field goal would stand' up This would have made a rhubarb that developed over OSU's field goal attempt loom all the more important When Derrick was tackled near the sideline OSU coach Cliff Speegle grabbed a deflected pass thrown by OSU quarterback Mike Miller in the third quarter and raced 47 yards for the game's only touchdown to put the contest out of reach Bill Tobin had given Missouri a 3-0 lead with a first quarter field goal Tobin's field goal came after Missouri had marched 75 yards from its own 19 to the OSU 6 only to be thrown back to the 10 by Oklahoma State's stury de- fense The kick covered 26 yards Oklahoma State made only one serious threat That came as time ran out in the first half The Cowboys moved to the Missouri 16 after picking off the Tiger's third fumble of the half As the clock ticked off the seconds Miller hit halfback Don Derrick at the 16 with a sideline pass but Derrick failed to get out of bounds to stop the clock Oklahoma State lined up quickly and Ted Davis' field goal attempt looked good but the Cowboys were penaliled for an illegal substitution The half ended before another attempt could be made Oklahoma State came out for the I' second half looking like a team on the move On their second series of downs of the third quarter the Cask-boys moved from their osvn 25 to a first down on the Missouri 44 in 8 plays On the next play Missouri tackle Bill Wegener deflected Miller's attempted pass into the right flat Russell grabbed it and outran two Cowboy defenders for the touchdown The victory gave the defending Big Eight Conference
