Nicklaus Comes From 5 Back To Lead by 2 By ALHAMNEK Times Sports Writer HAMMOND Sports bulletin: The United States Weather Bureau-7, Gavit High School's baseball team 1. Since their season opener April 7th, coach Norm Banas and his Gladiators have had seven of eight games rained out. Harry Volkman, shame on you. Most Region prep teams have played at least six times, whereas Gavit has been tested only once whipping Highland, 11-3. So until Mother Nature straightens out her act, Banas will grit his teeth and continue holding practice indoors.

"This is the wettest spring I can recall as baseball coach," declared the veteran of 11 campaigns. "This kind of layoff will hurt our timing, but most of the kids played summer ball and that experience should carry over." ODDLY ENOUGH, those persistent rains have yet to dent his team's optimism. "We're loaded with high-spirited juniors who are talented, listen well and extremely anxious to play," says Banas of his squad, which includes 10 lettermen and just one senior. Larry Vaznonis had three of Gavit's 11 hits against Highland. As a sophomore last spring, he batted a steady .300 to fin birdie putt on the last hole for a 70 and Heard took a 72.

Arnold Palmer finally broke par with a 70 but was well back in the field of 26 players who have collected regular tour titles in the last 12 months. He was at 218. Nicklaus, the recently crowned Masters champion and all-time leading money winner, didn't miss a green and three times successfully hacked his way out of the half-foot rough. But many of the rest of the elite field of winners had their problems. By BOB GREEN RANCHO LA COSTA, Calif.
