He beat Don Garlits of Chicago.

tire quarter mile after his opposition had been disqualified from jumping the starting gun. Bleeker won $500 with a 8.7-second trip at speeds of 175.09 m.p.h. Wasson took $250 runnerup money. Lee Smith of Moline won the $350 first prize in the middle eliminator division, defeating Lee Ehlers of Rock Island in the championship run. Ehlers' prize was $200.

Howard Allen of Evandale, Iowa, won the junior eliminator crown with a victory over the Burnett-Stamary entry of Highland, in the final run. Allen drove a 1938 Chevrolet. Garlits won the first segment of the fuel dragster runoff Saturday night and qualified for the final run Sunday. In addition to the $1,000 runnerup money, he also won $200 for his Saturday victory and another $100 for the lowest elapsed time in fuel dragster competition with a 7.609-second trip down the quarter-mile strip. Prudhomme was beaten in Sunday's second round by the Marshall-Vermilya entry from El Secundo, but mechanical failure forced the winner out and Purdhomme was allowed to continue.

Close Drag Races Prudhomme had a trip on that run, compared with 7.613 seconds by the Marshall-Vermilya team. The new champion also had close calls with two-time World Series champion Kris Karamesines of Chicago and Tom Hoover of Minneapolis. He edged Karamesines by .72 seconds in the fifth round, after nipping Hoover by .07 in the fourth round. Hoover's car burst into flames at the end of his run with Prudhomme and the Minneapolis driver suffered burns on his face and arms, although he was clocked at 223.326 in the previous round to take top speed honors for the meet. Hoover's condition is listed as "good" today at Moline Public Hospital.

Hoover appeared at the 1965 World Series but did not drive because of burns received in a previous fire earlier that season. Wayne Hill of Fox Lake, powered his rear-engine "Re-Entry" to two trips at speeds of 200 miles per hour and became the first to hit that mark in a rear-engine rail. He hit 200 m.p.h. Saturday and was clocked at 202.24 Sunday. By ORRIE PUETZ CORDOVA, III.

Determined Don Prudhomme of Granada Hills, roared back from two defeats Sunday and won the $2,500 top prize in the World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova Drag-way. Eliminated in the second round of Sunday's final fuel dragster runoff, Prudhomme got a second life when the machine that had beaten him was forced out of competition. He came back from there to whip Don Garlits of Chicago for the championship. This climax to the 13th annual World Series occurred when Garlits, who had qualified for the final elimination run by winning Saturday's fuel dragster "marathon," jumped the starter's light and was therefore disqualified. Prudhomme only had to complete his run to win the $2,500 top prize.

He eased through the clocks at the end of the quarter-mile run in 7.635 seconds at speed of 180.360 miles an hour. He had run at 222 miles an hour earlier. Garlits' red-lighted run was at 7.75 seconds and a soft 160.714 miles an hour. Garlits had beaten Prudhomme in the first segment of the fuel dragster marathon Saturday night. The Chicago driver, who has won most of the country's top drag racing events but has never won here, took home $1,000 second prize money.

Tom Larkin of North Hollywood, won the Class AA gas dragster competition in one of four gas rails that toured the quarter-mile strip in less than eight seconds. New Strip Record He defeated the Gopher State Timing Association entry driven by Ron Braun of Minneapolis in the final run to earn the $1,000 prize money in that division. Larkin hit a top speed of 200.46 miles per hour in his winning run and set a new gas dragster strip record. It was the third time during the Series that the mark was lowered and earned him an additional $50 prize money. In super eliminator competition Gabby Bleeker of Evergreen Park, 111., wheeled his 1938 Austin Bantam to the championship with a victory over Curtis Wasson of St.

Louis. Wasson had captured the sentiments of the fans in his semifinal victory when he pushed his disabled Corvette the en fTrail Bucs 1 Game By MURRAY GRASS AP Sports Writer Willie Davis' current hitting "Splurge may not win the National League batting crown for him, but it could help win the National League pennant for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Davis, who had spring thoughts of winning the batting title, lashed four hits for the second consecutive day as the Dodgers defeated San Francisco 5-2 Sunday and moved to within one game of the league lead. The loss dropped the Giants Into a tie for first with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who defeated St. Louis 5-1 after losing the opener of the double-header 3-2.

On Streak Davis' homer and three singles extended his streak to eight straight hits before he grounded out in the ninth inning. Since Aug. 6, when he was hitting .268, the 26-year-6ld lefty has collected 36 hits in 96 at-bats for a lusty .375 tnark. Over-all he's now hitting .289. Elsewhere in the National League Cincinnati stopped Philadelphia 5-2, Atlanta defeated New York 8-4 and Houston edged Chicago 4-3.

Davis' first-inning homer started 20-game winner Gay-lord Perry on the way to his fourth defeat. Jim Lefebvre's fourth-inning homer broke a tie, and Davis singled in the seventh before Ron Fairly homered. Don Sutton allowed the Giants only five hits, none between the second and eighth innings. Clements Hits Roberto Clemente doubled home two runs and scored another on Donn Clendenon's double as the Pirates erupted for four runs in the sixth inning of the nightcap. Bill Ma-zeroski added a homer in the ninth.

The Cardinals jumped in front in the first inning of the first game as Ted Savage tripled in one run and scored another. Savage got the triple when center fielder Matty Alou misjudged his line drive. Jim Maloney and Don Not-tebart combined for a five-hitter against Philadelphia. Cincinnati battered Larry Jackson for three runs in the first inning and went on to their fifth straight victory. Vada Pinson homered for the Reds in the third.

