Its simple message: "War is not healthy for children and other living things. Talk peace." The protest is the creation of "Another Mother For Peace," a volunteer group formed five weeks ago at the home of Barbara Avedon, an Oscar-winning film and television writer. Since then, more than 175,000 cards have been sold throughout the country.

Mrs. Avedon hopes one million will reach Washington by May 14. Working day and night to fill the orders are movie and television personalities and the wives of producers, directors, lawyers and doctors. The mailing operation fills the second floor of an office building in a fashionable business district. Orders already are in from New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Texas and many other states.

Said Mrs. Avedon: "It all started when I had some Hollywood friends over to see my son Josh, who was about to have, his first birthday. The year had gone so fast. I realized then that someday I may have to send him to war." The women agreed what they wanted most for Mother's Day was- peace. Actress Joanne Woodward wrote a letter to go with- the cards, asking the recipient to drum up support through women's clubs and other organizations.

Mrs. Avedon and the others used their Christmas mailing lists to send them to friends. The gently worded cards, free of polemics, were a big success. Inside, the cards continue: "For my Mother's Day gift ihis year I don't want candy or flowers. I want an end to killing.

We who have given life must be dedicated to preserving it. Please talk peace." Actor Robert Vaughn, star of the "Man From U.N.C.L.E." television series, is among the group's top male boosters. He plugs the cards at personal appearances and even helps stuff envelopes. Other volunteers are es Whitney Blake, Lauren Bacall, Janice Rule (Mrs. Ben Gazzarra) and Donna Winters, plus the wives of Dean Martin, Dick Van Dyke and Herschel Bernardi.

The wife of conductor Leonard Bernstein offered help from New York, and an order came from Gloria Vanderbilt. Y.M. C.A.
