale." That suggests shorter, smaller tours remain likely.

"If a string of dates were offered to the band that made sense to us, we'd certainly consider them," confirmed Tipton. "And we will certainly do another album together, and maybe even two, who knows." So like any major corporation in today's rocky economic world, the heavy metal machine that is Judas Priest is simply as Tipton puts it, "cutting back" but definitely not turning off the lights and going home. In fact, once the current run of U.S. dates wraps up in December, the group is taking a short break to recharge their batteries, before going to Asia for a several week run. Tipton said they are still penciling in additional dates and he expects a second leg of U.S.

shows to follow in the months ahead. "I honestly don't know," he said of just how long the current tour will continue, "but I expect it will be for quite a while longer." The band's longtime musical home, Columbia Records, via their Legacy label, has just released two impressive career-encompassing pieces of product for Priest to promote while on their extended globe -hopping trek. "The Chosen Few" is a 17-song collection of Priest songs hand-picked by the group's heavy metal peers, including: Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Alice Cooper, Geoff Tate of Queensryche, Kerry King of Slayer, Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, Ozzy Osbourne and many others. A second collection "Single Cuts" is a boxed set of 20 discs featuring all of Judas Priest's UK-released 7-inch and 12-inch A- and B-sides from 1977 through 1992. A total of 52 songs in all, housed in a wallet featuring the original artwork and track-by-track notes from writer Geoff Barton, founder of the international heavy metal magazine, "Kerrang!" For your information "American Pop" presented by South Shore Arts and organized by University of Colorado Boulder Art Museum including the works of Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Red Grooms, James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, Jim Dine, Ed Ruscha, Claes Oldenburg, Wayne Thiebaud, and H.C.

McClelland said pop art was the visual art movement that emerged in the 1950s in Britain and the United States, but really took hold in the United States during the 1960s. "Pop art challenged artistic traditions while commenting on American consumer culture," she said. "The economic boom of post -World War II America lead to a society overwhelmed with material objects and advertisements prompting a desire to consume incessantly." McClelland said televisions in the American middle-class home denned the era by broadcasting not only shows and advertisements, but also images and footage of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement and the countercul-tural revolution. "These are the men and women of the art world who help change the perceptions of what art is defined to be," she said.

"Pop artists drew on all aspects of the mass media, altering or appropriating images as a means of cultural critique. They looked at ordinary and mundane subject matter such as shop signs, road signs, comics and cartoons, packaging, and mass media imagery, with a sense of irreverence and humor." She said it's these "artistic views" that "monumentalized the material details that mirror the dynamic of American life so well." CONTINUED FROM PAGE Dl Pop art is sharing the spotlight with a selection of his contemporaries for a new exhibit opening Tuesday at the Munster venue called "American Pop," which runs until Jan. 29. The exhibit loan of more than 50 pieces was organized by University of Colorado Boulder Art Museum. "While Warhol is a name that is so associated with New York, what I love about this new exhibit is that so many of the other artists also have a connection to Indiana and the region," McClelland said.

"It's great that we have Warhol and also Roy Lichtenstein's panel pieces as some of the works featured, but the roster of other artists and their influences are just as fascinating." Here's McClelland's "connect the dots" explanation of each of the artists' association with Indiana and Chicagoland. John Baeder was born in South Bend. Mike Bidlo was born in Chicago in 1953 and studied at the University of Illinois for a BA in 1973 and at Southern Illinois University for a MFA in 1975. Red Grooms-studied at The School of the Art Institute, Chicago in the late 1950s Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Ind. and from 1949 to 1953 attended the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

Gladys Nilsson was born in Chicago, where she has lived and worked for most of her life. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 1962. She and her husband, artist Jim Nutt, were also part of the "Hairy Who" group of artists who exhibited at the Hyde Park Art Center in the late 1960s. Claes Oldenburg was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and moved to Chicago in 1936 and then worked as an apprentice reporter at the Chicago City News Bureau and studied at The Art Institute of Chicago in the 1950s. James Rosenquist attended The School of the Art Institute in Chicago in the 1950s.

H.C. Westermann attended The School of the Art Institute Chicago in the late 1940s to the early 1950s. Other artists also featured include Jim Dine, Ed Ruscha and Wayne Thiebaud.
