As a leading pit boss, he had his pick of casinos about it and told him about working on the ships, etc. But he said if he ever heard of me gambling with any of the patients he'd have me court-martialed. I gambled in the Army but never with any of the patients. I knew better." When he was discharged from the Army, he returned to work in Las Vegas for one of his former Long Beach buddies, Marion Hicks, who owned two of the gambling ships on which he learned the meaning of green felt. From then it was all up. He was a dealer at the El Cortez Hotel and at the Savoy Club and then took a job considered "key" in all casinos--pit boss--at the El Rancho, Flamingo Hotel, Cal-Neva Lodge, and the Thunderbird Hotel, all in Las Vegas, and at the Cal-Neva Club in Reno and the Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe. As one of the gambling state's leading pit bosses, he had his pick of the best casinos: "The Cal-Neva Lodge in those days was the epitome of gaming--it had a lot of clientele in tuxedos and long dresses. It was the 'in' place as far as the wealthy people were concerned. I became club manager for both places, spending the winters in Reno and the summers at Lake Tahoe." But in 1949, Boyd admits, "They had a real cold winter" and he returned to Las Vegas. "Al Winter, who owned the Club Bingo and was building the Sahara Hotel asked me if I would be a partner in it. I had worked for him in Portland, Ore., running a bingo game in between some of these other jobs. "I said I had a good job and was making good money, but he wanted me to be a partner so he put up the money for me," Boyd admits frankly. As a partner Boyd set up the casino's "cage procedure" -- a procedure, Boyd admits, which "bugs" the Internal Revenue Service and has been copied by big corporations. "There's nothing wrong with the way we handle it, but in the beginning none of us knew anything about keeping books so Catherine Cowan, Jim West and 1,30 years ago, set up this system of cage credits and debits. It works and a lot of big corporations have adopted our system just because they don't Our"more power to father"gifts a Powerful 7'/4" Circular Saw. Big !'/«" HP motor handles any size job.
