David Lain, second in command of the Sheriff's Department for nearly eight years, won the Democratic race handily over Chip Yanta, who retired from the department six years ago. On the Republican side, voters picked Sheriff's Department Sgt. Susan Resteau who has worked the patrol division, detective bureau and jail by a sound margin over Porter County drug unit Coordinator Robert Taylor and Bethlehem Steel retiree Harold Steven Lush. COUNTY COMMISSIONER Harper wins handily, will face Herzog' Bob Harper won the Democratic nomination for Center District Porter County Commissioner on Tuesday night over Barry Siegers, who disappeared from public view soon after his surprise filing in February.

Harper will face Republican Mike Herzog, a Valparaiso firefighter, in the general election. Herzog filed for the 4th District County Council nomination, but he declared several weeks ago that he would not contest the race and will run for commissioner. i COUNTY COUNCIL Stevenson holds on in 2nd District Porter County Councilwoman Rita Stevenson withstood a challenge from Portage real estate agent Laura Dudley on Tuesday night to win the Democratic nomination for the County Council's 2nd District. Stevenson, who has been on the council since 2002, supported a 0.25 percent income tax increase in May 2005 to fund the county's membership in the Regional Development Authority, a move that Dudley opposed. She will face Republican Mark Sulski, who was unopposed Tuesday in the general election.

Gesse and Bucko to face off for council seat Mike Bucko said someone jokingly referred to himself and Brian Gesse recently as political dinosaurs and had commented what a joy it would be to see them face off this fall for a seat on the county council. Well, that bit of humor became a reality Tuesday night as both men won their parties' nomination for a shot at the 4th District Porter County Council seat. "I will run against an old dinosaur anytime," Bucko said, as the final few votes were posted in the front of the crowd gathered at the county administration center. "It's just who will be T. rex?" COUNTY ASSESSOR Sexton defeats LaFever in GOP bid Porter Town Councilman William Sexton narrowly defeated incumbent Shirley LaFever in the Republican bid for county assessor in Tuesday's primary election.

"It was a well-done campaign," Sexton said of his victory. "We stuck to grass roots on the issues. People believe the government needs to be reformed, and we're moving in that direction."
