Limes Major-League Baseball C-4 Sunday, July 7, 1991 ed Sox survive scare in victory xia I x-, AP Laserphoto Boston and Detroit players scuffle on the pitcher's mound during Saturday's game. Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens (on the ground center), hit John Shelby to ignite the brawl. Robinson shuts down Padres By The Associated Press BOSTON It was a scary moment for the Boston Red Sox, an angry .177 hitter charging the mound with bat in hand. Standing on that mound, All-Star Roger Gemens. But catcher John Marzano came to Clemens' defense by tackling Detroit's John Shelby from behind before all three were buried in a three-man pileup during a nasty bench-clearing melee on Saturday.

Shelby was all bent out of shape because he was hit by a pitch in the second inning after consecutive homers by Pete Incaviglia and Rob Deer. After bodies were untangled and peace restored without any punches thrown, Shelby was ejected. Clemens stayed and shut down the Tigers the rest of the way. Clemens, headed for Tuesday's All-Star game with an 11-5 record, settled down after being warned in Detroit's four-run second and earned a 7-4 victory over the Tigers with ninth-inning help from Jeff Reardon. Reardon recorded his 21st save of the season and No.

308 of his career, moving past Goose Gossage into second place on the all-time list. "It seems like they get tougher and tougher, but this one was a real struggle," Clemens said after giving up 11 hits, striking out nine and walking two. "After the home runs, Shelby hit the first pitch to him foul to left," Clemens said. "It was a fastball three or four pitches outside that he went out and got. Then I came inside with a fastball.

I thought he was going to get out of the way, but it hit him in the back. "The next thing I knew he was on his way to the mound with the bat in his hand. There wasn't much I could do except hold my ground. Then Marzie kind of bulldogged him from behind, like we do in Texas. "Everybody then began scuffing around and I was on the bottom of the pile.

When it was all over, I went over to him (Shelby) and told him I had to pitch inside because I've been leaving too many balls out over the plate." N.Y. Yankees 13 Baltimore 5 NEW YORK Matt Nokes hit two homers and drove in six runs as the Yankees rallied to beat the Orioles for their seventh win in eight games. For Nokes, who was left off the American League All-Star team at Hrbek Continued from Page 1 The loss dropped the White Sox 3 12 behind the Twins in the AL West race and was the second time in six meetings the Twins have defeated the Sox. "They deserve a lot of credit," Torborg said. "That was a long way for them to come back.

I guess that's one of the reasons they're leading the division." Rookie righthander Ramon Garcia once again came away without a victory despite allowing just three hits in 6 23 innings. He was lifted following Harper's homer in the seventh after allowing jast one hit through the first six innings and retiring 13 straight before Randy Bush led off the seventh with a single. "No luck," Garcia said. "I try to do the best I can do. Next time I'll try the same thing and do the best I can do." Garcia, winless in three decisions, pitched into the seventh inning for the fifth time in eight starts.

American League catcher, it tied a career high for RBI in a game. He also drove in six runs on Sept. 26, 1987 at Toronto while with Detroit. Baltimore led 5-3 in the sixth inning when Nokes hit a two-run homer off starter Ben McDonald. Steve Sax, who had four of New York's 13 hits, capped the three-run inning with an RBI-single off reliever Todd Frohwirth (2-2).

Nokes had a sacrifice in the seventh and added a three-run homer in a six-run eighth inning. For the season, Nokes has 13 homers and 43 RBI. Eric Plunk (2-2), who relieved starter Scott Sanderson in the sixth, was the winner despite getting only two outs. Steve Howe pitched two innings and Steve Farr finished. New York took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Don Mattingly's sacrifice fly and a two-run homer by Mel Hall, his 13th.

Baltimore tied the score in the fourth on Chito Martinez's RBI-single and a two-run single by Bob Melvin. Cleveland 2 Milwaukee 0 CLEVELAND -Greg Swindell gave up two hits in seven innings as the Indians beat the Brewers to give Mike Hargrove a victory in his first game as manager. Hargrove was promoted from first base coach earlier in the day, replacing fired John McNamara. The Indians had baseball's worst record, 25-52, under McNamara. The victory was only the second in 10 games for the Indians, but it was the sixth straight time they've responded with a win following an in-season managerial change.

