to 5 p.m. News-Messenger reports KINGS ISLAND Paramount's Kings Island opened its 1996 season Saturday with a slate of new attractions that includes a "go-kart" race track, an in-park entertainment television network and a new lineup of shows, including a professional ice skating production. In late spring, the park will also debut "The Outer Limits: Flight of Fear," a totally enclosed multi-million dollar themed ride that represents the first rollercoaster of its kind in the world. "This year we are introducing more new attractions than any other year in the park's history," said Al Weber, general manager and executive vice president of the park. At XS Race Way, driving fans can take the wheel of a NASCAR race monitors placed throughout the park and in major attraction lines.

The 1996 season live show entertainment includes an ice skating spectacular, "Paramount on Ice: Blockbusters!" Performed on-stage at the Paramount Theatre, the show features professional ice skaters paying tribute to memorable music from the stage and screen. In late spring, Kings Island will open "The Outer Limits: Flight of Fear," a new generation of roller-coaster. Based on Showtime's "The Outer Limits" series, the roller coaster uses special effects and technology. Riders are blasted from zero to 53 mph through a black hole into a completely enclosed and dark capsule. Once launched into the capsule, riders experience a series of twists and turns.

"Sandusky Bandstand," 8 to 1 1 network features sports bloopers, music videos, park information and a variety of other entertaining programs. Additionally, a roving camera crew within the park will break into the network broadcast from time to time with live segments featuring park guests and their experiences. The programming will be shown on more than 185 television car for a 15-lap run against 19 other cars. The race way features an oval track with a high-banked turn and cars that reach speeds up to 18 mph. The oval track is wide enough to allow cars to pass one another on either side.

An in-park network television system also debuts to make waiting in line easier. Called Q-TV, the new p.m. at Ramone's located at the intersection of Ohio 2 and US 6 in Sandusky. Doors open at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be sold.

The show highlights the work of Terra's graphic students. The works will be displayed on all three floors of the General Technologies Building.

Graphics instructor Bob Jones is in charge of the exhibit. The show is in conjunction with "A Day With the Arts" program which will be held Saturday as part of Community College month. There also will be a music recital, with performances by 100 area piano students. They will be performing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you plan to go Migratory Bird Day activities will also take place on the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, adjacent to the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. The entrances to Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge are along Ohio 2, between Ohio 19 and Ohio 590, 17 miles west of Port Clinton.

International Migratory Bird Day hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Maumee Bay State Park in eastern Lucas County will host Migratory Bird Day activities at the Milton B. Trautman Nature Center. The entrance to Maumee Bay State Park is located at the end of North Curtice Road, off Ohio 2 The 33-room Rutherford B.

Hayes Victorian Mansion at the Hayes Presidential Center closes to the public at 3 p.m. Sunday, in preparation for the "Hayes Heritage Piano Recital." Jennifer McFarland, a direct descendent of President Hayes, will perform pieces by Scarlatti, Copland, Liszt and Beethoven during the recital in the Hayes Home at 4 p.m. The final public tour of the home is at 2:45 p.m., while the Hayes Museum remains open to the public until 5 p.m. McFarland is a former winner of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra Competition, a four-time winner of the Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory School Scholarship and recipient of the Ohio Music Teacher's Association 19 Scholarship. Tickets for the recital are $25 per person and may be purchased at the Hayes Museum Admission Desk or via telephone at 419332-2081 or 800-998-7737; VISAMC accepted.

Formal attire is suggested. Following the performance, there will be an opportunity to visit the historic Hayes Museum. Only 60 tickets are available. Proceeds will benefit the educational mission of the Hayes Presidential Center. More than 10,000 school children visit the Hayes Presidential Center each year to learn about Hayes, presidential and Ohio history, the Civil War and the Gilded Age.

News-Messenger reports The Ohio Division of Wildlife will host a day of activities for birders and other wildlife enthusiasts May 11 at the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in western Ottawa County. The highlight of the Migratory Bird Day's events will be the Division's first-ever release of trumpeter swans at 10 a.m. The release of about 15 swans on the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area is the first release of swans in the state in a reintroduction project undertaken by the division in cooperation with the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Ducks Unlimited and the Wilds, a wildlife center in Muskingum County. Activities will continue throughout the day, including events at the Migratory Bird Center. The sk-mile-long wheelchair accessible boardwalk provides excellent bird watching opportunities.

Scheduled activities include marsh wagon tours, children's activities, songbird banding demonstrations, decoy and songbird carving, nest box and other birding display and free birding publications. A concessions tent will be available. An estimated three to five billion birds migrate annually between North America and the Neotropics..
