I The pressure for loans to-day was not great, and alight gain in currency waa reported by some houses, bat the market la still working very close, and all bat flrst-olius borrowers experience con iderable difficulty in negotiating loans, The regular discount-bouses fled ample employment for their means In attending to the claims of depositors, and oufslde parties meqt with no encouragement at these institutions, being compelled to eeek accommodations in the open market, and are compelled to pay very fall rates. Depositors in good standing are sup plied at 1PQ12 per and in some cases aa low as 9 per but thia la an exceptional rate. In the open market IX1X per cent, month are the current figures, sad on the street 2 per rent, has been charged for tempprary loans.

The banks were in 'receipt of ad ditional supplies ef currency from -New York, and fair amount waa also received from the Interior, but looal checking con tinues heavy, and they bare not been able to increase their balances to any extent. The heaviest borrowers at present are the pork packers and whisky dealers, through other branches of trade ars well represented in the list of applicants'. 'There was a firmer market for exchange, the demand being better, and the receipts" not so-heavy.
