Charismatic cast makes this an entertaining cold-war melodrama despite a far-fetched script. Dudley Moore, David Huddleston, John Lithgow. Vs ONE MAGIC CHRISTMAS (G).

A modern fairy tale. A struggling housewife and mother has no patience with Christmas, but an angel is assigned to turn her around with the aid of her young open-minded daughter. Nicely filmed, but sticky-sweet and the plot involves a very heavy situation used in pushing the Christmas spirit, faith in Santa, and the need to believe. KING SOLOMON'S MINES (PG-13). Where are the riches of King Solomon's legendary mines? The quest is on in Africa in this busy but tiresome action-adventure yarn based on H. Rider Haggard's work. Chase and Akyroyd complement each other neatly with their dry humor nd sense of how to play a sightgag, and the cast that includes Donna Dixon and Steve Forrest is smoothly supportive. It's the script that's wanting. So many comedy films get started with a basic notion that seems good in draft or in a story conference. But it's another thing to flesh one out so that it's consistently funny. By WILLIAM WOLF Gonnott News Servico It would take pretty clumsy scriptwriting and direction not to get some laughs out of combining Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd in virtually anything.

Laughs there are in "Spies Like Us," their new rowdy comedy-adventure. But before long it's apparent that everyone is straining extra hard to figure ways to keep the comic central idea from sinking. Aykroyd, Lowell Ganz, and Babaloo Mandel wrote the script from a story by Aykroyd and Dave Thomas, and director John Landis House," "Into the has accented the outrageousness in trying to elicit bellylaughs. The misadventures are built around the ineptness of Chase and Aykroyd as secret agents singled out as expendable patsies in a mire of international intrigue. The funniest scenes are at the outset when their characters as misfits are developed.

It's low comedy with a "Saturday Night Live" bent, in contrast to what a film of this sort might have been like had Jerry Lewis or Abbott and Costello been the stars. The action zips nearly every a Moves are rated on a star scale of one to tour. Four is best, OM worst.
