Why didn't people kind of stand up to it?" Noone's character tries to seduce a teenage boy who helps drop off and pick up laundry at the asylum where she's imprisoned a job that her father had when he was 13.

But the character wasn't based on him, she empha- sizes, and her father (now a railroad worker) really didn't see much of what was going on. He found out a lot more about what went on in the asylums when he became older. "The Magdalene Sisters," which begins in 1964, was named best film at last year's Venice Film Festival It has been met with mostly positive reviews, though the Vatican offered a particularly scathing criticism. The film can be viewed as brutally honest or unrelentingly heavy-handed. A self -described goes-to-Mass-on-Christmas kind of Catholic, Noone disagrees with criticism that the film is anti-Catholic.

"I don't think this is against the religion and the beliefs. This is against someone who would do such terrible things," she says. "If the people running these places had been living by the religion, these terrible things wouldn't have happened in the first place." And after all the bad publicity over sexual abuse by Catholic priests, she maintains that this film doesn't amount to piling on. Nora-Jane Noone's movie debut hit close to home in a few ways. "The Magdalene Sisters" is set in Noone's Irish homeland (though it was made in Scotland).

It's about Irish Catholics like her, and there's a character who roughly approximates her father when he was a youth. The 19-year-old neophyte plays an orphan deemed in "moral danger" of being a nymphet. While other "bad girls" were sent to Ireland's Magdalene asylums for having illegitimate children or being raped, Noone's Bernadette is locked up for being too alluring. She snagged the part through an open audition in Galway, where she's attending college as a science major. "I wanted someone who could show a young woman change drastically from being feisty and mischievous into someone very dark and damaged and then back again," says Scottish writer-director Peter Mullan, who won the 1998 best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for Ken Loach's "My Name Is Joe." "Nora had the natural ability to make those jumps." Noone sounds gratified that Mullan was so taken with her versatility, since that's the trait she respects most.
