(UPI) Oklahoma football players said all along they would be hard for anyone to stop if they didn't stop themselves with fumbles and penalties. With the national television cameras on them Saturday and a bowl appearance at stake, the Sooners fumbled away the ball only once and had only 25 yards in penalties. The result was 478 yards of offense and a 52-14 runaway over Colorado, assuring the third-ranked Sooners of at least a tie for the Big Bright Conference championship.

Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer, holding oranges in both hands, said, "That's what we were playing for. We haven't lost yet on television, have we?" Oklahoma plays Nebraska Nov. 25 in another nationally televised game which will decide the Big Eight's representative in the Orange Bowl. Mizzou Ropes Cowboys Akron Kips W. Illinois AKRON, Ohio (UPI) Fullback Mark Hovanec gained 97 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Akron to a 42-7 romp over Western Illinois Saturday night.

Akron, which closed out its season at 6-4-1, shutdown the Western offense throughout the which dropped to 3-7, was led by Greg Law-son with 32 yards in 10 car-. ries. Western's lone score -came on a 10-yard pass from Eiff Fullmer to Jerry Holloway. Iowa State linebacker Mark Settle Intercepts a pass from Kansas State quarterback Wendell llendrickson on the 35 yard line. The Intended receiver, fullback Roosevelt Duncan, moves in for the tackle.

Missouri failed to get a first down, and Brockhaus kicked a 42-yard field goal. Missouri punted, and on the next play Miller scampered 69 yards to the Missouri 14. Four plays later he scored from the seven. Oklahoma opened the second half with a 14-play march that ate up six minutes and ended with Miller's two-yard plunge into the end zone.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (UPI) Missouri freshman quarterback Phil Bradley ran for two touchdowns and passed for 88 yards Saturday to lead the Tigers to a 41-14 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Tigers won despite giving up 246 yards and two touchdowns to Ileis-man Trophy candidate Terry Miller. The rushing total was an OSU record for one game. Miller's previous career high of 228 yards was set last year against Missouri.

After going scoreless in the third quarter and allowing Oklahoma State to take a 14-10 lead, Missouri scored three touchdowns in less than three minutes in the fourth quarter. Bradley, playing for injured Pete Woods, plunged one yard on the first of his touchdowns and scam pered through the Oklahoma State defenders for 24 yards on the second. Between those scores, Tiger defensive end Steve Hamilton Intercepted a pitch from OSU quarterback Randy Stephenson at the Cowboy 20-yard line and ran it to the end zone. Two minutes later, Jeff Brockhaus kicked his second field goal to make it 34-14. With 39 seconds remaining in the game, Tiger tailback Dean Leibson carried it in from the two-yard line for the Tigers' fifth touchdown.

After a scoreless first quarter, Tiger fullback An-nise Davis ran in from the five-yard line for a touchdown at the start of the second quarter. (UPI) Curtis Craig scored on runs of 12 and five yards to help lOth-ranked Nebraska to a 52-7 Big Eight victory over Kansas Saturday. Craig, alternating with I.M.

Hipp, collected 54 yards on just six carries. The former Davenport Central prep helped the Cornhuskers to a team-record 556 rushing yards with his longest carry of the day, a 21-yarder. His 12-yard TD scamper put the first points on the board. The ground total, broke the mark of 523 yards set in 1954 against Hawaii. Richard Herns notched three touchdowns for Nebraska.

THE CYCLONES restored the nine-point cushion with 40 seconds left in the half on Rubley's pass to Hixom in a fourth-and-15 situation to climax an 80-yard drive. Curry's touchdown boosted the lead to 22-7, but Kansas State drove 80 yards in the final minutes with Ray Butler scoring' the final touchdown on a one-yard run. llenrikson hit Paul Coff-man with a two-point conversion to account for the final seven point margin. Scott Kollman got Iowa State on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a 20-yard field goal. Green carried the ball 31 times in upping his season total to 1,055 on the year making him just the fifth back In Big Eight history to rush for 1,000 yards two straight seasons.

Billy Todd stretched Nebraska's lead to 31-0 with a 58-yard field goal before Craig notched his second six-pointer on a five-yard run in the third quarter. Substitute quarterback Eddie Burns chipped in with a three-yard touchdown run, and Byron Slew-art had a three-yard run for the other Nebraska touchdowns.

Todd's long field goal was his 12th of the season, setting a Nebraska record and also giving him a tie for the school record on field goal distance. WHILE the flashy Hipp failed to score, he had 'his third game of the season with at least 200 yards rushing and ran his season total to 1,268 with the Nov. 25 confrontation with Oklahoma remaining to pad the total. Hipp wracked up an even 200 yards Saturday, 161 of them on 17 carries in the first half. Kansas never came close to scoring until It put together a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter.

War-dell Johnson got the touchdown on a three-yard run against the Nebraska substitutes. The win left Nebraska In position to fight for a share of the Big Eight title with Oklahoma, which Saturday assured itself no worse than a tie for the top spot. Ambrose varsity basketball team to an easy 118-89 victory over the Ambrose Alumni in an exhibition game played Saturday night at the Assumption High School gym. The Bees, who open their regular season in Lockport, 111. against Lewis University next Sa1-urday, led the alumni by a 69-36 score at the half. Steve Smithers, who prepped at Moline, had 26 points for the Ambrose team. Mark Nenninger led the alumni scorers wllh 16 points.

(UPI) Fullback George Scott ran 171 yards and scored two touchdowns and Mike Sochko booted two field goals Saturday as Maryland scored early and held on to beat Richmond, 27-24. The Terps, 6-4, built a 27-7 lead early in the second quarter and survived a Richmond comeback sparked by two blocked punts, one with four minutes left in the game.
