TIMES-DEMOCRAT PAGE 4 Scoring Touchdowns In Comedy TP The idea for the program originated with Ernie Barnes and Mike Henry, both former NFL players. "There is a lot of talent among the NFL players," Barnes says, "and the idea of the show was to display ihat talent." That idea has mostly disappeared in what is now a fast-moving comedy with music show. It's easy to get football players to appear, because proceeds from the special go to the NFL Players Association. "It's an interesting show to do," Saul was saying. "It's also a herculean task." "Herculean, I love that word," Bernie says.

"We're all football nuts, so we love doing it," Saul says. "It was also the only way we could get tickets to the Redskin-Ram game," Bernie adds. You can tell nothing is taken too seriously on the set. Except that Turteltaub and Orenstein are always ready for last minute changes (someone suddenly can't show up and someone else has to be found as a replacement), or a line of dialogue needs changing, or someone is making a demand. They manage it all with efficiency and good nature, and that's part of what makes a pair of producers.

Early this year, Saul and Bernie will head back to Phoenix and Carefree for the start of filming of the second year of the Van Dyke show. "We'll be rooming together this year. We'll fly to Hollywood on weekends to see our families," they say. "But while we're in Arizona, we're going to be the Odd Couple." By Joan Crosby HOLLYWOOD Saul Turteltaub and Bernie Orenstein, one of whom is tall and good-looking and the other of whom is not so tall and good-looking, emerged from the cactus around Carefree, where they are generally occupied producing "The New Dick Van Dyke Show," and settled briefly on Cahuenga Boulevard where, single-handedly, they captured the cream of the National Football League. The occasion is the "Second Annual Super Comedy Bowl," set for Wednesday at 8 p.m.

on Ch. 4. This is the world's only tv show which has to be filmed on consecutive Mondays, because that's the only day the pros can fly into and out of Los Angeles. It's also the show which has no trouble rounding up big name stars, like George C. Scott, Paul Newman, Jack Lemmon, Burt Lancaster and Jack Klugman, because they're football fans.

Furthermore, it's the only show on which you will see George C. Scott receive an award (as the greatest football fan). To list the stars of show business and football who will be on the show would leave no room for a story or further mention of Turteltaub-Oren-stein, who agree producing the show is not an easy task. For instance, there's Greg Morris over there on the set, walking into camera range and singing one line from a song. But look at the monitor and you'll see Greg is part of an ensemble.

It's camera trickery and much of the show was done that way. fc Lis 1 r4 "It- A St it Producers of "The Second Annual Super Comedy Bowl" Bernie Orenstein (left) and Saul Turteltaub (right) check with guest starring football great Roman Gabriel on the special Wednesday at 8 p.m. on Ch. 4. Jill St.