Milwaukee has lost seven of its last eight. Texas 4 California 3 ARLINGTON, Texas Ivan Rodriguez provided the go-ahead runs with a sixth-inning single as the Rangers took advantage of an error by pitcher Jim Abbott to beat the Angels. Abbott took a 3-1 lead into the sixth but gave up a leadoff single to Juan Gonzalez and hit Steve Buechele. Abbott fielded Mike Stanley's bunt and had Gonzalez out at third but threw the ball over Gary Gaetti's head, and Gonzalez scored. Rodriguez hit Abbott's next pitch down the third-base line for a two-run double and a 4-3 lead.

"He pitched super," Torborg said. "He did a terrific job." The White Sox used home runs by Frank Thomas and Robin Ventura to take a 4-0 lead after five innings. Thomas hit a solo shot into right-centerfield leading off the fifth and Ventura hit his second three-run homer in as many nights in the fifth. But the late-inning heroics this time belonged to the Twins. NOTES The home run by Thomas off Minnesota starter Paul Abbott was the first given up by the righthander in 63 23 innings Ventura's home run was the sixth of the season, allowing him to surpass his career high of five last year the White Sox have hit 20 homers in the last 16 games after just 36 in the first 63 Warren Newson, with a pinch-hit single in the ninth, is batting .444 as a pinch-hitter.

He also recorded his first career stolen base in the ninth Kir-by Puckett broke an 0-for-18 streak with his eighth-inning single before Hrbek's homer. scored twice before getting a hit, and Mark Gardner and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Expos handed the Pirates their third straight loss. Pittsburgh's loss and New York's victory over Philadelphia sliced the Pirates' lead in the National League East to 2 12 games for the first time since May 26. N.Y. Mets 2 Philadelphia 1 PHILADELPHIA Frank Viola allowed five hits in 8 23 innings, and Hubie Brooks homered as the Mets defeated the hapless Phillies for their sixth straight victory-Viola (10-5) struck out three and walked three in his third straight victory.

John Franco allowed an RBI single to Jim Lindeman before fanning pinch-hitter Ron Jones for the final out with the winning run on base to get his 19th save. Dale Murphy went 4-for-4. Houston 3 Cincinnati 0 HOUSTON Jimmy Jones pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout in four seasons, and Ken Caminiti hit a two-run homer as the Astros beat the Reds. Jones (5-5) had his first shutout since August 10, 1987 and his first complete game since August 11. Dawson, Bielecki key Cubs ST.

LOUIS (AP) Mike Bielecki pitched eight strong innings and drove in two runs, and Andre Dawson had three hits and three RBI as the Chicago Cubs beat the St Louis Cardinals 12-2 Saturday night. Bielecki (9-6) pitched 6 13 hit-less innings, losing his bid for a no-hitter on Pedro Guerrero's two-run homer. After allowing just three hits over eight innings in 97-degree heat, Bielecki was relieved to start the ninth. Dawson hit a two-run homer, his 14th, and a run-scoring double to lead Chicago's 13-hit attack. The Cubs hammered five Cardinal relievers for 10 hits and nine runs in three innings.

Starter Bryn Smith (7-5) saw the Cardinals the National League's top fielding team -make three errors to bring their total for the last four games to eight. Bielecki struck out four and walked two in his first appearance since June 28th and first start since June 10, when he allowed nine hits and six runs in a 13-5 loss to Los Angeles. He was scratched from a scheduled start Tuesday because of a strained right elbow. After Dawson and George Bell singled and Smith intentionally walked Doug Dascenzo to load the bases with two outs in the third, Smith walked Bielecki to force in a run. Then Chico Walker hit a hard shot under first baseman Guerrero's glove for an error, allowing two more runs to score.

Guerrero later committed another error, and third baseman Todd Zeile also made one. Zeile has four errors in the last four games. The Cubs made it 4-0 in the seventh off reliever Scott Terry on singles by Shawon Dunston and Dascenzo and a run-scoring groundout by Bielecki. Bielecki set down 17 batters in a row before walking Ozzie Smith in the seventh. With one out, Guerrero hit a 2-1 pitch for his seventh home run.

The Cubs added three runs in the eighth. Dawson hit his homer off Juan Agosto. Jerome Walton followed with a double and Dunston a run-scoring double off Cris Carpenter. Chicago had five straight hits and a wild pitch before St. Louis got an out in a five-run ninth.

