THE CORBIN Times-TRiBUNE Page Two Friday, January 21, 1972 SPORTS JACK THURSTON, Sports Editor Basketball Baseball Football Golf Corbin Hosts Laurel County Tonight Both Teams Have High Potentials In SEKC Game By KEN RAPPOPORT Associated Press Sports Writer After losing by 65 points to Indiana earlier this year, Notre Dame CoachDick Phelps philo- sophized that things could be worse. He was right. Things have gotten worse for his basketball team. The fighting Irish have been beaten four of five times since that Indiana in- cluding an 84-79 defeat to Du- quesne Thursday night. "We're not a good running club and we're not a good shooting club and, actually, THE ROOKIES OF THE YEAR Jim Plunkett there's not much else," says Phelps, who's not used to such ineptness.

Before he came to Notre Darne this season, Phelps didn't know what it was like to be a loser. He coached spectacular freshmen teams at Penn and led Fordham's exciting club into the NCAA playoffs last season. He knew he wouldn't have a rose garden at Notre Dame, with the loss of seven players from last year's 21-8 squad. But, on the other hand, he didn't expect all the thorns. Two returning lettermen were lost to injury and a bright sophomore was bounced because of disciplinary problems.

Georgia Tech, one of the eight teams to Beat Notre Dame this season, trimmed Tulane 94-78 in Thursday night's action which included none of the ranked clubs. Elsewhere, LaSalle topped American University 59-53 and Temple ripped St. John's, N.Y. 79-65 in a doubleheader at Philadelphia's Palestra; Utah turned back Utah State 66-59; Tulsa nipped Creighton 76-75 and St. Louis trounced Evans- ville 94-81; and Oral Roberts, the nation's leading scoring team, beat Idaho State 86-85.

Notre Dame had serious in- tentions of winning its fourth game in 11 this year before Du- quesne cut off a late Irish rally. Lionel Billingly scored 29 points for the Dukes, who won their llth game in 12. Steve Post scored 28 points and Bob "Peanut" Murphy had 22 to pace Georgia Tech over Tulane; Steve Baruffi scored" two field goals and made a key steal in the final minutes for LaSalle; Temple held St. John's to three field goals in the first 16 minutes to handily whipped the Redmen; John Dearman led Utah with 17 points and St. Louis shot a hot 54 per cent from the field while crushing outgunned Evansville.

Fordham's basketball co- captains are Thomas Sullivan of Miami Shores. and Ken Charles of Brooklyn. N.Y. In ABA All-Star Classic-- The Corbin Redhounds return to Edwards Gym tonight for their "big test" of the year when they host the Laurel County Cardinals. This could also be the "big one" for local fans if several things materialize.

If Corbin plays up to their potential and Laurel County is down--If Laurel County is in top form and Corbin plays as they have in several games or if both teams play in top form--in the latter case anything could happen. Laurel County--pre-season pick to be on of the top teams in the state have played "up and down" basketabll all season. They have won easily over several strong teams and on the other hand have lost games they were picked to win. In the last two games they have lost to an average Mon- ticello team by 72-71 (Corbin edged this same team in the Laurel County Invitational) and Two Kentucky Players To Start Corbin Freshmen And-- By BILL WINTER Associated Press Sports Writer LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Two American Basketball Association blood rivals--Utah and Kentucky--dominate the rosters for next Saturday night's 5th ABA All-Star classic.

Defending league champion Utah will provide three of the five starters and the coach for the West while Kentucky, loser to the Stars in last spring's wild seven-game ABA championship series, will provide two star- ters, a sub and the coach for the East. Blessed with superior fire- power, the East will be favored to repeat its 1971 victory and take a 3-2 series lead. The game will be played to an expected full house of 16,933, in Freedom Hall and beamed to television audiences in most of the nation through a special network arrangedby the ABA. Tip-off will be at 8:30 p.m EST. Utah center Zelmo Beaty, a transplant from the National Basketball Association, for- ward Willie Wise and Guard' Glen Combs will join Indiana's Roger Brown and Denver's Ralph Simpson in the West starting lineup.

Stars' coach LaDell Anderson will handle the West club. The Thorobreds were ranked No. 1 in the nation among col- lege division teams early in this basketball season, then lost four games and seemed to have lost their punch.

But senior star Travis Grant pulled the Therobieds tr jn the winning track jay night, scoring a layup uasket and a free throw in the final seconds to key Kentukky State's 88-87 victory over Carson- Newman of Tennessee. In other Kentucky action Thursday night, Thomas More took an 83-75 decision over Cen- tral State of Ohio; Georgetown upended Northwood of Indiana 81-68; Union romped to a 102-84 verdict over Lincoln, and Cumberland remained un- beaten in Kentucky Inter- collegiate Athletic Conference with a 68-67 win over Camp- bellsville. Only one Kentucky team is scheduled for action tonight. Northern Kentucky will visit Point Park of Pittsburgh, Pa. Kentucky State got possession of the ball with 40 seconds re- maining and the score tied at 85- all against Carson-Newman.

The Thorobreds stalled until Grant drove for a layup with three seconds left. Fouled as he scored, he sank a free toss that negated the last-second basket of Carson-Newman's Mike Ogan. Grant, the leading scorer in the college division, pumped in 47 points, while Ogan led the losers with 24. The win lifted State to an 8-4 overall record. Ted Tolephein hit 22 points and Kevin Timon added 20 to pace Thomas More to a road win over Central State of Ohio, while Mike Calhoun scored 22 and Tom Stewart hit 18 to lead Georgetown past Northwood.

