i QUAD-CITY TIMES Thursday, Oct 11, 1979 27 Distance running titles up for grabs bly a good course for her, By Craig Cooper of the.TlnM It's pretty flat." Cross country will probably never compete with football for top billing on crisp, fall Saturdays but the sport cause they beat us and they'll be running on their home course," Prussman added. "In a big meet, it all depends on how a team is running. "It takes all five runners to win a big meet and Clinton has an advantage because their kids' run in a group. They come in in a cluster." leives his best times are yet to come. "He ran the 10:22 on our course and it's a hillier course than most We haven't run at Clinton this year but it's a flat course and he should be somewhere under 10 minutes.

"If everyone peaks at the right time, I'm confident that we can do very well Saturday and the rest of the IN THE Muscatine Invi-' season." tationaL the River Kings took 4th place, 6th, 7th, 8th Besides Resh, Wellerding has been winning with Lynn Russell, Sarah Howes, JoAnn Hammann and Julie Griffin. Howes is the only senior besides Resh. "Russell has been one of our top runners except that she got off to a bad start. She had hayfever so bad that she was out of school 2 for a week and out of action for 3 Wellerding -added. "She has come back strong though." WELLERDING believes I that Resh's toughest com-J petition for individual ho- nors will be Cindy Spring man of Muscatine and Sherry Thompson of Clinton with Davenport West run-S ners Lynn Davis and Dawn I Kuehn looming as darkhor- ses.

The Bettendorf coach; also said that Clinton and West could be in the thick of the team fight. The sophomore girls will take off first Saturday at 10: 30 a.m. and will be followed by the sophomore boys, var- sity girls and finally, the' varsity boys. and 9th. "It makes a lot of difference in meets like this when you have a team that can stick together and finish high." Muscatine has been paced this season by senior Mike Allbee, a 15th-place finisher in the '78 state meet.

When lit -SsT. A I I -5 I I BETTENDORF HAS a seemingly endless supply of talented female athletes and this year is no exception. Senior Leann Resh, also a top basketball player and track star, provides the leadership for the young Bulldog team that includes just one other senior, Iwo juniors and a sophomore. The only time Resh finished lower than first this fall was in the Geneseo Invitational against a strong field. "She already holds the Clinton course record of 11: 52 so she should have a good chance if everything goes well," Bulldog coach John Wellerding said.

"It's proba sure beats the heck out of raking the yard. Area sports fans that decide to let the leaves blow Into the neighbor's yard should think about making a trip to Clinton Saturday morning There will be no bands, cheerleaders, tailgate parties or even any bleachers at Erickson Center. The only thing the Mississippi Eight Conference cross-country coaches are promising is some fine distance running. The Muscatine boys and Bettendorf girls ran away with honors last year In the first Mississippi Eight Con-" ference meet and it would not be a big surprise if both repeated this year. MUSCATINE LOST its top runner Tony Shella-barger from the 1978 state championship team but the loss hasnt been particularly noticeable.

The Muskies have been untouchable in dual meets this season and are riding a string of 21-straight victories. "Nobody has really threatened us in duels, but we've been beaten twice in Invitationals," new coach Noel Prussman said. One of the invitational losses came in the Muscatine Invitational when Clinton beat the Muskies. With that in mind, Prussman thinks Clinton will be the team to beat. "Clinton would have to be considered the favorites be (i Drake's Kreklow waived BOSTON AP) The Boston Celtics trimmed their roster to the 11-man maximum Wednesday by cutting three guards, including former Drake standout Wayne Kreklow and National Basketball Association veteran Kevin Stacom.