-Homers by Ed Mathews and Rico Carty powered Atlanta past New York. Met errors by Ed Kranepool and Ken Boyer accounted for three more Braves' runs. John Bateman's single triggered a two-run, fourth-inning rally that sent Houston to its fifth straight triumph. Curtis Wasson of St. Louis didn't have the low elapsed time of the meet specially on this run but he did finish second in the super eliminations.

His Corvette stalled at the start, but his opponent was disqualified for jumping the light and Wasson pushed his vehicle the entire length of the quarter-mile strip. fTpts Net Meet BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) American Davis Cup aces Dennis Ralston and Clark Graebner and Australians Tony Roche and John Newcombe had some unfinished business to settle today before the championship wind-up of the 86th U.S. National Doubles Tournament. A berth in the final round against defending champions Roy Emerson and Fred Stolle of Australia was at stake as the Ralston-Graebner and Roche-Newcombe teams were directed to resume their postponed semifinal at noon on Longwood's center court.

Darkness Halts It Darkness forced officials to postpone completion of the match Sunday night with the second-seeded Americans and the third-seeded Aussies all even at two games apiece in the fifth and deciding set. Graebner and Ralston, taking the court while Emerson and Stolle were moving to victory, won the first set 6-3, but Roche and Newcombe fought back to win the next 6-3, 8-6. Then, on the brink of elimination, the Americans fought back to capture the fourth set 15-13. Emerson and Stolle, top-seeded in defense of their U.S. crown, swept past fourth-ranked Arthur Ashe of Los Angeles and Marty Riessen of Evanston, 111., 6-3, 7-9, 6-4, 6-2 and figured to have a physical edge over their opponents in the late afternoon final.

Won't Be Harmful However, Ralston and the others didn't think conclusion of the interrupted semifinal would be harmful. After completion of the men's semifinal, Maria Bueno of Brazil and Nancy Richey of Farmers Branch, will meet Billie Jean Moffitt King of Long Beach, and Rosemary Casals of San Francisco for the women's championship. Bennett Is Race Victor Shorty Bennett of Moline won the feature race in stock car competition Sunday night at Quad-City Raceway in East Moline. Heat races in the modified class were taken by Ray Guss, Jack Henson and Doug Crawford. Lyle McNall was the winner in the consolation event.

1 in the National Football League by upending San Francisco 24-17 in an exhibition game. The Falcons not only scored their first victory but slipped in ahead of the American League's Miami Dolphins and did just what everyone was saying they couldn't. When the two leagues stocked the expansion clubs, it was generally considered that the AFL had been more generous and that the Dolphins had received stronger talent than the Falcons did from the stocking plan in the NFL. Victories, however, speak Cedar Rapids Engages Fox Cities In Playoff "VV l9 Draw Praise First Win louder than words; the Dolphins are still winless and the Falcons aren't. Hecker, meanwhile, singled out two rookies for particular praise quarterback Randy Johnson of Texas and linebacker Tommy Nobis of Texas.

Johnson, getting his first long look at quarterback, completed 13 of 21 passes for 285 yards, engineered scoring drives of 77, 87, and 79 yards and clinched the victory over the 49ers with a 35-yard scoring strike to Alex Hawkins. "I thought Randy did a beautiful job," said Hecker. "I didn't send in but one or two plays all night. Nobis? What can you say about him? He played as well as ever and that's tremendous." While the Falcons broke their winless streak, the Dallas Cowboys won their fifth without a loss by downing Detroit 20-10, Green Bay throttled Pittsburgh 17-6, Los Angeles walloped St. Louis 32-14 and Phibdelphia edged New York 24-23.

In Amerian League action, preparatory to Friday's regular season opener between the Dolphins and Oakland at Miami, Kansas City finished unbeaten after a 31-20 victory over Houston, the New York Jets upended Buffalo 34-17, Oakland humbled Denver 52-21 and San Diego crushed Boston 31-13. Hcnton. who won his first title in 1961 and has defended it every year since, was forced into a best of three play-offs against Paxton, 68. Both men won five and lost one game during regulation play with Henton losing to Paxton and Paxton being beat by Art Hampton, Iowa City.

In the playoff, Henton won the first game 50-29 but Paxton took the second 50-41. In the final game, Henton threw ringers on 81 per ctnt of his shots to win 50-19. It was a disheartening defeat for Ppxton. Paxton, who won what was billed as a state tournament in 1939 at Cedar Rapids, has been trying ever since to win another. "I played nine games today and that's too many," Paxton said.

Cedar Rapids also was the overall winner for the season, finishing five and a half games ahead of Cities. Burlington was third. The Quad-City Angels were the only other team to be over .500 with a 63-61 mark, good for fourth place. The Angels lost twice at Quincy Saturday. get up and go! B'Hs Get Tag As AFL Favorite By MIKE RATHET AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) The site isn't set yet, and the date hasn't been fixed but when the National and American football leagues meet in a championship Super Bowl at the end of the year and AFL's standard-bearer will be the Buffalo Bills, coached by Joe Collier, formerly of Rock Island.

That, at least, is what it says here, now. The Bills, with a strong offensive line, a veteran defense and enough offense to cause more than an occasional ripple, should make it to the AFL throne room for an unprecedented third straight time. While the Bills seem to be the cream of the East, a three-way battle could develop in the Western Division with the San Diego Chargers right now getting the edge over the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs. However, a major shift in personnel the much-discussed trade that would send fullback Cookie Gilchrist from Denver to Oakland could shift the favorite's role. Here's the way the entire race looks from this viewing spot.
