219-836-6221 GRACELAND Cemetery in Hands of Pray, 2 abbey crypts with HAMMOND It's a project that apparently every elected city official, and some county officials, agree is vital a new criminal justice complex for Hammond with a wing for the jail, courts and its staff, and headquarters for the Police Department But how to finance the project and where the new building should be located are the major details the city will need to hammer out if the project is to get off the ground. At Monday night's City Council meeting, Mayor Duane Dede-low Judge Thomas Stefaniak, Police Chief Fred Behrens, his assistant, City Council members, City Clerk Gerald Bobos and Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter all weighed in with thoughts as to why a new city complex needs to be built. High on most everyone's list was public safety. In a 9-0 vote, the City Council took the first step in giving serious consideration to building a criminal justice complex estimated to cost $10 million. Included in the resolution are requirements the city pay no more than an additional $10 million in interest to finance the building.

The project would be managed by a yet-to-be appointed three member Public Building Commission, with two appointees made by Dedelow and one by the council. -Daniel J.
