3 Places To Go Movies, A10 Film Review, A10 FRIDAY TIME OUT The News-Messenger, Fremont, Ohio Thursday, July 6, 1995 A9 Curtain going up on 'South Pacific' in Oak Harbor Other leading roles will be played by John Blodgett as peppery Naval captain, and Michael Mesnard as a regulation Naval commander. "South Pacific" ran just short of five years on Broadway and for two years in London, while all over the U.S. and Canada, a touring company continued for a full five years to play this light and yet somber musical drama about strange meetings, loneliness, love, gallantry and heroism on a remote Pacific island war base. The production at the Oak Harbor High School is being directed by Paula Nor-wine and its settings have been designed by Robert Stucker and Paul Slovak. For ticket information, call (419) OAK HARBOR South Pacific, the Pulitzer Prize winning musical play by Rodgers and Hammerstein, is being presented at the Oak Harbor High School Theatre beginning Friday.

There also will be performances on Saturday and Sunday and on July 13, 14 and 15. All performances are at 8 p.m. except on Sunday, July 9, when there will be a 2 p.m. matinee. Laura Friar and Briann Edwards will star in this bittersweet romance of the war days on a South Seas island, as the Navy nurse from Little Rock, (as "corny as Kansas in and the exiled French planter, of whom, in her indecision, she sings two of the most famous songs of the show "I'm in Love With A Wonderful Guy" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair." Edwards, of course, will be singing the show's immortal love songs, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine." Together, they will be singing the celebrated soliloquys, in which each, hesitating to hope for love from the other, admits feeling bashful as a schoolboy and a schoolgirl.

The second rueful romance in this production of "South Pacific" will be enacted by Kristen Schmank and Richard Schnip-ke as the Marine lieutenant and the Tonkinese girl with whom he falls hopelessly in love, and yet refuses to marry because of the racial difference between them. "Younger Than Springtime" is the famous song of their love story. Rachel Walsh will have the part of the rowdy Tonkinese woman, Bloody Mary, eager to sell souvenirs and to profit in every possible way from the American troops on her island, who sings the hauntingly beautiful song about the nearby, other Eden-like island, "Bali Ha'i," as well as the memorable song of domestic felicity, "Happy Talk." Clarence DeTray will have the role of the irrepressible Seabee, Luther Bilks, the conniver, the fixer, the finagler, man of strategy and big dealer of the sort that was represented by at least one man in every wartime military unit in the 1940's, and in this role he has the assignment of leading the male chorus in the exuberant song of the woman-hungry warriors "There is Nothing Like a Dame." Knee pads and padded bicycle pants also can be worn. Learn how to stop, especially amongst traffic. When in traffic, follow the same rules as bicyclists do: "Stay with the traffic, use hand signals when you're going to turn. Don't waste money on a cheap pair of skates -buy a good set. Don't expect in-line skating to be like roller skating and ice skating. It will be faster and perhaps more bumpy. To make turning easier, wheels can be rocketed. The front and back wheels are slightly elevated.

Wheels can be adjusted at the place of purchase. Wrist injuries are the most common skating casualty, said Dan Waggoner. Instead of breaking a fall with your wrists, you should roll on your I Karaoke with Shelly, 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Bud's Tavern.

More PLACES, A10 i .1. I. j.hi v- By YAMUNA RAMACHANDRAN Staff Writer Ten years ago, in-line skating was nearly unknown. Fremont Schwinn Cyclery carried only one low-cost brand of skates, and people would gawk at Leslie Mack Evans on her Rollerblade skates. But since then, its popularity has skyrocketed.

In-line skates are faster and more maneuverable than roller skates and provide a good workout. Evans, director of the Work Force Development Council at Terra, began skating about six years ago. "I saw some guys doing it," she said. "At that point, I'd never seen any women on skates." So she bought some. She said, "At first, people would stop and stare, like 'What is she But now, in-line skating is not only prevalent and fun, it's exercise.

"I feel it's a good workout, especially if I skate to music," Evans said. "I try to add some dance steps in there. "I love to skate in big parking lots, and with a Walkman on. It helps me unwind from what's going on in my day." In-line skating is also a good way to cross-train. Tom Woodruff, dental director at Community Health Center, skates in the summer to prepare for winter skiing.

He puts cones on a hill and skates through those. Sometimes he even takes his ski poles with him. People can skate on streets near home and in parks such as Connors Park in Bal-lville Township and Maumee State Park. Naturally as its popularity has increased, so have sales. "I sell more now in a week than I did the first year I sold them," said Dan Waggoner, owner of Fremont Schwinn Cyclery.

There are about 30 to 40 brands, ranging from department-store quality to top-notch. Waggoner carries several versions of the Rollerblade brand of in-line skates, ranging in cost from about $60 to $300. Elsewhere, prices can be as high as $600. He also sells wheels with differing rubber densities for different surfaces. Softer wheels may smooth skating on rough roads, Waggoner said When skating, Woodruff wears both a helmet and wrist guards.

Wrist guards are an essential, because many people use their wrists to break their falls and break their wrists instead. "Make sure you get wrist guards and knee pads," Woodruff said. "Find a place like Conner Park where there is a walking track with grass on both sides, because you'll faU a lot." '3k 4D?
