Among them is a two hour TV magazine entitled "First Tuesday" which spotlights poverty in northern New Mexico, life in a primitive New Guinea village, an interview with prooiinent heart surgeon Dr. Denton Cooley, and many more items, on channels 3 and 4. In another news special, "Correspondents' Report The First 100 Days of Richard Nixon," CBS newsmen evaluate the President's performance to date channel 11. 7:30 Competition for the title of America's Junior Miss 1969 comes to a peak tonight as Mike Douglas hosts the 12th annual pageant on channels 3, 4 and 11.

On Mod Squad, Line spearheads an investigation to clear a friend without informing Captain Greer on channels 5, 7, and 13. 8:30 Martha Raye and the First Edition are guests in the first rerun for Red channels, 2, 8, and 11. What you do, if you are the harried producers of NBC's "Best on Record" special broadcast Monday night, is get them on camera somehow, toss in a lot of color for background.

Then you hope that in the audience's eagerness to see the stars and find out who won the "Record of the Year" award, nobody will notice that as a TV show, it really didn't amount to much. The difficulty, of course, was just too much of everything there were 11 different nominees and award winners performing. There was also another problem which involved the eyes and ears of the beholders: we've been hearing that songs and seeing the performers all over the place all season long. The only surprise in the show was the on camera award of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to the singing team of Simon and Garfunkel for "Mrs. Robinson," which as nominees they had sung earlier in the show.

It was the one attempt at whimsy in the show-some trick comedy film shot in a deserted Yankee Stadium. Non-musicians Rowan and Martin opened and closed the show; Don Rickles passed some insults to Tiny Tim; Flip Wilson presented one of the singing stars. As celebrities they swelled the list of stars but their contributions to pop music was as hazy as most of their comedy material. Most of the Grammy Award winners Jose Feliciano, O. C.

Smith, Glen Campbell and Jean-nie C. Riley, among others, presented their hits in the context of the program. The Beatles were seen in a film clip that had already been broadcast on television. Maybe the Grammy Awards have become a bit of a drag because of TV's current passion for pop music and pop singers. Maybe award shows come along so often in the spring that they are losing their old appeal.

It is interesting to note that this year's Oscar awards show, while it still topped the most recent Nielsen ratings list, failed to attract it's usual outsize audience by several hundred thousand homes. It was, nevertheless, the number one show during the two week ending April 20, but only by a percentage of a point. The Dick Van Dyke-Mary Tyler Moore special ran it a close second. Bill Cosby's special was in third place. Broadway's Tony awards, also broadcast during that time, came in a weak 74th in a list of over 100 shows rated.
