News 11:15 P.M. OO Weather Sports 11:20 P.M. 3 Sports 11:25 P.M. Weather 11:30 P.M. Tonight Johnny Car- By Mimi Mead NEW YORK The public usually thinks of Lee Bemick as a talented actress, usually portraying either a tormented lady in a small town, with poorly banked fires of passion smoldering in the old bosom; or else a tough, sultry type with wild bursts of poetry about her, who becomes a symbol to the men around her.

What Lee Remick likes to do Is be a song-and-dance gal, preferably in a fast, hot comedy. "More than anything in the world," she admitted recently, "I like to do musicals. I just love them. But nobody thinks of me for them, not only not the public but not the directors or writers, either. It's actress, actress, actress," and she sighed in mock despair, her honey blonde hair swinging behind her In a pony tail.

Lee has appeared in various guest spots on television variety shows in which she got a small opportunity to exhibit her terp- sfchorean talents, and she started her career in summer stock with assorted roles in "Annie Get Your Gun," "Oklahoma!" "Show Boat," and "Paint Your Wagon," but she has been haunted by the actress image throughout her career. She is breaking away momentarily on Saturday night when she appears as wicked, delightful Lola, the devil's handmaiden in NBC's 2 hour production of "Damn Yankees." She couldn't be more delighted with the whole arrangement. "I simply loved it," she said, Page 7, The Daily Reporter, Dover, 0. April On the Hollywood Scene Stuntman Wins Award By BOB THOMAS AP Movie-Television Writer HOLLYWOOD (AP) "I'll go to the Oscars in a tuxedo, but I'll be darned if they'll get me in a set of tails." This wa5 the initial comment by Yakima Canutt upon learning that he was to be presented with a special Academy Award Monday night. The citation Canutt's good to be read by friend Charlton Heston: "For creating the profession of stuntman as it exists today and for the development of many safety devices used by stuntmen everywhere." The average citizen might wonder why the prestigious academy would be rewarding a stuntman.

Movie buffs know why. They recognize Yakima as a Western star of the 1920s, later a fearless, imaginative stuntman, and more recently the director of action sequences in such films as "Ben-Hur," and "El Cid." Heston, who performed under Canutt's tutelage in the latter epics, has cited good reason for Yak's honor: "In the old days stuntmen were a disorganized bunch who could take a chance on anything. A lot of them got killed that way. Yakima came along and reduced stunt work to a science. He could do greater stunts than anyone else because he developed ways of doing them safely." Despite his concern over wearing tails at the Oscar ceremony, Canutt expressed pleasure at the honorary award.

"It's thing," a pretty wonderful he commented. "It Lee Remick stars as Lola in the production of "Damn Yankees" Saturday night. her blue eyes shining. "I had never done it before, even in summer stock, and I had never worked with any of the cast before, except Jim Backus. Of course, working with Phil Harris is a treat in itself." Lee was particularly Impressed with Jerry Lanning, a talented newcomer who plays the hero, Joe Hardy, in Damn Yankees.

His voice is so fantastic." she commented. "We'd come in in the morning, you know, everybody feeling like morning: not wanting anything but coffee and cigarets and certainly not to sing; and out would come this incredible voice as Jerry started to warm UD and sud- up all denly we would all be sitting there just smiling and feeling so happy. He's truly marvelous." Lee looks like any exceptionally handsome, quiet, well-bred young New York matron, which of course she is. As she sat in Sardi's in a simple black and white striped sweater with her hair falling down her back, she spoke happily and simply of her own childhood and her children, Catherine, 8 and Matthew, 6. She is married to TV producer Bill Colleran, and they live quietly in New York City in a jownhouse.

Unlike many young actors and actresses, Lee's whole life lias not been consumed with acting since her early years. In a way, however, the theatre played a background to her life, since her mother, Patricia Remick, was a successful actress. She never pushed her daughter, but Lee's childhood was filled with a succession of amusing, creative, warmhearted people from the theatre, which she says did a great deal toward propelling her into that orbit. Asked why she thought the public seems to be reacting favorably to the full length Broadway musicals that are currently being re-created on television, Lee remarked "There are so many variety shows these days that I think the public takes kindly to anything that's all of one piece. "One thing I must say rapid- though," she continued with a smile, "is that I most defin- tely am not and will not con- eider a TV series.

That sounds a little conceited, I know, but I have been asked to do several; everybody is sooner or aren't they? "I wouldn't want to be married to one part that long. Besides which, it would mean California again, which would frightful. But most of all, I guess I'm lazy. I like to do one project, like a movie or a play, and then become a whole 'CityofGoW Is up for Sale WELLS, B.C. (AP) All is not well in Wells.

Most of the town is up for sale. For the purchaser, however, there's an estimated $80,000 in gold in addition to a hospital, 35 homes and other buildings and machinery. The gold is to be had for the in cracks in floors, in debris in a mine and embedded in the dirt around the mine. It has been lost in 34 years of operations during which Cariboo Gold Quartz Mines Ltd. has produced more than $31 million in gold bars at Wells.

The company says the cost of mining almost equals the fixed price of gold so it has decided to shut down its operations and sell its property here. He promised "the shortest speech in my life." Still erect and firm-muscled at 71, Canutt is a man of action, not words. This has been true since his days as a rodeo star. he was enlisted as a Western performer. "I was a pretty lousy actor," he admitted, "but I did star in 48 five-reelers that went pretty well." When his starring career faded, he switched to heroics for name performers. Among his most memorable: riding through burning Atlanta as Clark Gable in "Gone With the Wind," and halting the runaway team as John Wayne in "Stagecoach." Yakima's stunt career came to a close at 50 when he broke both ankles in a fall for Roy Rogers. He figured it was time to quit. Starting as a director of Republic Westerns, he became a specialist in action scenes for such films as "Ivanhoe," "Knights of the Round Table," "Helen of Troy," "Mogambo," "Fall of the Roman Empire," "Cat Ballon," and "Khartoum." Canutt is Scandinavian and his real first name is Enos.
