Bill Overmyer, former Fremont St. Joseph's High School football real tough but the mental pressure of learning a new position (linebacker) and having to beat someone out every day is really something," said the rookie, a 14th round draft choice. star and Ail-American defensive tackle at Ashland College, isn't as impressed with the professional football talent as he is with the Overmyer admitted that "I'm Rossovich (an Eagles' star who is bargaining for more money) shows up, that's another one to contend with." Other challengers at middle linebacker are Ike Kelley of Ohio State University who has been in the pros several years, as has Bill Cody of Auburn.

Eastern Michigan University's will Foster, an eighth-round draft choice, is also in contention. Overmyer said, "I have never played linebacker before so making the adjustments is hard. I am doing okay against the pass great mental pressure facing him worried about the first cut which aiier two and a half weeks in the is coming ud soon." He went on. "There are more linebackers in camp than any other position. There are 13 here and four of them are middle linebackers, the position I am playing.

Norman resigned the Heidelberg position at the close of the 1971-72 cage season. At Perkins he will succeed Milt Levy, who moved up to the assistant principal's position.

Tom a Sanduskian, was hired as athletic director, but after only a few days rejected the position. Norman and his family live at 820 Barker Road, but will be moving into a new home in the Perkins district. Norman's wife, Joyce, was hired also by the Perkins board last night to teach sixth grade. The Perkins board said salary paid Norman will be $13,400 while Mrs. Norman will receive $10,800.

III Chipping Up ByDONFOGLESON News-Messenger Staff Writer And the walls came tumbling down. Such may be the case if Mrs. Dorothy (Dot) Szakovits calls it quits after 21 years as proprietor of Fremont Speedway. It was made public last week that Mrs. Szakovits has filed a request with the Sandusky County Agricultural Society, owner of the speedway, to sell the operation.

The unfortunate move culminates a continuing battle during the past two months between Mrs. Szakovits and some dissident drivers over purses being offered at the speedway. Mrs. Szakovits is once again boasting top dirt track attractions, but the fans have failed to support her. Now, facing financial loss, the speedway proprietor is seriously offering to sell her rights to the track.

FOGLESON In Tourney John Hutchings, Chris Collier, Jenny Goszyk and Greg Harrison were winners Wednesday afternoon in a tennis tournament at Rodger Young Park for those who completed the Fremont Tennis Club's summer classes. Hutchings defeated Jeff Strayer, 6-0, to win the Boys 12-15 age bracket title; Miss Collier beat Sandy Dierksheide, 6-1, to nab the Girls 14-15 age group trophy; Miss Goszyk won over Cindy Michaels, 6-1, in the finals of the Girls 12-13 age bracket; and young Harrison edged David Dorsky, 6-3, to take the title in the Boys 10-11 age group. Each class winner received a trophy for his or her efforts while each runnerup was the recipient of a carton of tennis balls. Fremont American Legion traveling baseball team won its 30th game of the year Wednesday, defeating Bernie's Market of Toledo, 10-3, at Toledo University.

The game was halted after six innings. Al Davis, John Barrington and Dan Baker each smacked two hits to pace the Fremonters eight-hit attack. The winners put the game out of reach early, exploding for seven runs with the help of five walks in the first inning. A single by Ladd Beck and doubles by Davis and Barrington were the only hits of the big first inning for the Fremont nine. Jeff Little blanked the Toledoans for four innings before Jim Fausey came on to pitch the rest of the game.

Little fanned nine men and gave up just three hits in the four innings he pitched. The victory gave the Fremonters a 30-17 record for the season. State tournament action begins at Ashland College Monday. its. c' with out zone average but I'm having trouble picking up the keys when those experienced linemen come at you, a rookie is in trouble.

Also, I don't get as much work as I require since we have so many linebackers here. One thing, the coaches keep talking to me so I know I have a chance." Overmyer has gotten in some good knocks, including in the Eagles' victory over Washington in a rookies' scrimmage. He also played well in Philly's 12-G loss to the Redskins in a "varsity" scrimmage. He continued, "Practices aren't that tough. .1 was in pretty good shape when I reported.