Walton had a two-run double, and Sandberg and Dawson run-scoring hits in the inning. with the third-best record in baseball but finished nine games behind the American League champion Oakland A's. It'll be interesting to see what happens the rest of the way. The White Sox have to keep it all together the rest of the way like they did last year after taking a 48-30 record into the second half of the season. There's no reason to believe otherwise unless they suffer a major injury to one of their key players, like Thomas.

At least they should be able to keep Chicago's avid sports fans content the rest of the summer. They couldn't have said that two weeks ago. Mitchuson, who pitched a no-hitter and lost against Crown Point I in his last outing on June 29, struck out 14 and walked only four. Schererville's Bob Early was the loser as Griffith scored the only run it would need in the fifth inning on a wild pitch, and added three more in the sixth to seal the victory. 1 WP Bobby. LP Foster. By The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO -Sometimes, it hurts just to watch Don Robinson pitch. So imagine how he must feel. That's why his performance on Saturday against the San Diego Padres is nothing short of remarkable.

1 The injury-riddled Robinson gave up one run and two hits in 8 23 innings as the San Francisco Giants beat the Padres 4-1. "You can't pitch any better than Robinson did," Giants manager Roger Craig said. "He's a tremendous competitor. He just battled and battled. He came up to me Saturday and told me he was going to win." Robinson carried a one-hitter into the ninth when he walked Thomas Howard and Tony Gwynn singled with two outs to bring on Dave Righetti.

Righetti retired Fred McGriff on a deep fly to complete the combined two-hitter and earn his 11th save. Robinson (4-6) did not allow a hit until Benito Santiago homered with one out in the fifth to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. It was Santiago's third homer in 15 at-bats, and his 10th of the season. "I told Roger I'd win this game," Robinson said Brow Continued from Page 1 Ventura followed with a three-run homer in the seventh and the defense, including a diving stop by shortstop Ozzie Guillen to start a double play in the ninth, and relief pitching locked up the victory. "That's just the way it's been going for us," White Sox manager Jeff Torborg said.

"We get good pitching and then somebody comes up with a big hit." Ventura has been one of the major reasons for the turnaround. He hit .312 in June and took a .282 average into Saturday's game, hitting safely in 10 of the last 12 games with six multi-hit games. Lance Johnson has hit safely in Summer Baseball National League "Houston beat us bad in three straight games and San Diego beat us Friday, so I told Roger he had nothing to worry about. I felt a win was really necessary today. I thought the team needed a lift and I wanted to provide it." Following Santiago's homer, Robinson retired 12 straight before walking Howard with one out in the ninth.

Robinson struck out seven and walked four. It was a gutty effort for the 34-year-old Robinson, who has been troubled by knee and shoulder injuries the last few seasons. He has appeared in 21 games this season, starting 11. Robinson said that he didn't have his best stuff, and Padres manager Greg Riddoch agreed. "Part of it was what we were doing to help him," Riddoch said of Robinson.

"We swung at bad pitches. We weren't too selective." Robby Thompson drove in two runs for San Francisco with a home run and a tie-breaking single in the seventh inning. Montreal 2 Pittsburgh 1 PITTSBURGH Montreal 10 of the last 11 games and 19 of the last 21, Pasqua has hit safely in seven of the last eight games with two doubles, two triples, two home runs and seven RBI and Tim Raines hit .289 in June with 10 steals and 14 RBI. And Thomas has been steady all season. The second-year first basemandesignated hitter, who leads the major leagues in walks with 70 and is fourth in the American League in RBI with 57, has reached base in 74 of 78 games for the White Sox and hit .280 in June with five homers, 20 RBI and 24 walks.

Another reason for the turnaround is the fact the White Sox have been hitting the ball out Stephens had five RBI for the game while Dan Penn and Jeff Kra-marzewski also had three hits for Cedar Lake. Ryan Stoykovich and Craig Szasz paced Hammond with two hits each. One third of their homers have come in the last 15 games. And let's not forget the White Sox don't go down without a fight and know now to win close games. They have won 19 games in their final at-bat and are 27-17 in games decided by two runs or less, including 19-9 in one-run games. There have been plenty of other reasons for the recent White Sox success.

But the combination of the pitching, hitting and defense is how pennants are won. Does the White Sox formula for victory sound familiar?
