Massachusetts Ready it To Recognize Texas By Associated Preis BOSTON Massachusetts is moving to corrpct a 108-year-old oversight. The Bay State is planning to recognize Texas as a state in the union. While other states ncknowl- edge Texas as a member of the union since Dec. 29, 1945, the General Court of Massachusetts (state legislature to non-Yankees) once resolved nol to acknowledge the admission of Texas and to use "her utmost exertions to defeat its accomplishment." That was In March, 1845, while the union was tearing in two over the slavery-abolition controversy. That was settled rather bloodily a few years later but a couple of weeks ago someone prowling through the Bay State's cluttered statutes had never been repealed.

Monday night, on the eve of the 108th anniversary of the Lone Star State's I 47 states, that Gov. Christian Hertef initiated action to make it unanimous. In a letter to Texas Gov. Allan Shivers, Herter tentatively admitted that the Bay State may have been wrong. "It now appears." he said, "that Texas is no longer an independent republic.

I am therefore moved to offer in the name of Massachusetts, full recognition to the state of Texas as an independent and integral part of the union." At last reports, the current General Court of Massachusetts was generously disposed toward Texans.
