5B BOULDER, Colo. (UPI) Junior fullback James Mayberry sprinted for second half touchdown runs of seven and 17 yards Saturday to spark 14th-ranked Colorado to a 27-21 season-opening victory over Stanford. Mayberry, a 196-pounder from Amarillo, rushed for 152 yards in 27 carries. The young fullback, having his most productive game of his career, scored his first touchdown in the third quarter and clinched the game with his second in the fourth priod.

Colorado scored its first touchdown in the opening period when quarterback Jeff Knapple passed three yards to tight end Bob Ni-ziolek. Pete Dadiotis hit field goals of 25 and 37 yards to provide the Buffaloes with a 13-0 halftime lead. (L'PI) Quarterback Jack Thompson threw two touchdown passes and Paul Watson kicked a 35-yard field goal Saturday to lead Washington State to a 19-10 upset of lOth-ranked Nebraska. The Cougars battled the Cornhuskers to a scoreless standoff during the opening quarter before Thompson connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Brian Kelly midway through the second quarter to put Washington State ahead for the first time. Nebraska stormed back in the following three minutes to even the count with a 79-yard scoring drive, capped when Rick Berns, who finished the game with 153 yards in 26 carries, smashed his way to the goal on a 20-yard run. Thompson, rated one of the country's premier quarterbacks, completed 18 of 30 passes for 174 yards against the Huskers. He hooked up with Kelly again late in the third quarter to put Washington State ahead for good.

Nebraska had narrowed the margin to 14-10 on a 19-yard Billy Todd field goal before Watson countered with his three-pointer halfway through the final stanza. The Cougars put the game out of reach with a little more than six minutes remaining when Nebraska quarterback Randy Garcia was tackled in the Huskers' end zone for a safety. The Cougars capitalized on Frank Lockett's fumble of a punt on the Nebraska 25 to set up their first touchdown and helped themselves twice by forcing Nebraska fumbles, once at the Cougar 5-yard line on the game's opening rAN EXCEPTION "I GT.88 VssM I IMn. 01 Kl K.K.T. and Liiff''nnmnnmTffthJ I OK 'j STEEL BELT "Vs fX WYiuiMAtPtr i wijwi" .,1,1 III WaSI 14 32-IM 174 Neb 24 59-247 223 First Downs Rushes-vards Passings yards Return yards 4 61 Posses 30 IS 21-12-0 Kunrs 9.44 1-39 Fumb'es-lost n-fl 4-4 The lire with tin- heritajii' nf'prmen perforniiinre! 2 l'el hrll-.

(UPI) A swarming Texas defense caused two second-quarter fumbles and 270-pound fullback George Woodard converted each mistake into a touchdown Saturday to lead the eighth-ranked Aggies to a 28-14 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas, trailing 28-0, struck for third quarter touchdowns on a smoothly executed 80-yard pass from fullback Norris Banks to David Verser and on a 76-yard drive capped by Mike Higgins' two-yard run.

Woodard, a junior, scored three times in a span of 4 minutes of the second quarter on runs of 14, 1, and 49 yards. The big fullback rumbled for 150 rushing yards. Halfback Curtis Dickey ran 48 yards for the fourth Aggie touchdown early in the third quarter to apparently sew up the victory in both teams' season opener. Dickey, the outside runner in the Aggies' wishbone offense, sprinted for 136 yards as the Aggie defense poured through the Jayhawks for 342 rushing yards. (L'PI) Halfback Terry Miller scored two touchdowns and rushed for 189 yards Saturday, leading Oklahoma State to an easy season-opening 34-17 victory over Tulsa. Miller, the leading underclassman in the Heis-matT Trophy balloting a year ago, scored on a 16-yard burst over right tackle and a 13-yard run. Miller, who carried the ball 25 times, also broke loose for 50 setting the state for Skip Taylor's 5-yard touchdown run. Although the crowd cheered Miller's every move, a tough Cowboy defense also figured prominently in the victory. The defenders, led by linebackers John Corker and Joe Avanzini with 14 and 11 tackles, stopped Tulsa three times inside the 4-yard line and twice from the 47 and 15.

Tulsa took a 3-0 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Steve Cox, but the Cowboys scored late in the first quarter on second-string quarterback Randy Stephenson's 1-yard plunge ending a 57-yard drive. From then on it was all Oklahoma State until the fourth quarter. The Cowboys also scored on a 37-yard pass from Stephenson to split end Charles Jenkins, climaxing an 80-yard march. Tulsa scored twice in the last quarter. V.