I understand that they are teaching me on defense but experience is the major difference; however, the other rookies who have played linebacker are having trouble adjusting too. "I am just as well prepared as those rookies from major-universities. One thing I am working hard for is making the specialty team, which can help keep me up here." Overmyer added that ex-Ashland College star Len Pettigrew, in his second -year with the Eagles, is doing a fine job at outside linebacker. "Len's knee is coming around pretty good; we're both in the same boat due to all the linebackers here." Other ramblings by Overmyer: "The food is great and the camp is well run my weight is staying up at 227 pounds now; I played at 207 most of last year at Ashland my speed is a little better than average up here for linebackers the veterans pick on the rookies, especially at dinner everyone has been on edge when the temperatures were in the high 90's this would be a great life if I can make it; we're always signing autographs and everyone is on your side. Overmyer concluded, "One of the scarey things here is that you wake up in the morning and your roommate is not there anymore.

My roomie (a rookie from South Carolina University) was cut; he was gone when I woke up. I'm holding my breath I want to get past those cuts." Pat Belch was the winning pitcher. The game was called in the sixth inning because of the 10-run margin rule. In the loss, the roof fell in on White's in the fourth inning. The Knights of Columbus exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to move from a one-run deficit to a seven-run lead. Jack Wetzel and Mike Shannon each had two hits and Scott Heschell had a home run for the Knights.

All that might be needed is a well-organized promotion campaign to get fans back out to the track. The drivers now spending their Saturday nights at the local oval are exciting enough. If the big name drivers don't want to race here, then let it be.

Some good competitive races, with the proper publicity behind them, will attract the race fans. As we see it, both sides have reasonable grievances. So, unless an agreement can be reached, Mrs. Szakovits and the dissenters should bid sweet goodbyes forever. Everyone has been hurt by the boycott.

But Mrs. Szakovits, the drivers and, most important, the fans should not allow the local oval to be buried. It could very well happen should Mrs. Szakovits sell out. The speedway proprietor said last week that she thought "new blood" in the track operation might revive it.

That could, be true. But, with 21 years of experience behind her, no one should know more about reviving a race track than Mrs. Szakovits. Should the speedway fold, it would bring to an end the only professional live sport this town has. We don't believe the fans will allow it.

There are at least seven more race nights at Fremont Speedway this season. Seven more times to support YOUR race track. With auto racing growing at such a fast rate throughout the country, we can't believe that Fremont race fans will allow "the track that action built" to choke itself to death. MOHAWK ACTION Fred Linder, Harold McGilton and Al Franks tore up the track last weekend at Mohawk Speedway in McCutchenville by taking easy victories in the super-sprint feature, pursuit and dash, respectively. Linder also captured the first place prize in the fast car first heat.

Linder out-dueled Franks and Jerry Nemire in the feature after whipping Bob Pickens and Nemire in the first heat. In the pursuit event, Franks finished runnerup to McGilton and Nemire was third. Following Franks to the line in the dash were Keegan and Nemire. Art Ball sped to victory in both the late-model first heat and dash but was a distant seventh to winner Dan Keegan in the feature event. Don Terry was second in the feature and Lin Potter was third.

The second heat win belonged to Roger Burkett while Don McDonnell took home the third heat prize. In the late-model consolation chase, McDonnell was tops and Bob Godfried second. Racing action in both the late model and super spring divisions resumes this Friday at Mohawk Speedway. Like Fremont Speedway, Mohawk has fallen upon hard times and the operators are looking for fan support. One source told The News-Messenger this week that unless things look up, this could be the track's last week of racing.

SUMMER NATIONALS Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio, will stage its most prestigious drag event of the season on Aug. 18, 19 and 20 when the International Hot Rod Association's $100,000 Summer Nationals takes place. The oil-spurting machines will be trying to smash records set by the top auto racers in the unlimited, pro-stock and fuel funny car divisions. Art Arfons holds the fastest mark in the unlimited division with a record book clocking of 6.10 seconds (282.12 miles per hour). The pro-stock mark belongs to veteran Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, at 146.81 miles per hour, and Mike Fons, with a 9.55 seconds time.

Tom McEwen logged the quickest time in the fuel funny cars class (6.49 second) while Don Prudhomme boasts the record in miles per hour at 223.80. The world's finest two-seater sports-racing cars moved into the Mansfield area this week for the 10th annual Buckeye Cup Canadian-American Challenge Race at the Mid-Ohio sports Car Course Saturday and Sunday. Officials at Mid-Ohio are expecting the Buckeye State's largest racing crowd ever. Advance ticket sales for this weekend's racing has surpassed the total 1971 Can-Am advance sale by 10 days prior to the race. The 1971 Buckeye Cup race was the largest paid crowd in Mid-Ohio history.
