Corbin Times-Tribune, Wednesday, December 1, Baker Fires Corbin Redhounds Over Whitley County Colonels The Corbin Redhounds with returning starter in the 'line-up won a convincing opening game over the favored -Whitley County Colonels 54-58 on the losers floor last night In the Junior Varisty game Corbin took and early lead and held oh for a 49-39 win over the -'JV'S of Whitley County. Led by sharp shooting of veteran Jerry Baker who '-finished with 28 points the Redhounds played the Colonels on even terms throughout the game and pulled out to the final margin in the final minute of Corbin won despite being handicapped due to only one days practice for five of the players who dressed. They were members of the state champion football team and started basketball practice only Monday. Whitley County started fast and was on the verge of blowing the game wide open early. They held a 21-16 margin by the end of the first period the Redhounds rallied to He the count at 36-36 at halftone.

The two teams were stall deadlocked at 46-46 starting the final quarter of play. The game was tied 12 tunes and the lead changed hands six times and was well played for an opener for both teams. Corbin committed only nine turnovers during the game with Whitley County losing the ball 12 times on mis-cues. Jerry Baker tossed in 10 field goals arid eight free throws for the Redhounds with Dallas Coins making his as a varsity player with seven from the field and a charity toss for 15 points. Ronnie Maraee was the big gun for Whitley County with 19 points on eight from the field and three free throws followed by John Taylor with 12.

The Redbounds hit only 12 of 40 from the field in the first half for 30 per cent and seven of 21 in the second half for 33 per cent. They ended the game with 31 per cent on 19 of 61. On the other hand they pulled in 24 rebounds in the first half against a taller team and 26 in the second half for a game total of 49. Whitley County connected on 12 of 27 in the first half for 44 per cent arid nine of 29 in the second half for 31 per cent. This gave them 21 of 96 for 3D per cent during the game.

The Colonels had 17 rebounds in the first half and' 19 In the second half for a game total of 36. The Redhounds open their home schedule Friday night against Marian at QilUam Gym. In the Junior Varsity game Corbin was on top by at the end of the first period and 26-13 at halftmw. They tod 39-29 starting the final quarter 'of play. Brent Freeman, with only one days practice, led the Corbin JV'S with 14 points on five from the field and four free throws.

Wilson of Whitley County had the same total but got his on seven field goals.
