On eximinition of Bullard'a carpet- tack it waa found to contain nearly $1,800, of hlch some $1,173 was counterfeit National and United Btatei bank-notes, and perhapi $30 wis Canadian money. The most of the bink-notos were iu $100 or $50 bills. He will be held fori preliminary eximinition, bnt claims tbit he belongs to the secret service of the United Stutoi, and also that he Is a teacber of the art of delecting counterfeit money, and bad the "queer" for that purpose. He was flrit arrested it Paris, but no proof against him being found upon his per son, he was allowed to go; but Marshal Owens, suspecting bis true character, requeued tbo conductor to watch him.