Union got a yeoman perform- ance from Bill Swafford in de- feating Lincoln. Swafford had 32 points and 12 rebounds. Melvin Harris hit a basket and Tom Jensen added a free throw in the closing moments to seal Cumberland's win over Campbellsville. Jensen and Cumberland's Jeff Rhodes tied for game scoring honors with 20 apiece. Cincy Freshman Star Faces Two Charges a clean sweep of the invasion of Lexington with a 34-12 win over the Sayre Forsh.

Corbin "8" held Lexington Sayre to only four field goals while connecting on 20 after taking a 16-1 lead at the end of the first period. The locals led 30-7 at halftime and used 14 players in the second half but still led 47-11 going into the final quarter of play. Dennis Coins topped the local scoring with 15 points on five fielders and as many free throws. Johnny Crawford had four fielders and four charity tosses for 12 points. The Corbin Freshmen blanked Sayre Frosh 10-0 at the end of the first period and led 21-1 at ahlftime.

Corbin was on top by 26-10 starting the final period. Individual Scoring LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Manual, Central and Owens- boro posted impressive wins Thursday night and St. Xavier and Flaget just squeaked by in the first round of the Louisville Invitational- High School Bas- ketball Tournament. McDowell led Manual 10-9 in the opening minutes of play, but Manual tied it at 11-11 and never trailed after that as the posted their 10th win, 95-47, against one loss.

Phillip Bond led Manual with 25 points while Kentucky's tall- est high school player, 6-11 Stevie Smith, pumped in 18. Number-five ranked Owens- boro swept past Ahrens 78-64 behind 23 points by 6-7 forward Jerry Thurston, 18 by Kenny Higgs and 15 by Steve Maddox. Central, ranked No. 2 in the tate, led all the way against Eastern, winning 86-59. forward Gregory; Boone chipped in 19 points for the winners fol- lowed by Johnny Turner and Eugene Ford with 14 each.

St. Xavier needed two free throws from Tony Robben to break a 61-61 tie with 24 seconds left against FranklinSimpson. The victors added one more free throw for a 63-61 win bringing their season record to 9-3. In other tournament action it was Male 84, Iroquois 72; Shawnee 78, DeSales 51; Flaget 69, Cov. Holy Cross 66 and Bal- lard 48, Atherton 42.

will be Virginia guard Charlie Scott, and forward Rick Barry and guard Bill Melchioni, both of the New York Nets. Kentucky's Joe Mullaney will coach the East. Scott carries the highest scor- ing average, close to 35 points per game, but Barry's 31.5 av- erage and Issel's 31.3 clip give the East awesome firepower. Melchionni, a 6-foot-l sharp- shooter out of Villanova, carries a 20.1 average and Gilmore, the league's tallest player at 7-foot- 2, has scored 23 per game and is the league's rebounding leader. Simpson, a smooth second- year man from Michigan State, may be the West's chief offen- sive hope.

He carries a 30.2 scoring average with West for- wards Wise and Brown Ttwth av- eraging just over 20, Combs'' ni't-' ting at an 18.5 clip and Beaty at just over 24. There's more bad news for the West on the East bench, from which Mullaney can throw in Pittsburgh's John Brisker, who's averaging 28.7 points, Virginia's Julius Erving, aver- aging 25.9, Carolina's Jim or Pittsburgh's George Thompson, 26.1. Tuesday night were whipped good by Henry Clay of Lexington. The Cardinals won over a good Harlan team in an overtime early in the season at Laurel County and then lost to the same team in their first game of the tournament. One of their most impressive wins was last week when they downed powerful Pineville by 14 points just after the Mountain Lions had embarrassed the Bell County Bobcats by a good margin.

Corbin will have to stop big Mike Collier and flashy Ricky Storm if they are to stay in the ball game. Corbin has at least three players that could hit over 20 points in any game, Arlen Horton, Bruce Carpenter and Jeff Martin. If all three are in top form Corbin could well revenge a shellacking from the Cardinals last year. Horton had 39 against Lynn Camp Tuesday with Martin tossing in 24 while Carpenter ruled the backboards and hit for 17 points. The big burden tonight will fall on the shoulders of Car- penter.

He must continue to rule the backboards for the locals to stay in the game but his assignment will be the largest of the year--against Collier. Corbin is still without the services of three year regular Pat Hash. Bruce Baker is again slated to get the starting nod at forward. CINCINNATI (AP) Star freshman basketball player John Herman Luster, 20 was suspended from the team Thursday night by University of i i a i athletic director George Smith after the youth's arrest on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Luster as to appear in Ham- ilton County Municipal Court today on the felony charges. A high school All-America from Central High School in Louisville, Luster was ar- rested by campus police and turned over to Cincinnati police after he was identified by a 19- year-old coed and a desk clerk. Police charged the 6-foot-5 Luster was the assailant who grabbed the coed in the first floor lobby ot Saunders Hall at 2 a.m.

and dragged her at knife- point down a stairwell to the basement. The young woman suffered a neck cut. George Medford, 67, a retired Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy, said he was working as desk clerk when he heard the girl's screams. Medford told police he ran to the girl's aid and her assailant slashed at him several times with a knife before fleeing. Police said Medford sum- moned campus officers when he spotted Luster near the peri- odicals counter in the lobby of the dormitory later in the day.

Luster was scheduled to ap- pear in Hamilton County Mu- nicipal Court today on the fel- ony charges.
