Several cases of sleeping sickness among horses have been reported here and a state veterinary is in Sleeping Sickness It seems the farmers are having to take a littleih bitter with the sweet this fall of plenty The sleep ing sickness has struck the horses and the swine plague has broke out among the hogs A fine brood mare of Alfred Pacheco was stricken Sunday A veterinary was called who gave the treatment recom mended by the state but to date there is no noticeable improvement Orchard Raided "The Targe apple orchard on the George Schmidt farm was raided one night last week and stripped of practically all fruit approxi mately 50 bushel of fine winter ap ples Mr Schmidt operates a gro cery store in Miami and Charles Nicks farms this land There is no house near the orchard it having burned down several months ago making everything sail ing for the thieves Bible School Our Bible school is showing an increase in attendance as the weather cools off 31 being present last Sunday (Special) Hyde successful Woods county farmer believes strictly in certified or tested seed wheat and to prove that he does he has been developing one of the best strains of what this section of the country has seen says George elkel Hyde started when he began heads from his him more than his wheat seed up to the standard which he desired when he started This new variety of wheat Eagle Chief was selected from only a few heads that had four grains to the mesh on coarse stiff straw That was in 1930 and he has been so careful in selecting the proper heads that every one not true to form has been discarded The handful of seeds he first se lected made only few more hand fuls but he continued his careful selection until he increased the value and selectivity of the heads and until he was satisfied he had obtained what he wanted Hyde has the distinction of be ing the 'only man in Oklahoma to produce a new variety of wheat and have it recognized by the State Department of Agriculture and the Extension Service of Oklahoma A and college He has put this wheat to numerous 'tests and has received advice and suggestions from some of the best wheat men in the entire wheat belt with the idea of improving the quality of the seed Hyde sowed those first heads on corn ground so there would be no mixture for three years or inferior stocks or heads In 1925 he had 140 bushels all had coarse ty pa straw Two bushels were sold to each grower selected by th county agent in 30 counties in Oklahoma and northern Texas Thirteen farmers then had a yield of more than 100 bushels and all of them reported a yield in excess of 25 bushels The wheat has been tried out at Oklahoma A college the state experiment farm in Garfield county the Goodwell station ort Hayes and at Lawton In every case: it
