New Firm Sells 'Peace of Mind' to Fearful Credit Card Holders Continued from Page 1 lowing tip-offs that their cards were "available" at prices of from $20-825 each.

One company paid $1500 to get back 69 of its "hot" credit cards: the. payoff was made by money order and the cards were delivered by bus. MOST cardholders, oddly enough, are unaware of the'fact that they are gaily responsible for all made with their cards until the card issuer has received written hotifi- cation of the loss. This could take several especiaUy for people witlrlots of cards (a dozen cards means a dozen let, ters), and even then they can still be held responsible if they've been negligent in caring, for the cards. McKay's a Credit Card Sentinel was launched a year- ago after co-founder Frank Curcio and Sheldon Kasower shared the same bitter experience.

Both were stuck with heavy bills following theft of their credit cards. AS A result, the Sentinel organization was set up with headquarters in Century City to provide all the facilities and services essential to prevent similar losses from happening to other unwary cardholders. Now the company has offices in New York, San Francisco, Los San Diego, and 'Long Beach, with new facilities soon to start up in Chicago, Las Vegas, Columbus, San Antonio and Portland. The key to this success, says McKay, is simplicity. For a $5 annual fee, cardholders list all their credit cards, Blue Cross, auto club memberships, etc- on a special registration form.

This information is then transcribed and-stored in a computer data bank! at company headquarters. CARDHOLDERS receive a special credit card kit," including special stickers with Sentinel's 24-hour phone number, to be affixed to the telephone at home or office ensuring that the number be immediately available in an emergency. When card becomes lost or stolen, the cardholder simply calls the Sentinel number from anywhere in world al any time of the day or night, says McKay) and informs the operator of loss. Within seconds, the details of the card are retrieved from the data bank and cancellation instructions are rushed by teletype to all the issuing companies, with simulta neous instructions for im mediate reissue. These instructions applj to all cards identified on the original registration and include club, hbspitali- zation and Social Security cards, as well as the regular credit cards.
